"Russian Romance" at the festival "Golden Mask in Latvia"

In October, Riga, Liepaja and Ventspils will see the best Russian performance of the 2015-2016 season - "Russian Romance" of the Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theatre. On the last ceremony Russian National theater award"Russian Romance" turned out to be a real triumph - it was awarded the "Golden Mask" in three categories at once: "Drama / performance of a large form"; "Female role" (Evgenia Simonova) and "The work of a playwright" (Marius Ivashkevicius).

The decision of the jury hardly came as a surprise to anyone. Immediately after the premiere, "Russian Romance" gained a reputation as a significant production, with outstanding acting achievements (by the way, in addition to Evgenia Simonova, Tatyana Orlova, who played two supporting roles in the play at once) and excellent set design (designed by the legendary theater designer Sergei Barkhin). But most of all, the audience and critics were struck by the fact that the performance dedicated to Leo Tolstoy was created at the Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theater by two Lithuanians: director Mindaugas Karbauskis and playwright Marius Ivashkyavichyus. And that the great Russian writer was not on the list of actors. “Initially, Leo Tolstoy also existed as a character in our country,” Ivashkevicius later admitted, “At one time I was struck by their Sophia story: this is Romeo and Juliet, 82 and 67 years old, respectively. Such Shakespearean passions between people of a very advanced age ... But soon Sophia occupied the entire space of the play, preventing Lev Nikolaevich from appearing.

But next to Sofya Andreevna, Anna Karenina and Kitty Shcherbatskaya, Vronsky and Levin appeared on the stage. The wife of a genius is trying to figure out whose story is primary - the heroines invented by her husband or her own, but Tolstoy's work and his life are so intertwined that reality can no longer be distinguished from fiction, and this brings Sofya Andreevna to the brink of insanity ... "Our performance is very multifaceted . For some, this form, where living people coexist and literary characters, may seem complicated, someone simply does not accept it. But this notion of Ivashkevičius is ingenious,” believes People's Artist Russia, Evgenia Simonova, who plays Sofya Andreevna with a figure somewhat equal to Tolstoy.

"Russian Romance" is a kind of family saga, a variation on the theme of the novel "Anna Karenina", in which Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy acts not only as the author of his masterpiece, but also as the author of his own family drama. There are novels based on the author's life. But there are those who build the life of the author in the future. Or they break it. And then, in this fusion of the real and the artistic, the author becomes the most tragic figure of his creations." With this quote from Marius Ivaskevicius, the most famous playwright in Lithuania, who first wrote a play in Russian and received the Golden Mask for it, Moskovsky academic theater named after Mayakovsky presents "Russian novel" on its page. Viewers of all three cities where the Golden Mask in Latvia festival takes place will be able to watch the Russian Romance: on October 10 - in Riga, on the stage of the Dailes Theater, on October 12 - in theater house Ventspils Jūras Vārti, and on October 14 at the Liepaja Theatre. based on the novel by F. M. Dostoevsky "The Idiot"

Theater "Ballet Moscow", Moscow

Award "Golden Mask" 2016 - "Modern dance / performance"

Nominations: "Modern dance / choreographer-choreographer's work" (Alexander Pepelyaev), "Artist's work in musical theater"," The work of a costume designer in a musical theater "(Sergey Illarionov)

Music: Nick Burch and hits of the last century
Production: Alexander Pepelyaev
Artist: Sergey Illarionov
Lighting designer: Andrey Rebrov

From the theater

What is Cafe Idiot? This is a certain place to which the viewer comes, perhaps without even thinking about any novel, where various things begin to happen to him in a mystical, Dostoevsky way. He is fascinated by the movement of thought, emotion or body of the actor, peers at the screen, follows the movement of the characters. He struggles to distinguish the numerous Rogozhins from the Myshkins, and Nastasya Filippovna from Aglaya.

It is a path of fall and a search for balance, created by the methods of visual theater, which both the spectator and the actors go through together. This work is about how you can visualize those states that are embedded in the legendary novel and awaken in us when we read it.

Heroes will remain, but there will be several of them. Each actor will try on himself a certain duality, reincarnating first as an epileptic prince, then as a troublemaker merchant, and then completely switching to the side of the observer. Asking the questions "Am I Christ or the Antichrist?", "Idiot or a saint?", "Can I try on these roles or stay aside?" novel.

Using the potential and flexibility of the dancers of the modern troupe of the Ballet Moscow theater, as well as the methods of the theater of modern dance, Alexander builds his work so that the viewer can not only get aesthetic pleasure from the beauty and graphics of bodies, but also experience the micro-catharsis of recognition together with the dancers myself.

“We don’t want and can’t tell Dostoevsky’s novel The Idiot in a performance, this is a meaningless exercise. In the theater, we still can’t explain anything. We can play a plot, and it will be clear that such and such characters did something. But the most important thing happens not in the text.

Therefore, "Cafe Idiot" is not a retelling or interpretation of Dostoevsky. These are some thoughts about thoughts. An attempt to reflect on the atmosphere of the novel and the feelings that take possession of the characters. But you will not recognize the content of the novel from our performance.

What is the play about? I can say that it is about how a person tortures himself, cuts off his own happiness. But these are all empty phrases. I want these feelings to arise in the viewer on their own. For the audience to leave with a tangle of unresolved thoughts and emotions. With a kind of after effect, as if you were looking at a bright screen for a long time, closed your eyes, and white spots continued to loom in the eye sockets.
Alexander Pepelyaev

Quote

Alexander Pepelyaev, of course, does not retell the novel: a series of rhythmically and emotionally contrasting scenes allows only one to guess familiar episodes. The director includes quotations from Dostoevsky three times in the performance: read in a naive childish voice without a trace of pathos and anguish, they give the dancing episodes an eerie, merciless transparency. Like the novel, the performance teeters on the edge of cruel melodrama, psychological thriller, crime chronicle, carnival madness and fair booth. Here is a knife shrouded in a greenish glow, slowly crawling through the air to stick into the chest of the victim; here and running along the walls - in the literal sense - Rogozhins; and the Myshkins, appearing like ghosts straight out of the green wallpaper; and the relaxed-whacked-out high of the infernal disco; and the atmosphere of an inexpensive brothel with the satirically pointed eroticism of a fashion show in high heels.

But the strongest thing in this guignole, of course, is the dance itself - emotionally generous, technically quite complex, lexically developed, since the mix of hard music by Nick Burch and nostalgic Western hits of the last century allows you to experiment in different styles and genres. The choreographer finds the necessary movement words for each character in each specific case. (newspaper "Kommersant")

Golden Mask Award 2016 - "Drama / performance of a large form"
Nominations: "Director's work" (Ivan Popovsky), "Female role" (Irina Gorbacheva)

From the theater

Helena is in love with Demetrius, Demetrius is in love with Hermia, and Hermia is in love with Lysander. However, it's mutual. There is also Hermia's father, who mixes all the cards, trying to pass off his daughter as the unloved Demetrius. And Duke Theseus seems to even indulge him in this. At night, young people run away from Athenian law and parental advice - to the ducal forest, where they will be completely entangled (and unraveled!) by the spell of the elf king Oberon and his absent-minded assistant Robin.

Everything here is a game - theatrical, love, sometimes a little naive, sometimes complex and confusing. It can be sharp, even dangerous - it is better to watch such a game from the side, without interfering. Sometimes it’s childishly simple - you get involved in this voluntarily or involuntarily. But all of it in this performance is incredibly vital, incredibly reckless. In the chaos of the game, in the darkness of the night, the line between sleep and reality is erased. The boundaries of the world, vast, incomprehensible, are found and moved apart by touch. Where the "moss bed" beckons with its freshness, like cool sheets. Where lovers confuse each other, weave into a living ball, breathing jealousy, youth, fear and - love. It is like music, like magic juice, here the very air is saturated, it and only it moves "both the sea and Homer" ...

From Shakespearean

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Ivan Popovsky is accepted by the public with delight and jubilation. I terribly love to look into the eyes of the actors on the bows. They glow with such relief, happiness, such confidence in the irresistibility of their art. If you want to see happy people, do not leave bows. But the main miracle is that you feel how the spirit of that magical game that Pyotr Fomenko carried in himself is being revived.

From an interview with the Chairman of the Shakespeare Commission of the Scientific Council on the History of World Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a member of the Executive Committee of the International Shakespeare Association, Head of the Department of History of the Foreign Theater of the RATI (GITIS), Professor Alexei Bartoshevich
magazine "Screen and Scene"

Quote

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" was dreamed by the public at a time when, it would seem, nothing is conducive to a joyful theatrical game - and produced the effect of an oxygen pillow for those who are suffocating. For the theater itself, which survived the death of its leader, in order to find ground under its feet, the performance became a return to normal, but on a new round of development. Ivan Popovsky "sewn" the performance as if according to an old pattern, forcing us to remember about psychological lace, and about easy breathing, and about victorious acting, but on a defile theater premieres his work is simply amazing.

Ivan Popovsky inherits not only his teacher Peter Fomenko. In the circus rampage of his "Dream" one can not help but recognize the signs of the famous performance of Peter Brook, who demanded complete emancipation from the actors in rehearsals, which was then curbed with the help of circus tricks. Theater of Nations, Moscow

Performance -- participant of the program "Russian Case" 2017

Director: Timofey Kulyabin

Artist: Oleg Golovko

Lighting designer: Denis Solntsev

Cast: Yevgeny Mironov, Chulpan Khamatova, Elizaveta Boyarskaya, Igor Gordin, Viktor Verzhbitsky, Alexander Novin, Dmitry Serdyuk and others.

From the theater

"Theatre-goers say that they have never seen such fermentation in the theatre, such general applause-shooing, and never at any other time.
they have never heard so many disputes as they have seen and heard in my play."
From Chekhov's letter to his brother, November 20, 1887.

The first play by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was written by him on the order of the entrepreneur Fyodor Korsh - on November 19, 1887, its premiere took place in the first private theater in Russia, in the same historic building where the Theater of Nations is located today.

10 years ago, Yevgeny Mironov was appointed artistic director of the Theater of Nations. Yevgeny Mironov decided to celebrate this date by participating in new production plays by A.P. Chekhov "Ivanov".

"This is not a story about estates with pavilions. It's about Ivanov from a neighboring entrance. That is, we set ourselves the same task as Chekhov: to tell a story from today's reality - and bring an average person onto the stage. As if now a certain playwright wrote about an average official who is depressed and who could not cope with the circumstances. Well, he fell out of love with his wife - and she is still mortally ill. He has done debts, but there is nothing to pay. Well, a mistress appeared. But he did not cope - burned out. And then it doesn’t matter anymore, heart stopped or shot.

I must say, Yevgeny Mironov from the very beginning asked himself the question: how to play this apathy, lack of desire to live and fatigue? How to: walk around the stage and get tired? This is not in his nature, he is not a heavy artist, but explosive, impulsive. In many ways, our work with him is based on the fact that we try to build on the circumstances and not to guess. And from the very beginning I tried to keep him from figuring out how to play Ivanov and how to build everything. There is no need to play either a sharpie or a confused person: he has both in him and the other - the author himself throws him into different sides. The role is very difficult - because of this double optics: a person is not just tormented by the question "Why do I live?". This is such a Möbius strip, walking along a closed trajectory. After all, the question is not so much about the meaning of life, the question is about something else: "Why can't I live without answering the question, why do I live? .."

Timofey Kulyabin

Quotes

The director seems to put before auditorium a mirror in which you and I are reflected together with the heroes of the play. But, look, what is the breadth of coverage and depth of care here - in other eras, other allusions. We seem to be descending the time ladder deeper and deeper. The first act is our days, in which Chekhov's characters are still tormented and rushing about. The country name day of Shurochka absorbed the Shukshin, sonorous and bright, comical variegation of "freaks". In the third, "office" act, absolutely Vampilian tragic intonations sound. And finally, the final preparations for the wedding against the backdrop of green cloth again lead us to Chekhov (but from the time of "Tatyana Repina"), and from there it is not far to Dostoevsky with his "tears". And it turns out that Chekhov the playwright is not only being tested today, but is also woven into the context of Russian drama, literature and theater. ("Petersburg theater magazine")

Each time has its own Ivanov. In the Theater of Nations, we were brilliantly shown a hero who is weak, sluggish, uninteresting, living, in general, by inertia. So new little man, which is not even a pity. And no premonition of change. And no hope for a life similar to "delicate, graceful flowers." The slave inside was decisively defeated. The only thing that remains in the bottom line - as in the days of Chekhov - a new beautiful theater. (Magazine "Theater")

Theatre. Vl. Mayakovsky, Moscow
Golden Mask Award 2017: "Drama / performance of a large form", "Female role" (Evgenia Simonova), "The work of a playwright" (Marius Ivaskevicius).

Nominations: "Director's Work" (Mindaugas Karbauskis), "Supporting Role" (Tatiana Orlova).

Directed by: Mindaugas Karbauskis
Artist: Sergey Barkhin
Costume designer: Maria Danilova
Lighting designer: Igor Kapustin
Cast: Evgeniya Simonova, Tatyana Orlova, Alexey Dyakin, Vera Panfilova, Sergey Udovik, Alexey Sergeev, Pavel Parkhomenko, Yulia Silaeva, Yulia Solomatina, Miriam Sekhon, Maya Polyanskaya, Maxim Glebov

From the theater

The play by Mindaugas Karbauskis is a subtle, metaphysical combination of the biography and work of Leo Tolstoy. Together with Marius Ivashkevicius, the author of the play, the director weaves several times and realities: the works and events of Tolstoy's personal life, in the center of which is his wife Sofya Andreevna. Their love, tormented by the genius of the writer, becomes a reflection of the feelings of his characters. Together with her sons and daughters, Sofya Andreevna is trying to win back from the Oblonskys and Karenins a place in the fate of her husband and figure out whose story is primary: his literary lovers or her own. Sergei Barkhin inscribes the iconic details of everyday life in a monumental, skyward-looking space in which a private love story of two people, thanks to the scale of Tolstoy's personality, turns into a prophetic phenomenon. The rhymes of reality and scenes from "Anna Karenina" border on the insanity of the wife of a genius who got lost somewhere on the pages of his novel.

And then, in this fusion of the real and the artistic, the author becomes the most tragic figure in his creations.

Marius Ivaskevicius

Quotes

Combining truth with delicacy is very difficult. This is possible primarily thanks to Evgenia Simonova, who plays Sophia Tolstaya. The actress waited for the role in her native theater. Not once did she allow herself, playing a nervous, unbalanced, even hysterical woman, to fall into painful neurasthenia, to humiliate her character with petty interpretations in the most difficult scenes, as in a fight with Chertkov, in scandals with her daughter. On the contrary, Simonova plays Sophia as a figure, in some ways equal to Tolstoy. After all, she is ready to leave before him and leaves Yasnaya Polyana, she turns her prayer to leave the estate together and live out old age in happy solitude. A tormented woman paints this pastoral picture as hell rages around her. ("Independent newspaper")

The "Russian Romance" is dedicated to Leo Tolstoy and the creations of his mind and heart - from the family (interpreted in a broad sense - Ivashkevicius includes Chertkov, Dr. Dushan, and Baba Aksinya) to novel characters led by Anna Karenina. The whirling currents of the play and the large, three and a half hour, densely populated ensemble performance are formed, however, not so much around the pillar of Russian literature, but around his wife, played in an outstanding way by Evgenia Simonova - and even around the barely perceptible matter formed from the remnants of ideas, troubles and absurdities of a century ago. Company "Dialogue Dance", Kostroma

Nominations: "Modern dance / performance", "Ballet-modern dance / female role"(Marusya Sokolnikova)
Production: Alexander Andriyashkin
Lighting: Ivan Estegneev, Natalia Kuznetsova
Performed by: Marusya Sokolnikova

From the theater

The idea of the performance was born about a year and a half ago, when choreographer Alexander Andriyashkin jokingly suggested that the PR manager of one of the most famous dance companies in Russia, Dialogue Dance, go on stage and talk about modern dance. At first, the joke turned into negotiations, a laboratory, and then into a rehearsal and a full-fledged performance, where the main and only role is played not by a professional artist, but by a person who is constantly nearby, but remains behind the scenes.
As a result, we become witnesses of a small miracle - within an hour, before our eyes, the usual office worker takes the stage and, with the help of words and movements, plays scenes from life, shares experiences and asks questions that go far beyond the scope of dance. If you try to reduce everything to one sentence, you get something like: "Why do we all continue to do what we do?". But the performance is not about boredom and obsessive introspection, but about a step that everyone should try to take. At least once in a lifetime.

"It was important and interesting for me to try to combine dance, theatrical and performance experience, but in such a way that at the end it was just a performance. Not just a person-document on stage, but artistic comprehension, a statement, realized by artistic methods. That is, so that the performance eventually becomes more important than the document, and not vice versa. And in this sense, I was very lucky with Marusya, her perfectionism and attitude. The fact that for her this is the first experience, for me it rather worked as an inability to plan rehearsal time. It seems to you, well, now we’ll work on this part for about twenty minutes and then we’ll go further, and this time it takes three hours and all the strength. But at the same time, if you carefully and painstakingly work with your interest and skill, then through certain tools a person who has not mastered them before is able to make a valuable statement. And as a result, we are present for an hour, generally speaking, at a small miracle, when a person enters the stage who really was sitting in the office, and suddenly he does everything - drags the topic, keeps the form, keeps his attention so wealthy that I and I myself sometimes forget that Marusya is not a professional."

Alexander Andriyashkin

Quotes

Scientists say that the ability to laugh at yourself prolongs life. If so, then this performance is the key to the longevity of Russian contemporary dance. "the_Marusya" is a play-joke, a shifter, where the manager becomes an artist, and the artists become producers. PR-manager of the dance company "Dialogue Dance" Marusya Sokolnikova for the first time in her life acts as a solo performer and dancer. Ironically over the incidents of backstage cuisine, over clichés, which, for their not so long life managed to acquire Russian modern dance, she reflects on serious things. About a man at a crossroads, about a passion for business and fatigue from the profession. About fears and doubts. About the right and courage one day to suddenly turn everything upside down. (Magazine "Your leisure")

Sokolnikova works completely fearlessly, but she feels the measure. She speaks for herself, flirts a little with the viewer, splashes an avalanche of charm on the audience, reminds the heroine of Nonna Mordyukova from the movie " simple story", who was chosen as the chairman of the collective farm. Marusya has nothing to hide, Marusya understands that it is not the gods who burn the pots. A press release, which always talks about loneliness, wanderers, rays of hope, searching for oneself, is written solely to attract attention, everyone needs beautiful fairy tale about the creation of the project, if you start telling the truth, then your hair will move, no one really knows "from what rubbish poetry grows." But Marusya knows. (Sub-cult.ru)

At the last ceremony of presenting the Russian national theater award, "Russian Romance" turned out to be a real triumph - he was awarded the "Golden Mask" in three categories at once: "Drama / performance of a large form"; "Female role" ( Evgenia Simonova) and "The Playwright's Work" ( Marius Ivaskevicius).

The decision of the jury hardly came as a surprise to anyone. Immediately after the premiere, "Russian Romance" gained a reputation as a significant production, with outstanding acting achievements (by the way, in addition to Evgenia Simonova, "The Mask" was also nominated for Tatyana Orlova, who played two supporting roles in the play at once) and excellent scenography (designed by the legendary theater designer Sergei Barkhin). “Our performance is very versatile. For some, this form, where living people and literary characters coexist, may seem complicated, someone simply does not accept it. But this notion of Ivashkevičius is brilliant,” believes the People's Artist of Russia Yevgenia Simonova, who plays Sofya Andreevna as a figure, in some ways equal to Tolstoy.

And then, in this fusion of the real and the artistic, the author becomes the most tragic figure in his creations.” With this quote from Marius Ivashkevičius, the most famous playwright in Lithuania, who first wrote a play in Russian and received the Golden Mask for it, the Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theater presents The Russian Novel on its website www.mayakovsky.ru.

Viewers of all three cities where the Golden Mask in Latvia festival is taking place will be able to watch the Russian Romance: on October 10 in Riga, on the stage of the Daile Theatre, on October 12 in the Ventspils Theater House Jūras Vārti, and on October 14 in Liepaja theatre.

The general partners of the Golden Mask in Latvia for 12 years have been the company Severstal and Rietum Banka. The festival is supported by the Ministries of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Federation, the Embassies of the Republic of Latvia and the Russian Federation, the State Cultural Capital Fund of Latvia, the Riga City Council, the Liepaja City Council, the Ventspils City Council and the Freeport of Riga Authority.

RIGA, September 20 - Sputnik, Alexey Stefanov. The Vladimir Mayakovsky Moscow Academic Theater goes on tour to Riga, Liepaja, Ventspils and Tallinn. Latvian and Estonian spectators at the festival " golden mask"From October 10 to 17, they will see the play "Russian Romance" based on the play by the Lithuanian playwright Marius Ivashkevicius, staged by the artistic director of the Mayakovsky Theater Mindaugas Karbauskis.

"The last time we brought the performance "Talents and Admirers" to Latvia and Estonia as part of the "Golden Mask". It was exactly five years ago - in the fall of 2012. But since the scenery of this performance is very large-scale, we performed only in Riga and Tallinn. The scenography of the "Russian Novel" is more mobile and allows you to bring it to Liepaja and Ventspils, although in several theaters you will have to dismantle a part for the show. auditorium, thereby increasing the stage space - after all, we show our performances exactly in the form in which the audience in Moscow watches it," said Leonid Osharin, director of the Mayakovsky Theater on the eve of the tour.

The choice of the performance is not accidental - at the last Russian national award "Golden Mask" it was awarded prizes in three categories at once - "Best Actress", " Best Job playwright" and "The best dramatic performance of a large form." Now "Russian Romance" is very much awaited not only in Moscow, but also in other cities of Russia, where the Mayakovsky Theater will tour.

The script for "Russian Novel", based on the biography and work of Leo Tolstoy, was written by the famous Lithuanian playwright Marius Ivashkevicius, and staged by artistic director Mayakovsky Theater Mindaugas Karbauskis. Nevertheless, it is in Lithuania that the "Russian Romance" will not be seen.

“Honestly, I don’t know why. This is more a question for the organizers. Despite the fact that the tour takes place as part of the Golden Mask festival, the Russian side takes on only part of the costs, the rest is on the host side. Perhaps it didn’t work out to establish contact. Although these are just assumptions. I know that Lithuanians will come to see our performances in Latvia: Lithuanian viewers have already bought about 300 tickets for the Russian Romance," Osharin said.

But not only sophisticated theatergoers are waiting for the arrival of the artists of the Mayakovsky Theater - the artists themselves, as well as everyone who participates in the tour program, want to be in Riga and Tallinn as soon as possible.

"On our last visit, we were delighted with the old cities - we spent everything there free time because the atmosphere there is just crazy, every corner is full of history. And it's wonderful that all this is so well integrated into the urban environment - not locked up, but open to everyone. So, I think, this time, before and after the performances, we will be happy to walk among the cozy antiquity, "Osharin admitted.

"In Riga, we will definitely walk along the alley near National Opera, we will visit the tree of the Mayakovsky Theater, which we solemnly planted exactly five years ago during the previous tour of the Golden Mask, - added the director of the theater.

Leonid Osharin also shared his memory of how, on a previous trip, passers-by in Riga literally stopped Svetlana Nemolyaeva at every step and asked to take a picture with her, "and she did not refuse anyone, meekly agreed, even queues lined up."

The break between tours in the Baltic countries was very long, but it is quite possible that the Mayakovsky Theater will return to Latvia and Estonia very soon.

"We have a very popular, unusual performance Based on the book by American neuropsychologist Oliver Sachs, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. This is the premiere of last season. We played it in a 100-seat chamber hall and only at the end of the season made a transformation, increasing the number of spectators to 250 people, since all tickets were sold out two or three months in advance. It is quite possible that this performance will soon see the Latvian and Estonian audience. If we finally agree with the host, then we will return to you with a tour next year. And, most likely, again to Riga, Liepaja, Ventspils and Tallinn," promised Leonid Osharin.
