"What doctors are silent about"

If you enter this phrase into a search engine, it will return over a million results. And this is very sad, because it reflects the prevalence of conspiracy theories among our citizens. However, we are no exception here, they are common abroad.

Many thousands of people believe that in the world of medicine everything is done solely for the sake of profit, and scientists have not yet created a cure for cancer precisely because it is not profitable for them. Cancer treatments are profitable, but cures are not.

The cunning of doctors and medical scientists, according to conspiracy theorists, is manifested in the fact that they themselves, having fallen ill with cancer, are treated differently, but do not share secret knowledge with their patients.

The last statement is, of course, obvious nonsense, otherwise doctors and their loved ones would never die of cancer.

At the same time, it cannot be denied that not all potentially useful therapies receive an equal share of the attention of the pharmaceutical business. Business is business, and a lot really depends on whether it will be possible to patent this or that tool in the future in order to sell it profitably. In the case of vitamins, minerals, or some other substances that are widely distributed in nature, this is not possible.

And it would be easiest to say that the information preceded by conspiracy theories is deliberate nonsense, but, oddly enough, this is not always the case. It is important to be able to work with information and, most importantly, draw the right conclusions from it.

Both in Russia and abroad, the diet of the German biochemist Johanna Budwig, developed by her in the 50s of the last century, is very popular. Dr. Budwig died not so long ago, in 2003, so on the Internet you can find a lot of reviews about her and her methods from those who were personally acquainted with her.

They write that she cured 90% of the patients who turned to her, while none of them later had cancer recurrences. Such statements, of course, require documentary evidence, namely, references to medical studies conducted in accordance with all the rules of scientific methodology.

Unfortunately, Johanna Budwig did not publish such studies. Her ideas are mostly known through lectures, letters and interviews.

What is the Budwig method?

This is a diet for cancer, the main component of which is flaxseed oil combined with cottage cheese. In addition, Budwig suggested that cancer patients eat plenty of fiber: gluten-free fruits, vegetables and cereals, avoid sugar, animal fats, meat, mayonnaise, and especially margarine.

There are many studies demonstrating the benefits of vegetables and fruits for all human organs and systems and the harm of an excess of sugars and hydrogenated fats in the diet. However, the complete exclusion of meat can lead to a deficiency of the much-needed vitamin B12, an excess of fiber can lead to digestive disorders.

As for the main component of the Budwig diet - flaxseed oil - there is some scientific evidence to believe that it does have anti-cancer properties.

Flax - a cure for cancer?

It is clear that flaxseed oil or other biological supplements from flax cannot be recommended as a cure for cancer only on the basis of the listed scientific works. Therefore, it is not surprising that "doctors are silent."

Surprisingly different. Why, despite long-standing encouraging data, has there still not been large-scale testing of the effectiveness of carefully designed flax supplements?

Why is a review of the medical literature published this year, 20 years after the start of scientific research on the effectiveness of flaxseed supplements, not reaching a definite conclusion, but once again raising the question of the need for more thorough research?

Most likely, the answer is banal: there is no motivation in the form of material interest. It is profitable for a pharmaceutical company to create a new drug formula, but it is not at all interesting to invest in experiments with flaxseed oil or seed, which will not bring profits.

Universities and other research centers, apparently, simply do not have sufficient funding from the state.

As a result, there are still no answers to many questions. Will flax supplements really help the sick? What kind of cancer can they be effective for, hormone-dependent (like breast or prostate cancers) or any? Which is better to use, flaxseed oil or ground seed? What is the dosage of this supplement?

The American Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK websites have information about Johanna Budwig's diet and studies on the anti-cancer properties of flaxseed, but no specific advice is given.

Patients are warned that excessive doses of flaxseed without sufficient water can lead to blockage of the intestines, allergic reactions to it, diarrhea, and nausea are possible. There are some drugs that linseed oil makes it difficult to absorb, and this should also be borne in mind.

In general, the recommendations to the patient come down to the fact that it is necessary to consult with the attending physician, and then act under his guidance to the best of his own understanding. (This is not literally said, because this is an obvious contradiction, but the message is this).

What can the interested reader take from this? Should you try flaxseed oil and another flaxseed supplement? Probably with caution - but worth it.

Does it make sense to replace them, or any of the diets promoted as anti-cancer, conventional treatments for cancer? To date, the answer is still “no,” and here’s why.

The Story of Dr. Johnson

In January of this year, a group of scientists from the Yale School of Medicine (USA) led by radiologist Dr. Skyler Johnson published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The article is devoted to the study of which patients prefer alternative approaches to the treatment of oncological diseases and what results from this.

Dr. Johnson's personal history prompted this study. His wife was diagnosed with lymphoma, and he decided to check every bit of information available about the methods of its treatment.

Johnson was shocked. There were so many sites on the Internet offering alternative therapies that it was literally drowned in information. Or, more accurately, disinformation. But how to distinguish one from the other is more or less clear to a person with a medical education. What is it like for an ordinary patient?

But surprisingly, says Johnson, the study found that younger, wealthier, and more educated patients were more likely to turn to alternative medicine.

Apparently, such people are more inclined to distrust doctors and take fate into their own hands. Alas, they often overestimate their own ability to make the right decision.

The study participants were 280 people with treatable cancers: breast, prostate, lung and colorectal cancer). They chose one or another alternative therapy and did not resort to conventional methods (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and/or hormonal therapy). Another 560 study participants with the same diagnoses received conventional treatment.

The five-year survival rate in the first group was more than 2 times lower than in the second, and for certain diseases it was even lower: 5.8 times for breast cancer, 4.57 times for colorectal cancer.

Dry numbers are already quite eloquent, but there is a vivid example that we all remember. This is the famous Steve Jobs, who, in full accordance with the conclusions of the Johnson group, was smart, educated, rich and not at all an old man.

Jobs began to treat pancreatic cancer with alternative methods (among which, according to rumors, diets were included), and when he decided to turn to conventional therapies, it was unfortunately too late.

Dr. Johnson warns patients that if you are offered therapy with a conspiracy theory in front of it, if it is claimed to be miraculously effective, if it is given rave reviews from grateful healed patients, then there is a high probability that they are trying to sell you a pacifier.

But in medicine, as we have seen many times, there are very few unambiguous answers and advice. Internet resources dedicated to the diet of Johanna Budwig often do not sell anything, and the advice to add flaxseed oil to the diet, although not in the strict sense of the word, can be called scientifically sound, but you cannot call it charlatan either. At a minimum, it can encourage a person to look for scientific evidence for such a recommendation.

What should a modern person do when choosing treatment in the ocean of information?

It will be great if you can do two things:

  • find an attentive and well-educated doctor who reads medical literature in English;
  • learn English yourself and check information from popular sites in medical databases.

In the case of curable (treatable) cancer, it makes sense to follow established protocols, although additional measures such as diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and others can be discussed with the doctor.

Conventional medicine continues to push women to get mammograms every year as a way to protect themselves from the deadly breast cancer epidemic. However, mammograms do nothing to prevent the disease or improve survival rates. But surprisingly, flaxseed can reduce mortality from this type of cancer.

Dozens of studies show anti-cancer properties Flaxseed. Researchers at the University of Toronto recently reviewed the literature answering questions about compounds found in flaxseed and how effective they are in reducing risk breast cancer and inhibition of tumor growth, as well as whether flaxseed is able to positively interact with existing drugs.

Most animal studies show that a diet with 2.5%-10% flaxseed, or an equivalent amount of lignans or flaxseed oil, reduces tumor growth. breast cancer.

Flaxseed and the lignans in it protect women from breast cancer in a variety of ways. Here are just a few:
1. They reduce the proliferation of tumor cells. When a person has eaten, the lignans in their intestines are converted by bacteria into 2 estrogen-like compounds. It is these compounds that have been shown in animal studies to help prevent breast cancer by stopping tumor growth.
2. Lignans block the blood supply to the tumor. The tumor needs angiogenesis - the formation of new blood vessels for the supply of oxygen and nutrients. Lignans inhibit (reduce the production of) growth factor required to stimulate angiogenesis according to animal studies.
3. Lignans reduce the production of estrogen. Lignans block aromatase, an enzyme involved in the production of estrogen. High estrogen levels are often associated with the development of breast cancer.
4. Lignans block estrogen receptors. Phytoestrogens, like lignans, are considered hundreds of times weaker than human estrogens. But these plant estrogens block estrogen receptors and prevent the activity of estrogens that stimulate cancer cells to grow. In this case, their effect is similar to the anti-cancer drug Tamoxifen.
5. Lignans help produce more protective estrogens. Estrogen is broken down in the liver into three different metabolites. These two metabolites have been linked to the growth of breast cancer cells. But the third type - 2nd estrone - does not stimulate cancer growth and is considered protective. Lignans influence how the liver breaks down estrogen and increases the production of protective estrone, and produces other metabolites responsible for cancer in smaller amounts.
6. Lignans reduce the risk of metastasis. They can significantly reduce the incidence of metastases. In one animal study, a diet high in flaxseed reduced the rate of metastasis by 82% compared to a control group.

Previous meta-studies have shown that flaxseed can:
1. Reduce the risk of developing primary breast cancer by 18%
2. Improve the mental health of breast cancer patients by 76%

Many studies show just 25 grams of flaxseed per day (2.5 tablespoons) is an effective amount. . Studies also show that up to 40 grams per day is safe for postmenopausal women.

Incorporating flaxseed into your diet is very easy. Choose golden or brown seed, but make sure it is organic to avoid GMO varieties. Grind the seeds in a coffee grinder. We need to consume a little omega-6 and a lot of omega-3 fatty acids in order to create an anti-inflammatory environment that inhibits the development of cancer. In addition, omega-3s suppress the growth of tumors and the appearance of metastases.

Flaxseed, in addition to omega-3, contains a large amount of phytoestrogens. These substances modulate the levels of certain sex hormones involved in the development of cancer - estrogens. They regulate the activity of estrogens present in the blood and prevent the harmful effects of excess estrogen on health. There are a lot of phytoestrogens in flax seeds, even more than in the well-known soy. Among these phytoestrogens are lignans. Lignans play an important role in the prevention of hormone-dependent tumors, as they prevent the connection of estrogens with the cells of the mammary gland and testicles.

Lignans are also antioxidants and anti-angiogenic agents.

Daily consumption of 30 g of flaxseed by patients with prostate cancer can inhibit tumor growth by 30-40%, reduce its size and reduce PSA levels.

Pre-menopausal women have extremely high estrogen levels (especially if the woman wears xeno-estrogen cosmetics, eats processed foods, and uses plastics containing bisphenol A, which is a powerful xeno-estrogen that raises blood levels of estrogen). When breast tumor cells are implanted in laboratory conditions, animals do not develop tumors if their diet is rich in lignans or flaxseed supplements. Meanwhile, supplements with soy isoflavones in high doses can stimulate the growth of breast tumors. Lignans, being also phytoestrogens, reduce tumor growth. If women with breast cancer are not recommended to consume soy, then flaxseed is very indicated for them.

Flaxseed also reduces the risk of ovarian cancer and increases the survival rate of women who have had this disease. After feeding chickens with epithelial ovarian cancer with a diet containing 10% flax seeds, only 47% of them developed metastases; of those chickens not given flaxseed, 61% showed metastases. After twelve months, 72% of the diseased chickens fed flaxseed survived, while only 51% of the control group survived. Although the flaxseed-fed chickens had less aggressive tumors, they lost more weight than the control group; therefore, obesity is an important factor in the occurrence of ovarian cancer.

Women who regularly include flaxseed in their diet have a 42% lower risk of breast cancer after menopause and a 40% lower risk of dying from any disease. Flaxseed oil contains less lignans than seeds and less fiber, so it is less beneficial in fighting cancer. It is indicated for people with digestive problems and diarrhea.

IMPORTANT! If a person has constipation, then he is recommended to consume flax seed: it regulates intestinal transit in the most effective way. Immediately after taking flaxseed, there is a desire to go to the toilet.

Consumption. It is advisable to eat two teaspoons of flaxseed per day (it is not recommended to eat more than 25 g daily due to the accumulation of cadmium). You can sprinkle seeds on salad, add to creams or soups, vegetable juices, vegetable milk, etc. But we must take precautions: grind them. Omega-3 fatty acids and lignans from ground seeds are better absorbed and more active. Recipe 1 - Flaxseed oil and cottage cheese against cancer

To prepare a remedy for this recipe, you must perform the following steps:

  • Take fat-free cottage cheese in the amount of 6 tablespoons,
  • Stir curd with 45 ml. linseed oil,
  • Mixing is recommended using a blender or mixer,
  • In the finished mixture, add 30 grams of fresh flax seeds and 1 teaspoon of honey,
  • The finished product should be taken immediately after its preparation. For a more pleasant taste, you can add seasonal fruits, as well as walnuts, to the mixture. Also used in this recipe linseed oil and prostate cancer. It is believed that cottage cheese oil can cure the most severe forms of the disease.

Recipe 2

In this version of the recipe, not flaxseed oil is used, but seeds. To prepare a remedy, you must perform the following steps:

  • Take 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and put in a bowl,
  • Pour two cups of boiling water over the seed,
  • Put the product to infuse in a dark warm place for 10 hours.

The finished product is consumed twice a day for half a cup before meals. It is also popular to use flaxseed for breast cancer. Traditional healers recommend using the seeds by adding them in crushed form to cooked dishes. The initial dosage is 25 seeds. Over time, the amount of seeds consumed can be increased.
