Laurel branch symbol. Why did the laurel wreath become a symbol of victory in ancient Greece?

Ta incredible story happened, remember, in August 2014. Karina Chikitova lived in the small village of Olom when she was 3 years 8 months old. When the child disappeared, they missed him immediately: they decided that the girl had left with her father, who lived separately in a neighboring village. And only on the third day, like a bolt from the blue: neither mother nor father has a girl. They searched for her for 12 days, and found her alive - thanks to true friend, puppy. In honor of Karina and her dog Naida, a monument was even erected at the Yakutsk airport, and a whole book on history was published “Karina. 12 days in the taiga. After 4 years, Komsomolskaya Pravda found Karina. It turns out that this story dramatically changed the life of a little girl from a tiny village and her family.

two in taiga

First, a little more about those incredible events. At the end of July 2014, Karina with her 21-year-old mother Talina came to visit her grandmother in the village of Olom from the regional center of Olekminsk (70 km). (Olom is a tiny village, only three houses, eight inhabitants. Around the taiga and swamps). On July 29, my father also came here from a neighboring village to visit Karina (he has been living separately for a long time, he has a different family). On the same day, Karina's mother went to mowing, her grandmother went to bed. In the evening, when everyone gathered at home, they saw that neither Karina's father nor herself was there.

“I took him to visit me,” the family decided, since he was going to do so. They could not check this in any way - there is no cellular connection.

Three days later, Karina's father came to Olom again. One.

Yes, I did not take my daughter with me, - he was surprised.

It became clear that there was a problem. Immediately called the police, rescuers, cynologists. More than a hundred people combed the taiga, fought off hordes of mosquitoes. Once we met a bear, which we had to scare away with shots. For all the time they examined 30 square kilometers, nothing ...

A miracle happened on the 9th day after the disappearance - unexpectedly, Karin's beloved puppy ran into the village. Then his name was "kyrachaan" - translated from the Yakut "baby". The name Naida was given to him (her) later. The puppy disappeared on the same day as the girl, but then few people attached any importance to this. Hungry, wet, trembling - apparently wandered through the taiga all these days. The rescuers immediately sent a service dog in the direction from which he came. And it helped, although Karina was not found immediately, only three days later.

She sat in a thicket of reeds and was silent. I didn't even notice her. She saw me herself and held out her hands. I picked her up, she is so small, light as a feather. Legs, hands and face bitten to the point of blood. Scared to death, no shoes. Immediately asked for a drink, said she wanted to eat. And she cried. To be honest, I myself could hardly hold back my tears, - said the volunteer Artem Borisov, who first saw her.

My Naida saved me, - Karina later told the rescuers. - I was very scared. But we went to bed with her, I hugged her. And together we were warm.

For 12 days of wandering through the forest, Karina lost a third of her weight, withstood serious psychological stress. But it didn't break. And this is in less than 4 years!

"Next was alive soul»

Journalist Victoria Gabysheva became interested in the story of a brave girl. She visited Karina and Talina Chikitovs, saw with her own eyes where everything happened, listened to the stories of a brave girl. The book is called "Karina. 12 days in the taiga” came out on 197 pages. Very emotional. After its release, the writer invited both of them to stay with her in Yakutsk. This was in June 2016.

It is difficult to imagine an urban child in the taiga, alone, - the writer shares her emotions. - I was amazed that this little girl knew how to prepare for the night: she chose a place, she tore grass for a bed. She survived also largely thanks to the dog. It is important that in such a situation there was a living soul nearby. And Naida the dog was just such a soul.

Sculptor Nikolai Chochchasov made the monument "The Girl and the Dog". It was installed on the square near Yakutsk airport. Learned very symbolically.

And new people appeared in the life of the Chikitovs.

Newspaper article

Our acquaintance with Karina and her mother happened in June 2016, - says Albina Cherepanova, politician, CEO Yakutsk stock center. - A 4-year-old grandson came to me, we read the book “Karina. 12 days in the taiga,” Albina Prokopyevna tells us. - He was very impressed, he wanted to meet Karina. And I thought - we could help the family if she needs something. Although it seemed to me then a problem: our heroine, after all, lived then in Olom. From Yakutsk, where we are, it is 600 kilometers! Suddenly, by chance, at that moment, a photograph in the newspaper caught my eye: a monument to a girl and a dog at the airport, and Karina next to him. I immediately went to the editorial office, to the photographer and found out: they had already taken tickets for the “rocket” and were sailing home tomorrow. I thought - well, what is waiting for the girl, what are the prospects? And I can help her! I came to them (they were visiting Victoria Gabysheva) and said: "You won't go anywhere." And Talina listened to me.

The very next day, Albina Cherepanova, using her abilities and connections, identified the girl in one of the children's sanatoriums. Talina's mother began to look for work and housing in Yakutsk. Her life changed dramatically: she soon met a good man, got married. Together they left for Olekminsk. Now they have a place to live and a job. And Karina's brother is growing up, he is already 1 year and 3 months old. Well, the girl remained in Yakutsk - a different fate awaited her.

"I miss Naida"

On December 26, Karina will turn 9 years old. Now she is studying in the second grade of the Yakut Choreographic College Yakutskaya ballet school(college) named after Akseniya and Natalya Poselsky. Albina Cherepanova took her under guardianship - unofficially, but at the behest of her heart. She helped to pass the casting and was very glad that the girl was enrolled. No patronage - Karina herself is suitable for ballet in all respects: flexible, graceful, very photogenic.

We got through to Yakutsk:

Karinochka is studying with us for the second year, ”said Ekaterina Ammosova, head of the college dormitory, willingly. - When she came to us for the first time, she was very reserved. She avoided people, looked at everyone with big frightened black eyes, strove to hide. And now you don’t recognize her - she made friends with everyone, became sociable and open. A very independent girl. She is our favorite.

In truth, Karina even now does not like the increased attention when someone completely unfamiliar approaches her to take a picture, as if with a curiosity. And he doesn’t like it very much when they do it on the sly, he tries to escape.

She told us about this herself, - by phone, to which the teachers invited her at our request:

I like to study, - says Karina in a clear childish voice, in which bells ring. - Sometimes it's hard, but I still like it. I have already performed on stage. I want to become a ballerina and dance in Swan Lake. I also learned to play the khomuz ( or jew's harp - plucked reed instrument- approx. ed.

Karina turned out to be a talented girl, she dreams of becoming a ballerina and dancing in Swan Lake. Photo: Yakutsk Choreographic College

Of course, Karina misses her family. They are so far away. She stayed at home during the summer holidays, now she is waiting - she can’t wait for the new year, when she can visit them again. And she also misses her pet and savior - the dog Naida. The dog lives in Olekminsk with his mother. She is always happy when her young mistress comes.

I saw a monument that stands near the airport. We are similar, especially Naida, - shared Karina at parting.

So, you heard - Swan Lake"! Teachers say that the girl has great potential, she will show herself and surprise everyone. This is how one case, which almost ended in tragedy, turned the life of a brave girl upside down. Is it possible then not to believe in miracles?

We thank the staff of the Yakut Choreographic College and Albina Prokopievna Cherepanova for their help in preparing the material.

The sweet taste of victory, deafening applause, world fame and enthusiastic exclamations of admirers in honor of the conquered peaks and new open horizons ... All this is inextricably linked in our minds with such fixed expressions, how to “win the palm”, “be kissed by Fortune” and “put a laurel wreath on your head”. All this has become so familiar and ordinary for us that few people even think about the meaning of these words, and even more so do not delve into the history of their appearance. Nevertheless, it is the realization of the simplest truths that often turns out to be one of the most difficult tasks, and therefore it is sometimes very important to understand the essence of them.

Appeal to flora

Like many other realities of our modern life, such a concept as a "laurel wreath" originates in Ancient Greece, at the very origins of our cultural traditions, beliefs and views on art and the world in general. You do not need to be a specialist in the field of biology in order to understand what, in fact, this expression is associated with.

The name of this item is quite obviously associated with one of the oldest symbols borrowed from the world of flora - the laurel tree, common in the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, the history of the emergence of this symbol is much more complex and romantic. In order to understand the essence of the meaning, one should turn to Greek mythology.

Connection with the golden-haired god

For a person who understands Antiquity, a laurel wreath is inextricably linked with the name of Apollo, the son of the powerful Zeus and the goddess Leto. Traditionally, this representative of the Greek pantheon is depicted as a beautiful young man with a bow in his hand and a harp behind his back. Thanks to his amazing beauty, grace and masculinity, it is he who is considered a kind of ideal of the male body and appearance in general. And the famous laurel wreath adorns the head of Apollo, the appearance of which is associated with a romantic but tragic love story.

Arrow of Eros

According to myths, the beautiful son of Zeus, in addition to a sharp eye and the gift of foresight, also had an excessively large conceit, for which he later had to pay. Eros, who decided to teach Apollo a lesson, pierced his heart with a magic arrow of love, and the young man burned with love for the daughter of the river god Peneus, the nymph Daphne.

Fate was not favorable to the beautiful god, and the girl did not share his feelings. Obeying the torment of his heart, Apollo rushed in pursuit of Daphne, but he failed to catch up with her - exhausted, the nymph called out to her father, asking him for help and salvation. Peneus answered the prayer of his beloved daughter in a very peculiar way - Daphne's thin frame was covered with bark, her hands turned into branches stretched out to the sky, and her hair changed to green bay leaves.

Realizing that he was not destined to be with his beloved, the son of Zeus wove a wreath as a memory of the unrequited feeling for the beautiful nymph, which later became his symbol and permanent attribute.

First sign of victory

Nevertheless, the ending of this rather sad story was not so gloomy. Everyone knows that the laurel wreath is a symbol of victory in modern world. It was this meaning that the ancient Greeks invested in it, rewarding the best participants Pythian games, arranged to honor the god of beauty and sunlight, Apollo. Since then, the world has made it a tradition to crown the head of the winner with a wreath from this evergreen plant with a sad history.

Lavr and other nations

This tree had a deep meaning and power not only for the Greeks and Romans, who inherited their traditions. The laurel wreath also had a different meaning. For example, residents ancient China it symbolized eternal life and rebirth.

In the Christian tradition, this tree is almost inextricably linked with the funeral ceremony, since it was laurel wreaths that were used, as a rule, at funerals.

Becoming a symbol of victory

Few people know, but the modern understanding of this peculiar decoration appeared largely due to the Great French bourgeois revolution. It was then that the laurel wreath - a symbol of victory - became such, entering heraldry. In the 18th century, the branches of this plant adorned the coat of arms of the French Republic, and then the banners of other countries.

Value conversion

It is no secret that the ancient Greeks, and then the Romans, paid great attention to sports, arranging numerous games and grandiose competitions. Decorating the head with a laurel wreath as a reward was at that time only available to outstanding wrestlers or, for example, javelin throwers.

Nevertheless, times are changing, and traditions are changing along with them - in the modern world, not only athletes, but also outstanding figures of culture, art, science and even journalism every now and then get the privilege of crowning their heads with a wreath of laurel leaves.

The biggest difference is that today it has become more of a common figurative expression than the actual material embodiment of a victory won. Nevertheless, medals, cups and diplomas decorated with these floral ornament, today it is absolutely impossible to call a rarity. The symbol of victory, which arose in the distant times of Antiquity, has survived to this day, having been transformed over time, but without losing its greatness.

Or a laurel branch - since Greco-Roman antiquity - a symbol of glory, victory or peace. The victors put on a laurel wreath; the ships of the victors were decorated with laurels. On solemn occasions, all the people were married to L.; the priests wore laurel wreaths during the sacrifices. L. was dedicated to Apollo, in explanation of which the myth of Daphne was created (see); in the Pythian games, L. was an award to the winner, and they were also awarded to "Apollo's favorites" - poets. This relationship between Apollo and L. explains the attribution to L, a prophetic gift: the priests ate it to find out the future (laurel eaters). There was also a belief that L. saves from lightning. See Laureate.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Apollo and Daphne. 1622-1625

≈ Laurel tree / Laurel wreath / Laurel branch / Laurels /

Greek daphne, lat. laurus

Bot.: Ordinary laurel(Laurus nobilis), a small tree (2 to 5 m) or tall shrub of the laurel family (Lauraceae). Perennial leaves oblong-lanceolate with wavy-folded margins. Berry-shaped fruit is oval, black. Asia Minor is considered its homeland. The essential oil contained in its leaves and fruits determines its value as a condiment (leaves) and medicine (fruits).

Of the various laurel trees (among which cinnamon and avocado are found), the small-leaved laurel, Laurus nobilis, from which the victor's crown was made, has an ancient and enduring symbolic meaning.

Since Greco-Roman antiquity, laurel, its branches, laurel wreaths and garlands have been a symbol of glory, victory or peace. The victors put on a laurel wreath; the ships of the victors were decorated with laurels. On especially solemn occasions, all the people were crowned with laurels. The words laureate and possibly bachelor (baccalauratus) come from the custom of decorating with laurels the heads of people who have excelled in the sciences or art (raised to the degree of doctor).

Since bay leaves never wither, remaining green, laurel has become a symbol of eternity, renewal of life and immortality. This meaning is more typical for a laurel wreath or garland.

The connection of the laurel with chastity seems to go back to its dedication to the Vestal virgins and Diana.

The idea of participation in fertility in one sense or another is characteristic of all plant symbolism.

Antiquity

Victory, triumph, truce and peace. Being evergreen, laurel symbolizes eternity and immortality.

Sacred plant in the cult of the sun gods. Hence the diverse use of its branches and leaves in triumphs and divine services among the Greeks and Romans.

Laurel wreaths and branches were depicted on coins and gems as attributes of Jupiter and Apollo.

Priests put on laurel wreaths during sacrifices, and burned laurel branches together with sacrificial animals: their crackling was considered a good omen.

Festive garlands and wreaths were woven from bay leaves.

Award "Apollo's favorites" - poets.

"The crowning of poets, actors or winners with a laurel wreath meant not a tribute to the external, visual consecration of the act, but a recognition that this act, by its very existence, speaks of the recognition of victories over the negative and corrupting influence of passions."

Dedicated to Apollo.

The myth of the transformation of his beloved Daphne into a laurel bush was intended to explain the connection between God and this plant.

The symbol of magical power is the plant of soothsayers and soothsayers. With its help, Apollo made predictions, laurel groves surrounded the temples of Apollo. The Pythia at Delphi chewed bay leaves when she sat on a tripod crowned with laurel. In addition to chewing laurel (laurel eaters), soothsayers also burned it before pronouncing a prediction.

Healing power and the ability to purify from spiritual defilement were attributed to bay leaves. Bay leaves were used in the ritual of cleansing from spilled blood. So Apollo cleansed himself with laurel after killing the dragon-serpent Python and Orestes, who killed his mother Clytemnestra.

For centuries, the goddess Nike (Victoria) has been depicted with a laurel wreath in her hands, which she places on the head of victorious heroes. It also symbolized the peace that follows the victory over the enemy.

In the Pythian games, the laurel was awarded to the winners.

Laurel was also sacred to the god of ecstasy Dionysus (along with ivy),

Resurrection, renewal, glory and honor

Dedicated to Jupiter: it was believed that the laurel tree (the only tree planted by man) was never struck by lightning and, moreover, saves from it. Also dedicated to Juno, Diana, Silvanus.

Since the laurel was dedicated to the vestal virgins, who took a forever vow of chastity, it personifies purity.

Victorious messages and weapons were wrapped around the laurel and folded in front of the image of Jupiter.

It was considered a protective plant: on Ludi Apollinaris (Latin - festivities in honor of Apollo), the original purpose of which was to prevent an epidemic, the audience wore laurel wreaths.

Christianity

Borrowed in ancient culture as a symbol of the victory of the Christian faith over death.

Eternity and chastity. In early Christianity, a symbol of eternal life or new life, which will come due to the redemptive acts of Christ.

St. Paul contrasts the incorruptible crown, with which a Christian ascetic is crowned, with the perishable crown, which is received by the victorious on the lists (1 Cor. 9:24-27).

The laurel wreath also symbolizes martyrdom.
