We are looking for a dance coach. Ballroom dance coach

After doing sport ballroom dancing for 10 years and leaving it, having made a bet on my studies, I always wanted to return. After finishing the third year of the university, I received a call from the trainer's acquaintances, from whom I myself was still studying, and they offered me to work as a trainer-teacher in the newly opened Children's Sports Youth School.

I did my first lesson as a coach not alone, but with my teacher. He showed me what to give, how, gave me a basic set of melodies, and then I already began my independent work as a coach-teacher in sports ballroom dancing.

If we talk about what coaching includes, then everything is simple, a mandatory attribute is a warm-up, which requires warming up all muscle groups, then there is a repetition of the basics of any dance from the dance program and the study of new compositions. There are only 10 dances: five dances of the Latin American program - that is, fast ones, such as - samba, rumba, cha-cha-cha, jive and paso doble, and five dances of the European program - slow waltz, Viennese waltz, quickstep, tango and slow foxtrot . All these dances are studied in turn, based on the age of the student and his gradual training, level of dance and knowledge.

Being a coach in this kind of sport is quite a difficult task, especially from the point of view of psychology. Yes, you can be an excellent expert in ballroom dancing, but it is very important to be able to correctly explain the dance to the child, and not just show how and what is done, especially when it comes to muscle work. After all, a ten-year-old boy, at the word we work with our hips, becomes not very dexterous. Highly important points the work of the partner and the partner, which must be explained in such a way that their contact causes minimal inconvenience.

In fact, all these are trifles, if you like working with children, it was much scarier and more difficult for me to explain to them why they did not go to the final again, especially if the reason was not at all that they danced badly, but that that Petya's dad is a sponsor of these competitions.

Such dishonest moments when judges were paid, or, now you can not just put money in your pocket, but, for example, take individual lesson from the coach who will judge at the next competition. Such activities are worth good money Yes, the coach is doing his job, but the child, even if he shows a bad result in the competition, will have the greatest chance of getting into first places than the one who danced a little better or the same way, but the coach does not know him.

A separate topic that surprised me the most was the coaches themselves, or rather their communication with each other. There is no respect, although there is, it is indicative, of course, you will not see anything, but a cesspool is going on inside: poaching children from each other, discussions behind their backs, intrigues ... This terribly darkens this profession! Instead of raising the level of dance and competing not in foul language and money, but in how a child dances, but no, it was unrealistic.

Finally, I would like to say that the work of a dance coach is not only work with children, but, in particular, with their parents! Now this is the number one problem, to explain to the mother of the child that he dances badly and therefore does not receive awards, because the coach is always to blame.

I had one such mother who could not even follow the dress code for training for a child, let alone comb her hair. Her daughter treated everything just as disregard as her mother. In one of the classes, I told the girl what can and cannot be done in class, once again drawing her attention to the fact that she is not ready outwardly (the only one of all) for training and sent her to change clothes.

In the evening, after a general lesson, I had individual classes, and so this mother flew in and made such a scandal that she brought me to tears in front of the children (and this is very difficult to do), leaving called on me, saying that her daughter’s legs would not be here and slammed the door . The children, watching all this, of course, were in shock, and I, quickly wiping my tears, set to work ... All subsequent classes, the girl came with her hair combed and properly dressed ...

Now I'm not doing teaching activities, yes, I miss the children who give a sea of emotions when you give yourself to them without a trace, but the last straw, for me, was a betrayal, a betrayal, as a coach with whom I constantly worked, and a couple that was the best in my group .

What are your duties as a coach?
– I am raising a new generation of Russian athletes. Year after year, starting from the very basics, I lead athletes to the highest level. We study choreography, master the technique of dance and bring performances to perfection.
I must say, we really succeed. For example, last weekend my students aged 14-15 became champions of Russia and will now be preparing for the World Championship.

What is ballroom dancing?
- Sports ballroom dancing is divided into two parts: Latin American and European. Latin American is samba, cha-cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, jive. European - slow waltz, tango, Viennese waltz and two foxtrots - fast and slow. I myself initially danced both programs, but then limited myself to only the European one.

– Do dancers have to choose one of two programs?
- Not necessary. At first, children learn both programs. Then, if desired, they can stop at one of them. Or dance all 10 dances - there is also such an option.

- Do you invent dances yourself?
- Not just dances, but entire programs. The dance has basic classical elements. The simplest thing is to rearrange them and assemble the dance, like a constructor.
With more experienced guys, we invent new elements, change figures. Often we borrow something from other directions or from modern choreography. For example, it is not uncommon for a Latin American program to use adapted elements from hip hop.

- How is your working day?
– I love sports, so my day usually starts with a run. Then I go to practice and dance by myself to keep fit. From three in the afternoon until ten in the evening, couples come to my classes, whom I train individually. We also periodically have group lessons where students listen to lectures, study theory and train in groups.

What theory do dancers need to study?
– Dancers do not just have to be able to perform various elements. They must know what degree of rotation is in this element, what degree of rotation. This information has to be learned.

How many pairs of dancers do you lead?
– In Moscow, I usually train 7–8 pairs different ages. In addition, I control several clubs in the regions and fly there from time to time.

- You judge dance competitions. What do you pay attention to first of all?
- First of all, musicality. They're already on their way specifications: balance, interaction, complexity of choreography, emotional fullness, etc.

Why did you decide to take up dancing?
- I myself don’t remember due to my age, but my mother told me how we passed by a dance competition and decided to stay and watch. The dances themselves did not impress me very much, but I liked the girls. So when my mom suggested I try it, I agreed. And slowly I was drawn in. At the age of 14, I won the Moscow Championship and made it to the finals of the Russian Championship. By the age of 17, I also won the Russian Championship.
And then I broke up with my dance partner, financial problems began. That's why I decided to become a coach.

How to become a dance coach?
- To do this, you need to pass an official exam. Only good dancers who have participated in tournaments and earned a certain class are allowed to take the exam. I applied, demonstrated my class, and then passed the exam in Latin American and European programs, talked about the elements, showed them.
After a person passes the exam for a coach, trains with couples for two years and takes them to a certain level, he can take the exam for a judge. So I did, and for my merits I was immediately awarded the first category.

– What are classes, and how do dancers earn them?
- This is a gradation of athletes' ratings. At the beginning comes class E - the lowest, then D, C, B, A, S and M - master of sports. People score points in competitions. The better the result, the more points are awarded for it, and the sooner the person moves to the next class.

- Does it happen that a good dancer turns out to be a bad coach?
- Undoubtedly. It happens that a person has a perfectly developed body, he dances amazingly, but he cannot convey his idea to the children. It turns out that children can only copy his movements, but nothing will remain in their heads. For some, this will be enough, but other children perceive information better by ear, and cannot learn if the coach does not explain anything to them.

At what age is it better for children to start dancing?
- Our children begin to study at the age of 4-5, but at this age it is done more to develop coordination and hearing. But at 6-7 years old, children can already perform simple combinations, they begin to dance a slow waltz, cha-cha-cha.
Previously, it was not uncommon for people to start dancing as teenagers of 13-14 years old, or even come as adults and achieve success and fame. Now the competition has become more, therefore, mostly people who have been dancing since childhood achieve titles.

– What dance school better to choose?
- On the early stages You can, in principle, go to any club. There the child will be taught to listen to music, they will show him the basic elements. And when it becomes clear that it is time to develop further, you can go to the top club in sports and ballroom dancing, whose students became winners of various championships. For example, I now work at the Latin Quarter dance club and collaborate with CSKA. And there, and there we have champions.

What competencies does a dance coach need?
- You need to be able to listen to children and their parents, as well as resolve conflicts, because there are two people in a couple, and even of opposite sexes, so quarrels are not uncommon. And, of course, you need to be prepared professionally.

- Where can a dance coach work?
– As a rule, coaches register as individual entrepreneurs and open their own clubs. The halls are being prepared so that dancers can train in them, because not any coating is suitable for them: at least a laminate is needed, and parquet is better. We have a Federation that registers these clubs.
Previously, trainers often worked at schools as a teacher of additional education. But now this practice is disappearing - directors are reluctant to let strangers in.

How much can a dancesport coach earn?
– The average cost of a lesson that lasts 45 minutes is 800 rubles. And then it all depends on the title of the coach, his workload and the number of students.

What career path can a coach have?
– His career path depends on the success of his wards. The peak of mastery is to bring up at least one champion of Russia. Then a queue of those wishing to study is lined up for them, and they can already select the most talented guys.

- It turns out that all coaches raise champions?
- No, there is such a direction as social dancing. It is now very popular in the US and Asia, but it is also developing here. Coaches teach people who do not count on sports results, but just come to have a good time, some basic elements.

- What difficulties can a dance coach face?
- The most difficult thing is to deal with children who do not want to dance, but their parents force them. At such moments, I cease to understand why I am doing this, everything starts to annoy me. Fortunately, now I have reached a level where couples who themselves aspire to this come to me to train.

– What can you advise to read or watch for high school students who want to become dance coaches?
- I recommend watching videos from the Russian championships, just to enjoy this beauty. All performances of the participants are on YouTube. And to learn more about the work of a coach, you can watch the recording from the congress "New generation" in which I participated. On it, the coaches alternately speak on various topics for 35-40 minutes.

The art of dance is akin to magic: you can admire a good dancer endlessly - he fascinates with the beauty and plasticity of movements, the ability to adapt to any rhythm. If you like to dance yourself and want to teach it to others, choose an interesting, modern and creative profession- dance instructor

In the days of the legendary discos of the 80s, dance clubs could not accommodate everyone who wanted to learn the latest innovations: lambada or breakdance. Since then, only the names of the dance styles have changed, and the rhythms have become faster. Young people are willing to work in groups sports dances- hip-hop, rock and roll, modern jazz, tap and hustle. Passionate flamenco and alluring belly dance (belly dance) are always popular among the fair sex.

And, of course, all ages are obedient to the classics of parquet - waltz, foxtrot, tango, rumba and cha-cha-cha. Even in fitness clubs, there is always a nice alternative to "iron" (weight machines) and treadmills: dance aerobics. At the same time, dancing modern styles make up the main content of the classes, and the word "aerobics" simply indicates their health-improving character.

The greater the choice of dances, the more willing to learn them. Accordingly, the demand for the services of teachers is also growing. How can one "officially" enter this profession? A completely reliable way is to complete specialized courses. On them you will be able to improve your dancing skills, and most importantly, to master the teaching methods.

Instructor, teacher, choreographer? On the way to perfection

Boris N., dance school "Tequila Dance":

— All dance instructors study at master classes for professionals. This is one of the most effective methods, it is useful for dancers and teachers of all levels. Such classes allow you to "plunge" into the style of another dancer and thereby expand your dance horizons. Fortunately, well-known dancers and choreographers regularly come to Moscow and St. Petersburg with master classes: Boris Zavaritsky, Joaquin Perez, Lil Phil - Mariah Carey's choreographer. So there is an opportunity to learn!

"Dance teacher" sounds old fashioned. But in the diplomas of graduates of sports universities and colleges, pedagogical qualifications are most often indicated: "teacher-choreographer, dance teacher." In order to be called so with full right, it is necessary, firstly, to go through a rigorous selection process upon admission, secondly, to study for at least three years, and thirdly, to pass state exams in several types of dance and defend a diploma.

This canonical path, for various reasons, is not suitable for everyone. With the development of the fitness industry, dance has turned from secular entertainment and elite art into a special kind of sport, as well as an element healthy lifestyle life. It is clear that there will not be enough teachers from the Moscow state academy choreography or the Academy of Russian Ballet. AND I. Vaganova (St. Petersburg).

Therefore, courses lasting from two to three months to six months are so popular. Of course, express training does not replace secondary vocational or higher education, but it provides the necessary skills. By the way, the shorter the course, the denser and richer the program, which is designed, among other things, for compulsory independent work using special textbooks and video materials.

In certificates issued at the end of most courses (subject to passing a qualifying exam), specialists in the field of graceful movements are called dance instructors, as well as instructors of group programs. Often, specialization is specified separately - modern jazz, belly dance, dance aerobics, step, etc.

At first glance, choreographers and dance instructors have a common task: to teach people how to move beautifully, to hear the rhythm, and to develop coordination of movements. But there is a significant difference between them, and it's not just that becoming an instructor is easier. The teacher-choreographer first of all perceives dance as an art, the instructor as a sport. Perhaps that is why dance instructors are often coaches working in sports clubs who want to expand their specialization. But this path is also chosen by amateur dancers who have begun to seriously engage in any kind of dance.

Everyone back to base!

Unlike universities and colleges of a choreographic orientation, everyone is accepted for dance instructor courses. However, the condition for successful training is not only good physical fitness and diligence, but also a choreographic base. That is, knowing the basics classical dance. It would seem, why would a future jazz-modern or dance aerobics teacher need "archaic" cor-de-bras, batmans, pliés and changan-de-pieds? However, the choreography gives the dance instructor the posture and correct positioning of the body, good plasticity and flexibility, perfection of movements and postures, and many other automatic skills necessary for different types dance. In addition, without a common base, it will be difficult for you to compete with colleagues in the profession. If you learned to dance in an amateur studio, but did not study choreography separately, then before enrolling in instructor courses, it makes sense to individually go through the basics of classical dance with a good teacher.

Three "crusts"

How to choose courses?

  • The less an organization talks about itself publicly, the better.
  • Be wary if you are guaranteed "everything at once": a state diploma, an internship, employment. Promises must be realistic: what specific skills you will acquire, what opportunities you will have to improve them, etc.
  • Be especially careful if you hear inappropriate comments about other schools, programs and teachers in the courses.
  • Remember that every company and every training program has its pros and cons. The arbiter is your own taste and further intentions.

Do you want to not only get a job "with a guarantee", but also become a well-known person in the dance world over time? Then you need to develop and confirm qualifications. There are many training programs for dance instructors, courses are opened at sports and dance associations (for example, the Hustle Federation) and in independent educational institutions (Wellness Academy, Fitness Academy, etc.). How not to make a mistake in choosing?

First of all, determine the direction or dance style that appeals to you the most. Decide for yourself whether you want to become an all-round instructor (in this case, it makes sense to visit castings that are regularly held by large sports clubs) or specialize in one thing - belly dance, latin, step, hustle. Then soberly assess your capabilities, initial training, time and financial resources. And finally, decide what document you expect to receive in the end.

In most cases, the courses issue a certificate confirming the right to conduct instructor activities in the chosen direction. Attention: this can be both a certificate of advanced training of the state standard, and an "author's" certificate of a certain club. The latter usually carries less weight in the eyes of the employer. But if the club is well known and has existed for many years, such a certificate can also be appreciated. Alas, any dance certificate is only valid for three years, and then it must be confirmed by re-passing the qualifying exam. A state-recognized diploma after courses is issued less often, but such a practice exists (for example, at the Educational Center "Knowledge"). Its advantageous difference from the certificate is that it does not become obsolete.

In the classroom: theory and practice

The solid status of the educational institution that opened courses for dance instructors is confirmed by the presence of eminent teachers in the staff. This guarantees professional training in teaching methods. In addition, the training program should include both practical and theoretical blocks. For the convenience of students, the full course is most often divided into steps lasting from 36 to 107-112 ac. hours. Each stage is dedicated to a specific dance style and his teaching methods.

Throughout the course, students take intermediate tests and do homework, as well as attend master classes and workshops. At master classes, most of the time is devoted to practicing practical skills. For example, famous teacher Irina Chernikina in collaboration with several educational institutions conducts regular refresher courses for professional instructors of dance programs "Bellydance PRO - belly dance, professional level". This program allows you to hone your teaching skills and expand the range of dance movements.

At the final exam, you need to show not only the learned exercises, but also pass an interview in all theoretical sections. For example, you may be asked what biochemical changes occur in the cells of the body under the influence of different types of physical activity (aerobic, anaerobic, etc.), as well as describe in detail the scheme for constructing a particular lesson.

Education is not cheap - the price for a one and a half to two month course can be from 7 to 19 thousand rubles. depending on the saturation of the program, and for the semi-annual - from 35 to 70 thousand rubles. and more.

Know and be able

Of course, the "crust" (diploma, certificate or certificate) is an important result of training, but you cannot rely on it alone. By the end of the program, the dance instructor must develop his own teaching methodology. It's the hardest kind graduate work. After all, your program should be available to any student, for it it is necessary to develop algorithms for the implementation of elements, to think over lesson plans. It is important to gain teaching experience. A lot of advantages in training are given by constant training at home, watching videos with performances famous dancers and attending workshops. As well as educational lessons that you can give to friends. And the last thing: in order to teach others to dance, it is important not only to move beautifully yourself, but also to have tact, sensitivity, intuition, and the ability to gain trust.
