Antique frame for a picture. Painting and decorative finishing of a baguette for paintings

Painting a picture frame is a rather unusual, but interesting process. In this article, I will share some tricks and secrets. We will talk about finishing a self-made baguette or finishing an old one (read how to make a baguette for a frame with your own hands).

Decorative finishing of the baguette can be done by painting or by coating the profile with foil.

To color the baguette, you can use bronze or silver paint. If you process it not with ready-made paint, but with bronze powder, then you can do this: first paint the baguette with alkyd varnish or paint of the desired color, and then (while the layer is sticky) spray bronze powder. Particles of "bronze" will evenly settle on the baguette and "stick" to the sticky layer of varnish. This method will give the baguette a spectacular golden look. However, such a paint layer is short-lived. Even from a touch with your fingers, the “goldenness” fades. Therefore, it will be more reliable to additionally cover the dried layer of bronze paint with varnish. But in this case, the varnish will reduce the "golden effect".

In addition to applying bronze powder, the baguette can be painted directly with ready-made bronze paint. Such paint can be prepared independently from bronze powder. To do this, you can stir bronze powder either in alkyd varnish, or drying oil, or even in ordinary sunflower oil. If it is varnish, then it needs to be slightly diluted with a solvent. The thinner the varnish, the more “golden” the paint, but in this case its strength will be less.

In addition to the usual painting, you can make the effect of old bronze. To do this, the baguette is first painted in dark color: black-brown, brown-green, etc. The paint should be matte. Further, bronze paint is sprayed from a spray can, as if “sliding” over the surface. All "bumps" of the protruding elements of the relief ornament will be golden, and the recesses will be dark. As a result, we get the effect of an old, polished metal.

To imitate valuable wood species, the baguette is first primed or painted with white, matte paint. Then, the coloring pigment of the desired color is diluted in varnish (the paint should be translucent). As a rule, it is dark brown with some shade. Further, this paint is applied with a stiff bristle brush (you can even use an old and poorly washed one). Hard hair, as it were, "scratches" a dark, translucent layer of paint, through which the white base of the baguette will unevenly shine through. The way you hold and guide the brush will determine how the wood texture is patterned. In this way, a wide variety of patterns can be transferred.

When covering a baguette with foil, it is first treated with glue or varnish. While the varnish is sticky, the foil is applied to the baguette, squeezed with a sponge so that it repeats the surface relief and fits snugly against the baguette. After gluing the foil, the metal surface can be tinted with translucent paint. If the foil is not golden, but white (aluminum), then it can be given a warm shade of bronze by tinting it with a grated lead of colored pencils. The stylus is ground to a powder state, and then rubbed with a hard brush or rag.

In addition to the above methods for self-decorating a baguette, you can come up with a lot of others. By experimenting and improvising, each artist can come up with his own techniques and achieve interesting results in this creative process.

  1. We do not prime the frame with anything, or we apply one thin layer of primer, do not sand. This picture will be slightly aged, and I need a surface with the texture of raw wood so that the patinating composition is retained in it.
  2. We paint the frame in the desired color (1-2 layers). I chose the color from the very motive - it is milky white and in some places, although it is not visible, there are light yellow stripes (for non-uniform staining of the surface, see how to evenly apply primer, paint, varnish - here).
  3. We breed with water mixture brown paint and drops of black(the hue can be changed, more brown or more black or tan; you can make it more or less dark; the saturation will depend on the amount of water). And put this dark water on the frame wash immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth. If the surface of the tree is uneven, then you get this texture:

4. Cover with matte varnish in 2 layers.

We get a stylish picture, which I already showed in the previous master class:

Frame 2. Artificial scuffs plus aging with a dry brush.

Here I have chosen a nautical motif, there are “old marine things” on the chest of drawers, so the frame should match the motif. Our motif determines the style of the frame, so the decoupage of a picture always takes less time than the decor of the frame for this picture. So, here is the picture itself (there was no frame yet):

There were two options - scuffs on the candle or “wash”, but I chose scuffs on the wash, because on the motive we have scuffs more like “wash” rather than “candle”))))))

Let's try to repeat this aging on the frame.

  1. We paint the frame in brown (you can primer, you can not primer, okay). Not even brown, but such a brown-earth, as on the motive. Dry, can be varnished (I did not cover).
  2. We mix blue, as in the motive (we take into account that acrylic darkens slightly when dried), paint one layer on one side.

A few minutes later, when the paint dried, with a slightly damp cloth, we begin to wash in those places where there should be scuffs. If you erased more than you need, it's okay - you can re-tint. If you haven't watched the video on the casket with scuffs on the wash, watch it.

It turns out something like this:

  1. When all sides are ready take artistic bristles with white paint and dry brush technique we pass over the entire surface, whitening quite strongly her.

Working with a dry brush is as follows:

  • We take a small amount of paint on the brush;
  • We wipe almost all the paint on a napkin so that the brush is almost dry;
  • We pass over the surface - and we have paint residues clinging to surface irregularities or simply leaving intermittent stripes, as if dusting the surface. We always lead from the edge of the workpiece, leaving no clear brush marks.

Here, on the frame, I additionally poked with a brush, leaving white spots. It turned out very nice :)

  1. Two coats of varnish - and sea panel can be hung on the wall. Well, if the steering wheel hangs nearby, you can even without decoupage, or a rynda, and the walls are log, there is sand and algae on the floor, and instead of a bed there is an old wooden boat (I was dreaming about something) ...

Frame 3. Antique baguette for a still life with flowers.

  1. I took as a basis plastic frame with a beautiful baroque relief(and she was originally white!!! Horror!!!) Priming plastic 1 layer of spray varnish.
  2. Cover it with gold paint in a certain number of layers, depending on the hiding power of our paint, you can first cover with ocher, then fewer layers will be needed.
  3. After the gold dries, we take bituminous varnish(for perfume lovers) or any patinating agent, or even black-brown paint diluted with varnish. I don’t like odorous products, but I really like bituminous varnish, so I’ll show you based on it.

We put on gloves (otherwise you will walk with black nails for 3 days, and later make excuses that you did the decoupage of the frame for the picture), apply bituminous varnish to the entire surface with a sponge, especially in all recesses of the relief. Sponge - because it can then simply be thrown away.

4. Immediately wipe off all excess from the relief with a dry cloth, leaving the recesses patinated.

Such aging happened on a flat surface:

5. We carefully work out small elements:

And we erase here more carefully:

  1. Dry 24 hours according to the instructions (if it is bituminous varnish or bitumen). The rest dries faster.
  2. Let's cover this dark matter non-aqueous varnish(According to the instructions, bituminous varnish is coated with shellac, but, as always, I prefer aerosol).
  3. Additionally, you can walk golden wax on the protruding parts of the relief for more shine.
  4. Everything - you can hang it in a baroque interior (mdaa ... you need to change the furniture ... and wallpaper ... and at the same time paint the ceiling with frescoes ... oh!)

I have long wanted to write a post on how to age a frame. There are a lot of ways to do this, but today we will talk about vinegar and metal. In the future I will write about other ways to tint a tree that I found in an old book.

We take a regular frame, the material is pine.

From tools: a hammer, a nail to simulate a bark beetle, pliers, sandpaper, brush, Gedeo Ageing Patina, vinegar tincture on rusty metal. You can also use a brush for metal or a mini-drill with different nozzles, but I’ll write about this next time.

I made a tincture of apple cider vinegar and a bunch of rusty keys. You can take nails, screws, etc. But you first need to experiment with color, different metals and wood, on which the patina will be applied, give different shades. You also need to take into account the exposure time, if you do not finish it, then there will be a light shade, if you overdo it, it can turn rotten, and you will get dirt. I lasted for about a day.

The first stage - just apply the patina, as it dries, the wood will darken.

Then we make an imitation of a bark beetle and apply a patina in several layers to the desired shade.

I used the Gedeo Ageing Patina to blacken the veins and corners, then we process it with sandpaper and bring the frame to the desired look. Actually pGedeo Aging satin is very similar to bituminous varnish, I think you should not give 300-400 rubles (I don’t remember exactly how much I bought it for) for such cases, if you can replace it with bituminous varnish for 50 rubles.

Every happy moment or significant event in our life deserves to be captured in a photo. We store most of the photos as files on a computer or phone, but we want to see special moments as often as possible, and guests want to show off their own photo portrait or a well-captured happy moment. A well-chosen frame can advantageously emphasize the beauty of a photo, but mostly the same type of options are found on sale. In this case, a good solution would be to create a do-it-yourself photo frame that will make your pictures memorable due to its originality.

vintage frame

Vintage photo frames look very impressive, especially in combination with the classic interior of a house or room. This master class step by step photo will help transform an ordinary wooden frame into an old one.

We will need an ordinary raw wooden frame, it is desirable that the natural wood grain is clearly visible on the surface.

Next, you need to fire the frame with a gas burner. It is advisable to do this outdoors and away from children and flammable substances and materials for safety reasons. You can also fire over a gas burner at home, but this must be done with great care.

Firing is carried out until the entire surface of the frame blackens evenly.

Then carefully clean the top burnt fibers with a metal brush.

Movement should be directed along the wood fibers. To avoid scratches on the corners, you can use a softer synthetic brush.

We cover the frame with a white patina, wait for it to dry, and wipe the surface along the fibers with a damp cloth. In this way, the patina will remain in small depressions, which will emphasize the dark veins obtained after firing.

After that, the frame must be waxed and polished with a soft cloth. Instead of wax, you can simply cover it with one or more layers of acrylic varnish.

Frame "antique" is ready!

Gift for the main man in the family

Such a frame in the form of a car can be made not only by an adult, but also by any child. And besides the original design of the photograph, such a souvenir can become great gift dad's birthday or February 23rd.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • thick cardboard;
  • colored paper;
  • black paint;
  • pencil or felt-tip pen;
  • scissors;
  • family photo.

First, on a piece of paper, you need to draw the outlines of the car you like. If drawing is difficult, you can print an image from the Internet or copy a picture from a book or coloring book. Next, cut out the car along the contour and cut a hole in place of the windshield.

After that, you need to circle the template with a felt-tip pen and cut it out of cardboard along the contour, paint it over with black paint.

The next step is to cut out the contours of the machine according to the template from paper with a small rectangle at the top for attaching to cardboard.

Cut out two strips two centimeters wide and about ten to fifteen centimeters long. These will be the wheels - stands. They must be bent in the form of triangles, fastened with glue and painted black.

Add expressive details to the car.

We connect the top of the paper machine with a cardboard base, glue the stands on the back, place the photo in the windshield window and glue the lower parts of the machine with glue.

And this video presents the idea of \u200b\u200bdesigning a photo frame in Japanese technology"kanzashi":

An original decor for a photo frame can be an egg shell, as in these photos:

To create such a decor, you need to carefully break the shell from boiled eggs, removing the previously transparent film from the inside. Then I cover the base of the photo frame with glue and fill the surface with pieces of eggshell in random order. In the end, you need to fix all this beauty with a transparent varnish.

There are a lot of decor options, for example, a photo frame with twine trim is suitable for a marine-style interior.

An original gift for a child's birthday - a photo frame made of balloons.

For a gentle and romantic girl, you can arrange a frame like this flower arrangements from foamiran:

Soft and cozy frame

Here is such a wonderful frame you can make with your own hands from felt.

For her we need:

  • colored felt;
  • satin ribbon;
  • several buttons;
  • medium density transparent film;
  • scissors, pencil, ruler, glue gun.

From the felt we cut out three rectangles measuring 16 by 21 centimeters, as well as various decorative details.

On one rectangle, retreat 3.5 centimeters from the outer edge and cut out the window.

The film needs to be cut a little larger than the window and secured with a decorative stitch around the perimeter of the window.

Then we sew the two lower rectangles together, along the edge of the upper we lay a connecting line on one side, and then we sew all three rectangles on three sides to form a pocket.

On the long side, between the layers of felt, we insert the ends of the tape to fix them simultaneously with the connection of the parts of the frame.

We sew button wheels to the locomotive and glue the decorative elements together to the frame with a glue gun.

If you wish, you can try other fabric frame decor ideas, as, for example, in these photos:

You can also decorate photo frames with elements molded from polymer clay.

And this video shows how you can make a photo frame from a plastic bottle.

Patina is called natural process aging and oxidation, which appears on antique furniture and decor items in the form of plaque or cracks. Patina does not spoil the thing at all, but on the contrary, increases its value. It is an essential element of vintage style, it can also be found in baroque interiors and even in lofts.

However, waiting for your dresser or brass doorknob to age on its own can take a very long time, especially if your items do not have a rich past. But you want to admire the patina in the interior right now, which is why we have selected for you several master classes on how to create an almost real patina with your own hands! So, choose what you like best!

Imitation of patina with oxidizing paints

For this method, we need special oxidizing paints with a patina effect, a primer and some kind of base that you want to turn into a vintage item. It can be, for example, a photo frame or a ceiling rosette. The base itself can be wooden, plastic or metal - the material is not too important.

First you will need to cover the base with primer so that the paint lays better. After that, carefully paint over the entire surface with gold paint and, before it has had time to dry, apply an oxidizing agent with a thin brush. turquoise color. The oxidizing agent is applied in small strokes to those areas that you want to "age".

After a while, it will begin to show and create exactly the patina effect that we need. Finally, the frame should be varnished. For a visual sequence of actions, see

Imitation of patina with conventional paints

If the previous option seemed a little complicated to you, or if you just don’t want to bother looking for such paints, then it’s quite possible to use the usual ones, while using imagination and sleight of hand.

Purchase acrylic paints bronze and turquoise with a metallic effect, as well as brushes or a sponge and a regular water spray.

Using a brush or sponge (you can achieve a denser and more structured coating with a sponge), paint regular jars with bronze paint and let them dry thoroughly.

After that, mix patina paint with water and take your mind off by splashing it on the jars in any way you like. A modern element of decor with a touch of antiquity is ready! By the way, in this way you can decorate almost anything.

"Reaping" technique

If you want to patinate something on a larger scale, then do not be afraid - it's easier than it sounds. An ordinary dark brown table can easily be turned into an antique one, covered with an almost real patina.

To do this, you just need to mix paints of a suitable shade and arm yourself with crumpled paper or a towel.

Treat the entire surface and legs of the table in a "crumpled" style, let it dry thoroughly and - voila! - You are the owner of a real rarity. Well, almost real, shh.
