In the life of every person there are periods when everything around seems so boring, repetitive and monotonous that it seems that nothing can please. With regard to films, including animated ones, I personally have had such periods more than once. Saved only occasionally coming across things that could not leave indifferent.
"The Wolf Pack" has been reviewed twenty times (who cares, but for me this is an absolute record), and the fuse for viewing has not yet completely disappeared. This is a masterpiece, if I can put my attitude into two words. But if in more detail ...
When watching, I got the feeling that the creators were very much afraid that they would be accused of hack work. So much work has been put into each frame that it terrifies me. The film used Computer techologies, but, fortunately, very rarely and so neatly that many did not notice them at all. This is high class. I won’t talk about graphics, animation and music - of course, they are beautiful.
There are only two things that make me complain:
1. alternative history. Well, I can’t imagine with what such happiness the Germans would conquer Japan, rush atomic bombs, successfully replacing the Americans in this field. Maybe it's just that some kind of taboo is triggered in relation to the United States? Showing America as bad... politically incorrect?
2. Fuse explosion survivor. This is really a miracle, no armor would have saved him, and the surrounding "panzers".
However, The Wolf Pack is not about how bad it is to live under the yoke of a German boot. Yes, and die Fuse then, "there is an end to the fairy tale, and whoever listened" can not look further.
But the reviews for the film were surprising in some places. For example, the reproach about the "stupid", "zombified" Nanami Agawa is not at the right place. The uprisings arose not at all because of the evil uncles provocateurs, at first they were generally spontaneous, and only under the influence of a clearly unfriendly force did the governments find organization. Without that explosion, talk about the abolition of the "panzers" would have remained talk for a long time.
The parallel with Little Red Riding Hood is certainly beautiful. I especially like the way it's presented. First, the "Red Riding Hoods" and the mysterious "Wolf Pack" are mentioned. The viewer is already ready to hang labels on the characters. However, the quoted tale turns everything upside down: after all, the “girl in armor” is most likely Fuse. Then another somersault follows, stretched out in time (note that at first Fuse reads the book, then it is quoted by both Fuse and Kay, at the end the remarks belong to Kay alone). Only the final shot finally distributes the roles. to someone similar technique seems strange, but I think it incredibly enhances the image of Fuse, who in this story is both a predator and a prey. And it is obvious that running along the road of pins and along the road of needles is equally painful.
Main character generally very interesting. Personally, I don’t like characters who are only silent all the time, it seems that they don’t know how to speak at all. But not at this time. Now I want to say: “A tree is known by its fruits, and a person by deeds” - and feel the hero, not covered by verbal husks. "You're always so sad," Kay says. Like Tristan ("Tristan and Isolde" is the book in which Fuse keeps the gun). He is not a killing machine, as the authorities would like and as it sometimes seems to the viewer. Even if you remember the bloodiest scene in the film (the one where Fuse parades through the sewers, pouring bursts of fire at enemies), you can see that he never fired the first shot. His armor is not perfect, you can shoot in the thigh, you can stun with a grenade, and then cut down with the aforementioned penknife. But Hinmi noticed that a shot even with a rubber bullet, even through armor, hurts. Why does Fuse endure? Just for efficiency? The reason is that "one of the best students at the academy" never learned how to kill. He cannot decide which is better: to become an executioner or to die. But the screenwriter does not allow the latter. And there is a phased formation of the wolf - first he kills enemies, then former friend, then a girl.
I really like Kay. Among heroes reinforced concrete in her seriousness, she is like a ray of light in dark kingdom. And her smile ... oh-oh-oh! This smile is like a balm for the soul of a person who is tired of dirol grins from advertising. Why does she betray Fuse? Because the creature? Hinmi characterizes the girl briefly and harshly: “The same “little red riding hood” as the one that died. Codename Longhair. Real name is Kei Amamiya. She was arrested many times, but never convicted. A real venerable terrorist." Why then did she get caught? The answer comes from Kay. The girl was just tired of her role, so tired that she didn’t give a damn about her future fate. The question of money is not even raised: it is said that she perfectly understood what this affair would lead to from the very beginning. Why money to the dead? Only next to Fuse Kei is really alive. In a different company, the girl becomes doomedly quiet, invisible, like a ghost. If she is removed from the frame at this moment, absolutely nothing will change. Perhaps she really had something for Fusa, after all, a brave warrior, Superman, mysterious person, very famously pulled her out of the trap in the museum. I'm sure if Fuse agreed to run away, she would throw out a radio beacon. But it didn't happen.
Hinmi. The most controversial hero, although his "fabulous" role is quite definite. This is a hunter. Life credo - "Death to enemies." Moreover, it doesn’t matter at all which, at least “red caps”, at least “ gray wolves". If I thought about creating a SMERV brigade, Hinmi would become one of the key figures. Hinmi often lies, not so much to others as to himself. “We are not of the same blood,” he says about Fusa, considering himself “good”, of course. But it is clear that the hunter differs from the wolf only in his confidence in his superiority ... “Why didn’t you shoot then? What is the difference between us? Hinmi asks Fuse. Philosophical questions? Not at all. For Hinmi, this is just an attempt to pity a former friend. Translated from Russian into Russian, the phrase sounds like this: “Do not shoot, please, until I shoot first.” Hinmi also has to be betrayed, because a friend has become an "enemy", and personal affection is struggling with a life attitude. This struggle ended quickly and without visible moral torment, but does it mean that it did not exist at all? You can remember the scene in the shooting gallery. What does he say to Fuse? Sheer nonsense, which, it would seem, can be ignored. After all, his words, basically, can really be called a husk. However, translating them from Russian into Russian, we get: “They are setting you up. Dump that girl, and the sooner the better." This is his only opportunity to help a friend and at the same time continue to play the role of a zealous campaigner. However, Fuse, by then already aware of the conspiracy, does not believe either Hinmi or Kei.
I will not talk about teacher Fuse. He is so charismatic that it is impossible to throw mud at him. And no one will appreciate his commendable remarks, and there is little objectivity in such praise ...
The film is indeed tragic, and the world is gloomy, but it's not because Fuse's "Cerberus" killed Kay. If you think about it, he made a single mistake, which not everyone will consider a mistake, but if it were not for it, history would have developed quite differently, perhaps more optimistically.
Fuse didn't shoot the girl.
P.S. Why did I write all this? Yes, to express a simple, in general, thought. This thing is worth looking at more carefully: most of the questions that arise are answered in the film itself.

An old school spy detective with a fabulous theme. Not without blunders, quite predictable and the ending causes mixed reactions.

When a "hat" with streams (literally) of tears-snot rushes to the chest of the "wolf", the cinematic specificity is lost. Unnatural expression of emotions, cartoon. Plus, the feelings of the audience were spared. Otaku would not be forgiven for killing nyasha with the hands of the protagonist. Wouldn't buy DVD. And who needs it? And so all the sinister security forces spoil the youth. And the drama of the situation is exaggerated. In the shown world, such fun that it's just an ordinary episode. Service, damn it.

It is worth mentioning the intrigue separately: here everyone is not what they seem initially.
In "Werewolves" they did a great job on the psychologism of the situation, the creation of a painful and oppressive atmosphere, as well as on psychological portraits characters of this bloody epic. To be honest, for me it became a captivating element in recreating the general feeling of what I saw.
I was also attracted by the graphics themselves: the presence of clear, almost documentary shots, drawn in strict chronology, smoothly turning into a kind of unsteady, crumbly and poetic substance of a barely nascent feeling, a gloomy and foggy dream, a haze over the waters of the sewers, gradually dissolving a painfully familiar figure - everything it looks at least stylish and attractive.
The inspiring leitmotif of this creation by Okiura, whose screenwriter was Mamoru Oshii, was the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood", which received a free, ambiguous and slightly sadistic interpretation.
And I'll tell you, the alternative reality invented and embodied in this anime - like no other approached this fairy tale: cruel, bloody, deceitful, turning inside out, at every opportunity.
Anime - complex, confusing, until the end leaves the viewer in conflicting feelings. Although in last scene everything is explained quite eloquently, and one does not have to guess about the choice.

By the way, too long a political line is also not good for the anime, but these are trifles... and one more thing... the name...
