Picture Overgrown pond. Photo, artist Polenov, photography, quiet summer day, green park, lilies on the water, painting

Our country is rich in pristine corners of nature, places where a person’s foot rarely sets foot, such deserted corners of old parks, where you can always retire and dream, reflect, and maybe make a romantic date. Just such a deserted place was depicted in his work by Polenov, calling the picture Overgrown Pond.

Probably every person knows a quiet place that has become his favorite. A place that was once popular, but eventually falls into disrepair. It begins to overgrow with grass, overgrowth, creating a feeling of primordial nature. This is exactly what Vasily Polenov captured in the painting Overgrown Pond. The author painted the canvas in 1879, conveying to the viewer a sense of peace and his love for Russian nature. In general, Polenov wrote different pictures. These are paintings on historical themes, portraits and panoramas, but painting occupies a special place in his work. Polenov's painting The Overgrown Pond, on which we write ours, belongs to it.

Description of the picture

The first thing that attracts in the picture is a riot of greenery. It immediately seems that this canvas was painted using only one green, and only looking closely, we see other colors. The plot of the picture is simple and known to everyone. After all, we could observe similar pictures in parks on the banks of abandoned reservoirs. However, the author manages to portray nature in a special way, and I want to peer into every traced detail. For example, if you want to consider foreground every single blade of grass, every flower, sprouted on the shore. Next we see the water surface. This is an abandoned pond in which no one has bathed for a long time. Water lilies calmly float on it, and perhaps the frogs sing their song.

On the right we see a wooden bridge. And then the imagination draws some kind of fisherman who was sitting here and catching fish, or boys who frolicked and jumped from the bridge into the water. An old poplar grows near the bridge. It stands out most of all among other trees. Since the place is abandoned, we see how poplar shoots have grown. Further we see thickets of reeds and in the background an impenetrable park that has become like a dense forest.

Upon closer inspection, we notice that this deserted place is not so deserted anymore. After all, in the depths of the park with right side we see a girl. She hid in the shade of the trees, sitting on a bench. In her hands is a book, or maybe a personal diary. The girl is immersed in her thoughts, listening to the sounds of nature. This is a bird's hubbub, and the rustle of leaves, and the chirping of frogs. The girl retired to hide from problems, or maybe she just had a date with her beloved here? Everything can be. In any case, the abandoned pond in Polenov's painting is an excellent place for this.

The canvas struck with its lyricism and a feeling of sincere love for Russian nature, silence and tranquility. The painting "Overgrown Pond" was painted by the great Russian artist Vasily Polenov in 1879 and then was demonstrated at the seventeenth traveling exhibition, falling in love with all connoisseurs of true art.

Mysteriousness and tranquility are inherent in the pond, overgrown with delicate water lilies and green tentacles of algae. You look at the landscape and imagine how late in the evening, around midnight, mermaids sit on a wooden bridge, lowering their scaly tails into the darkness of the water, combing their long silky hair with slow smooth movements and patiently waiting for a lost passerby.

The other bank, although overgrown with tall grass and modest wildflowers, is illuminated by bright rays that have broken through the crowns of tall trees. There is an irresistible desire to take off your shoes and walk on the grass, feeling an inextricable connection with your native land.

In the depths, a bright female figure is visible. The girl sits on a bench, and in her solitude does not notice anything around, having gone into her memories of the past, or maybe she is already thinking about the future. What does it bring to her? Who knows? What will the quiet breeze whisper to her, quietly slipping between the trees, in this corner of the park by the pond overgrown with mud?

The place is really conducive to reflection: hidden calmness and only a barely audible splash of a fish that has gone into the depths, or a quiet call of birds are easily woven into a sensitive silence. Even a light breeze does not disturb this peace. There are no ripples on the water, neither a leaf nor a blade of grass stirs. Everything seemed to freeze.

Looking into the corner of a long-term shady park, you seem to be imbued with a sense of the harmony of life, admiring the beauty and grandeur of nature. A dreamy mood descends on the soul. This mood also corresponds to the figure of a woman in a light dress, which, like a ray, can be seen in the background of the picture. The age-old trees that seemed to surround her, as if offering her refuge from the gloomy thoughts of life. The lyrics of the picture are expressed in the unity of nature and female soul, their silent internal dialogue.

Polenov was engaged in the canvas even before he went to the Russian-Turkish war. Polenov spends the summer of 1877 in the village of Petrushki near Kiev, it was here that the sketch was created, which became the basis of this canvas. The sketch lay until the autumn of 1878, at that very moment Polenov moved from the Arbat to the then Moscow outskirts, to Khamovniki. A little later, Leo Tolstoy also settled here, having bought a manor nearby. Many who know about Tolstoy's ideas, which were so to Polenov's liking, call this coincidence prophetic. But they met much later.

From the depths of memory, lines from A.S. Pushkin's poems involuntarily arise. - "My sadness is bright."
I'm sad and easy; my sadness is light;
My sorrow is full of you
By you, by you alone... My despondency
Nothing hurts, nothing worries
And the heart burns again and loves - because
That it cannot love.
The researcher of Polenov's work, art critic Tamara Yurova wrote about this picture:

"The painting of the picture reveals the high skill of Polenov, the colorist. The picture is almost entirely built on the gradations of one green color. Subtly developed in shades of green, it is distinguished by its exceptional beauty and richness of nuances. It seems that there are no two absolutely identical tones in the landscape, just as there is no that somewhat neutral paint that completely covered individual pieces of canvas in the Moscow Courtyard.
The painting "Overgrown Pond" completed a certain stage of Polenov's work, marked the onset creative maturity. »

And the art critic Eleanor Paston wrote in her monograph about the work of Vasily Polenov:
"In another landscape by Polenov in 1879, Overgrown Pond, the artist's sublimely dreamy mood found expression in the image of the old park, solemn in its monumental majesty. This mood is emphasized by the motionless thoughtful figure of a woman, White dress which stands out alone in the dark depths of the trees. The mighty trees of the park, surrounding a fragile female figure like a tent, serve as a safe haven. The lyrics of the landscape motif are outlined more clearly due to the unity of the mood of the natural world and the world of the female soul, their a kind of dialogue. Escape from the hardships of reality into the world of nature - a theme that we see embodied in this landscape - would later be developed in the work of Polenov himself in the late 1880s and 1890s.

Reviews

I completely agree with the previous reviewer - you help to see the work of artists so deeply, so delightfully - perhaps, but it often happens with talented people- even the author on the subconscious wrote something that he did not fully understand himself ... You, with a sensitive and surprisingly creative look, and, which is also of particular importance - with a beautiful literary word, - expound the essence and depth, intentions and ideas of the author, recalling both the biography, and historical conditions, and even the mood of the artist...
As if in a living volume - images, stories and authors of works and their models stand before the viewer and reader, touching the mind and heart of the reader with their extraordinary destinies... looking at us from the canvases with radiant eyes and trying to tell something unknown...

Russian artist Vasily Polenov
overgrown pond

In the image of the old park, solemn in its monumental majesty, an elevated dreamy mood prevails. It is emphasized by the fragile, motionless, thoughtful figure of a woman, standing out alone against the background of dark trees, spread out in a mighty tent and, as it were, serving her as a safe haven. The lyrics of the landscape motif become more distinct due to the unified mood of the mysterious world of nature and the world of the female soul, their peculiar dialogue. One of the critics of Moskovskie Vedomosti wrote about the painting: Polenov has an excellent command of the art and technique of depicting nature, the ideal center for him is still a person, and his presence is felt everywhere. So in the painting Overgrown Pond it is not a pond at all ... This pond has its own history ... In this picture, the romantic again affected. It would be very difficult to determine with accuracy the category under which Mr. Polenov's painting should be placed... Polenov's painting is what the Germans call Stimmungsbild, such paintings are designed to give you, first of all, a mood and make up painting is about the same as an elegy in poetry. In the landscape, Polenov's desire for emotional and visual contrasts is noticeable. Bright green, with detailed daisies in the foreground, the sunny lawn is adjacent to the mysterious depth of the dark masses of trees. Through the trees covered with an airy haze, the blue of the sky with white clouds opens up, serving as a contrast to the dark trees of the park. Close to the style of landscapes early XIX centuries, the diversity of the landscape, its romantic mystery, the unexpectedness of combinations of its bright sunny and shaded parts were based on a built up subtle nuances system of plein air painting, developed by the artist in the sketch Pond in the park. Olyshanka (1876).

In 1872 Polenov's life, cool artist first degree in history painting and the candidate is right, it turned out very well. In the autumn of 1882, he began teaching at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, replacing Alexei Savrasov in the landscape and still life class, and taught this class until 1895. Unlike Savrasov, who appealed to the emotions of his students, Polenov paid attention primarily to the technique of painting. Gradually, he immersed his students in the secrets of color, which he himself mastered brilliantly ... "

Eleanor Paston about Vasily Polenov

The originality of the artist, his personality was largely due to the environment in which he was formed. Polenov was born in St. Petersburg on May 20 (June 1), 1844, into an old noble family that preserved the traditions of the Russian enlightened nobility, dating back to the second half of the 18th century. Polenov's father, Dmitry Vasilievich, a prominent official and diplomat, was a well-known historian, archaeologist and bibliographer. The canvas struck with its lyricism and a feeling of sincere love for Russian nature, silence and tranquility. The painting "Overgrown Pond" was painted by the great Russian artist Vasily Polenov in 1879 and at the same time was demonstrated at the seventeenth traveling exhibition, falling in love with all connoisseurs of true art.

When painting a picture, Polenov, with his inherent great talent, uses all sorts of shades of rich emerald green, depicting a mysterious corner of a century-old park. Dark green color in the shade of the park, it freely shimmers in the most delicate range, illuminated by the rays of the midday sun, the tops of the trees in the distance. Shades of green-emerald range are distinguished by their peculiar beauty and many incredible nuances. On the canvas of the artist you will not find two identical shades.

The paintings of Vasily Polenov fascinate with a philosophical outlook on life, love for the world and Russian nature. They teach us to appreciate the beauty of the world around us.

The lyrics of the picture are expressed in the unity of nature and the female soul, their silent inner dialogue.

From the depths of memory, lines from A.S. Pushkin's poems involuntarily arise. - "My sadness is bright."

The landscape is built on a highly emotional and visual impression. A brightly lit green lawn, with daisies, illuminated by a dim sun, is located next to the mystery of parkland.

Through the haze-covered trees, you can see the blueness of the high sky with the lambs of clouds, as a contrast to the centuries-old trees of the ancient park.

Now the canvas "Overgrown Pond" by a truly Russian artist Vasily Polenov is on display at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
