Biography

After leaving school, he worked as a mechanic in the local branch of Selkhoztehnika, then as a truck driver. He served in the army (in a construction company), on the fourth attempt he entered the Uzhgorod Musical College in 1980.

He graduated from college in 1983 in three years, having skipped the course as an external student, and in the same year he entered the vocal faculty of the Kyiv Conservatory, where he studied in the class of a professor, head of the department, People's Artist Ukraine K. D. Ognevoy. During his studies, he took part and won in more than 10 different competitions and festivals. Received a special permission from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to freely attend the educational process on the basis of treatment at the Uzhgorod Psychoneurological Dispensary. In 1985-1986, Stepan Giga was treated by the famous professor-psychiatrist N. Leontievsky.

As a second-year student at the Conservatory, S. Giga is a soloist of the Stozhary mega-giga-synthesis group, popular in some regions of the Chernihiv region, at the Chernihiv Philharmonic, and at the same time works as a soloist of the opera studio of the Kyiv Conservatory, which was led by People's Artist of the USSR Dmitry Gnatyuk. The latter opposed Gigi's work in the opera studio and initiated his expulsion from the opera studio "for lack of talent."

After graduating from the conservatory, he was assigned to work as a soloist National Opera, however, due to an exacerbation of a severe mental disorder, he returned to his native Transcarpathia - and in 1988 became a soloist of the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic. In 1989, S. Giga created the Beskyd jazz-rock group.

After the breakup of the group in 1991, for the first time he tries to arrange, write his own songs. He has not parted with this occupation so far. Subsequently, he created his own recording studio "GIGARecords". A few years ago, on the basis of the GIGARecords studio, he created Stepan Giga Art Agency where young performers study. This Art Agency is currently raising funds for the treatment of patients with schizophrenia and psychoorganic disorders in the Transcarpathian region. In 1993, Stepan Giga held the first action "Musical stop schizophrenia!", in which he spoke about his own experience in dealing with the disease. Since 1997, this action has been held annually and is a special reason for the pride of S. Gigi.

In 1995, the singer's first solo album, My Friends, was released. Later two more: "Natalie Street" and "Roses for You". In 2002, sales of the album "Natalie Street" reached the million mark. And as a result, Stepan Giga was the first in independent Ukraine to receive golden disc. In 2002, Stepan Giga also received the Diploma of the Mukachevo Charitable Department "Red Microphone".

On February 20, 1998, he became an Honored Artist of Ukraine, and four years later, on December 28, 2002, he received the title of People's Artist of Ukraine.

In 2005, Stepan Giga again ends up in a psychiatric hospital, but not as a patient, but as an honored guest. He takes "under patronage" the Mukachevo house of patients with schizophrenia and releases new album, based on their own experiences: "Voices are my voices."

In 2007, Stepan Giga was elected an honorary member of the Irshava Union of Knights Templar. During 2007-2010. S. Giga becomes a full cavalier of the Order of Berthold Schwartz.

In 2009, S. Giga was hospitalized after another concert in Bolshie Tyufyaki. The next two years were spent in the fight against alcoholism, but to no avail. This incident was the impetus for writing a new album by S. Giga - "Inside". This album is dedicated to the singer's topical issues of immersing a seriously ill person to the bottom of society.
