The Museum of Moscow is a unique cultural object that keeps the history of the capital of the Russian state from the Stone Age to the present. The museum is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Moscow.

It was created in 1896 on the initiative of the City Duma as the Museum of the Moscow Municipal Economy, since 1920 it was called the Moscow Communal Museum. From 1940 to 1986 known to Muscovites as the Museum of the History and Reconstruction of Moscow, and since 1986 - as the Museum of the History of the City of Moscow. The main building of the Museum since 1934 was located in the Church of John the Evangelist under the Elm on New Square. And in 2006, the Government of Moscow gave the Museum a new building - the Provisional Stores complex - to create a universal museum complex of the 21st century, the Museum of Moscow.

The plans of the Museum and the City Government include a complete reconstruction of the unique architectural complex and adaptation of its buildings for museum purposes in accordance with the latest achievements of museum technologies. But, despite the fact that the necessary conditions for the storage of the Museum's funds have not yet been created, already today temporary exhibitions from the Museum's funds are exhibited in the Provision Stores complex, interdepartmental, interregional and international exhibition projects, concerts, performances, youth festivals, literary and musical salons and chamber music evenings are held.

Exhibitions

Now the collection occupies three buildings in buildings built in 1835 for the needs of the imperial army. Interestingly, it was transported for two years. The buildings are ancient, therefore, in parallel with the work of the museum, reconstruction work is underway here.

Lectures are paid separately. To visit one, you must pay the full cost - 200 rubles or preferential - 100 rubles.

Story

The Museum of Moscow recently celebrated its 120th anniversary. The year of its creation is 1896. For its long history it has moved and changed its name several times. Initially, the museum was founded for the exhibition of urban economy at the initiative of the local government.

The location was chosen in the Krestovsky water towers. AT Soviet years the entire fund was transferred to the Sukharev Tower, and then to the Church of St. John the Evangelist on New Square. Only in 2009 the museum found its current location.
