The theater season in Moscow is open! Yesterday, one of the last to announce the start of a new season was the Modern Theater under the direction of Yuri Grymov.
Our readers know that we treat this theatre, we do not miss a single premiere and admire how the theater has changed in less than two years.
We managed to attend a gathering of the theater troupe, talk with the Artistic Director and artists and learn about the theater's plans for the upcoming season.
We first came to the Modern Theater in November 2016 for an evening in memory of the great Vladimir Zeldin. At that time, the theater was directed by Svetlana Vragova and he looked depressing. I don’t know what played a role in our perception, whether the death of an actor that shocked us, or a gloomy and dark November in Moscow, but we were overwhelmed by gray walls and a very uncomfortable, cold building on Spartakovskaya Square.

And this is how he looks now. The central staircase, which was decorated with an old, dusty carpet, is now light and almost airy. The mood color is blue. Wonderful stained glass in perspective.
Now "Modern" is a respectable and very advanced theater. Coming here is a holiday. Last year, when we learned that Grymov introduced a mandatory dress code, we were dumbfounded. How so? So it's no longer possible to rush to the theater straight from work in jeans and sneakers, taking a backpack with photographic equipment? Do you need to go home to change and take a soap dish that fits in a small purse? By the way, "Modern" is the only theater where you can take photos during the performance!
Time has put everything in its place. Now we even like to go to the theater! Put on status clothes that we rarely get out of the closet, preen and change comfortable shoes for heels or stilettos. The theater is worthy of the fact that the audience did not come to a meeting with it in everyday clothes.
Yuri Grymov once again stressed that the audience in shorts and T-shirts with short sleeves would not be allowed into the theater. There is a jacket rental in the cloakroom. Don't want to bother with dressing up? Please, they will give you a jacket right at the theater)))
In the new season in "Modern" starts a competition for the most beautiful couple. If you come together and dress interestingly and fashionably, you can get an annual subscription to the theater! So, buy tickets, put on the most beautiful clothes and accessories and go to the competition!
Artistic director summed up the last season. Success is impressive! The theater managed to increase ticket sales by five times compared to 2017. This is a great result! Spectators love "Modern" and it becomes one of the most fashionable theaters in the capital. In my opinion, "Modern" is not just respectable, but in a sense even elitist. Only this elitism is available to all viewers who are ready to change as rapidly as the theater itself.
In the 2018/2019 season, Modern will host premieres that promise to be a real event in theater life Moscow. For example, in November there will be a performance of the play "It's okay that I'm Chekhov"?
The theater does not stop working on the landmark production of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. The work is progressing, we will see the performance soon. But here's what the theater management came up with. Tickets for the premiere, which will take place in June 2019 and is dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer, can be bought now and will cost much less than in six months. The proceeds will go towards the production. That is, each spectator can become a participant in the creation of the performance! This is called the buzzword crowdfunding. I was surprised to learn that the Modern theater has increased the number of seats in the auditorium from 220 to 353. Auditorium during construction, it was designed just for 353 spectator seats, but there are fewer of them left. Unnecessary chairs gathered dust in the theater vaults. Now the download is 100% and there are more viewers! This speaks volumes.
The theater is going to go on tour, on its stage there will be performances of the Pskov theater based on the plays of Ostrovsky and Chekhov. For example, famous actress Julia Peresild acted as the director of "Kashtanka".

FIVE YEARS OF THE THEATER
The artistic director noted that in January the theater will celebrate its fifth anniversary. The celebration will take place on January 13, under the old New Year- this evening, according to tradition, for the third time the theater award will be presented - GOLDEN MUKHIN, which is awarded to distinguished theater employees. " But this time, - Sergei Bezrukov emphasized, - in honor of the 5th anniversary, we decided to expand the list of awardees and present awards to friends of the theater from various fields.
FESTIVALS
The artistic director paid special attention to the topic of festivals held by the Moscow State Theater, emphasizing the importance of this direction for the development of the theater. So, last season the Provincial Theater became the organizer summer festival provincial theaters "Stanislavsky Factory". The festival was attended by theaters from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk and Nizhny Novgorod. Within the framework of the festival educational program for students theater universities from different regions of Russia, including master classes by Sergei Bezrukov, Nikolai Kolyada, Grigory Kozlov, as well as lectures by leading theater theorists and historians.

Anticipating the story about the tour plans for the season, Sergei Bezrukov recalled that the theater had just returned from the Big Tour.
At the beginning of September, as part of federal program « Big tour» theater visited Astrakhan, where the tour took place from September 5 to 13, and on September 14 and 15 the theater played performances in Elista.
