Already for the twelfth time in the capital of Russia there will be a festival, which is celebrated all over the world - "Night of Museums". On the night from Saturday to Sunday (from May 19 to 20, 2018), all Moscow museums will receive visitors at a special time.
People will have the opportunity not only to look at interesting exhibits, as well as listen to a special program that each museum participating in the action prepares specifically for this festival. In 2018, more than two hundred museums in Moscow and various exhibition centers took part in the action.

1978 is the year of the birth of International Museum Day. Exactly forty years ago, on May 18, 1970, the first celebration and solemn festivities were held on the occasion of this day. Today, more than two hundred states celebrate International Museum Day, and the Russian Federation is one of them.
From the beginning of the celebration and hell until 1991, this holiday did not cause demand among the population. This day was considered solemn only by those who had anything to do with the museum, often they were employees. Over time, interest in the holiday has grown among historians, art historians, and archaeologists, who also have an indirect relationship to the existence of museums.
A year later, it was decided to set a special theme every year on this day and come up with a motto corresponding to it. This strategy was right, as a lot of people immediately became interested in the day of museums, and wanted to participate and join the celebration. As a result, the celebrations were held on a wider scale, which is why patrons, sponsors and authorities had to invest much more money in the event.
And in 1997, in Germany, before the International Museum Day, the authorities decided to make an opening in museums where festivities were held and it was possible to visit a cultural building at a time that was considered non-working on ordinary days. Two years later, a similar tradition was picked up by Germany's neighbor France. And in 2001, thirty-nine other countries around the world adopted such a new look at the celebration.
In 2008, ninety countries from all over the world celebrated International Museum Day. And the number of museums that made their debut in the event exceeded 20 thousand. In 2015, this World holiday was celebrated by more than 150 countries of the world.
To date, more than two hundred countries around the world will take part in the Museum Day event. AT Russian Federation it will be held under the motto "Masterpieces from the storerooms."

Days of free visits at the museum
Every Wednesday, admission to the permanent exhibition "The Art of the 20th Century" and temporary exhibitions in (Krymsky Val, 10) is free for visitors without a guided tour (except for the exhibition "Ilya Repin" and the project "Avant-garde in three dimensions: Goncharova and Malevich").
The right to free access to expositions in the main building in Lavrushinsky Lane, the Engineering Building, the New Tretyakov Gallery, the house-museum of V.M. Vasnetsov, museum-apartment of A.M. Vasnetsov is provided on the following days for certain categories of citizens:
First and second Sunday of every month:
for students of higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation, regardless of the form of education (including foreign citizens-students of Russian universities, graduate students, adjuncts, residents, assistant trainees) upon presentation of a student ID card (does not apply to persons presenting student trainee ID cards) );
for students of secondary and secondary specialized educational institutions (from 18 years old) (citizens of Russia and CIS countries). On the first and second Sundays of each month, students holding ISIC cards have the right to visit the exhibition “Art of the 20th Century” at the New Tretyakov Gallery free of charge.

The Museum Day holiday was established in 1977 at the initiative of the Russian delegation at a regular meeting of the International Council of Museums. Since 1978, it has been celebrated in more than 150 countries, including ours.
Especially popular is the Day of Museums in Moscow, where there are several hundred private and state museums and their branches. Among them are historical, natural science, literary, musical, art museums, museum-reserves and estates, exhibition halls, etc.
These institutions are preparing a great deal for the holiday. cultural program: lectures, master classes, historical reconstructions, theatrical shows, etc.
When and how will Moscow celebrate Museum Day 2019?
This international holiday is celebrated annually on May 18. Those who wish can also spend the Night of Museums in Moscow, which in 2019 falls on May 18-19.
Many interesting cultural events will be timed to coincide with this event in the capital. When in Moscow can I go to the museum for free?
In addition to the Day of Museums in Moscow, the capital's museums can be visited free of charge and at other times. According to the resolution adopted in 2012 by the Department of Culture of Moscow, such actions are held every third Sunday of the month.
You can visit the museums of the city for free on days new year holidays, on City Day (September 7-8), Russia Day (June 12), National Unity Day (November 4), and spend the Night at the Museum in Moscow.
According to statistics, the number of visitors during these periods is three times higher than usual. About 40,000 people visit the capital's museums every day during the action. Therefore, when planning a cultural program, be prepared for the fact that you will have to stand in line, and considerable ones.
Only museums that are subordinate to the Department of Culture of Moscow take part in the action, and in museums of federal significance (for example, Tretyakov Gallery, Museums of the Moscow Kremlin, etc.), it is not held.
However, on Museum Day in Moscow, many of these cultural institutions also open their doors to all visitors.
