You can brew coffee without getting up from the sofa in a smart coffee maker or see what's left in our smart fridge right from the store. But the concept does not only penetrate the b2c segment.
Many gas pipeline networks are already hung with control sensors, and it is not enough for engineers to have a single central control point - they need to be equipped with mobile applications. So they can get up-to-date data and interact with the system “in the fields”.
Even seemingly conservative companies like Russian Railways install sensors on track sections to analyze the load on the rails. And there is an application to work with all this.
What can you do with a mobile IoT app?
- Observe (readings of instruments, sensors, video).

This data is transmitted to the server, where the user is scored: how well he drives the car (how he slows down, accelerates, exceeds the speed limit). The application allows the user to analyze their driving style and adjust it to get a good discount.
- Security systems are also becoming smart, cloud-based and mobile. We worked with the Sea-Nord company, which serves hundreds of facilities in different cities. There is no web interface here. But with mobile phone you can arm and disarm objects, take readings with a temperature, fire, gas, leak sensor. And all this allows you to make a mobile application.
- There is another interesting type of application - those that act as a server. That is, they are a full-fledged routing and data processing center, they independently implement business logic. For example, a cafe automation system operating on the counter service model with service at the checkout. At first glance, this looks simple.
The system consists of dozens of devices that are connected to a local network and controlled using the iPad. The network works autonomously without access to the Internet, but, if there is a network, it is synchronized with the "cloud". Some iPads are at the checkout, some are in the kitchen and at the bar, others are at the waiters. Checkout gadgets are responsible for routing orders between devices and getting back execution statistics. They interact with peripheral devices: printers, fiscal registrars, cash drawer, card reader. Even reporting to the tax office is sent online through a specially connected fiscal registrar.
What are the subtleties of the development of "smart" systems?
Scary picture? But you have to maintain this system in order to understand which devices to connect to what and manage access rights in conditions where you cannot rely on remembering a password by a specific user (for example, a password from a medical device by a nurse).

A person comes with a mobile application, presses a button and takes a bike. I want everything to happen quickly. But the problem is that the stations are not connected to the city's power grid. They are powered by the sun. And there is little sun in St. Petersburg. A charge is rarely enough for a whole day.
In the development of such systems, it is necessary to optimize the interaction of applications with hardware and think over the cunning schedule of their modems, day and night modes. And user requests should not be sent in real time, but every few seconds (depending on the time of day). This method is more energy efficient, but not easy to develop. Numerous tests have ensured the stability of the system: delays are not significant for users and stations do not run out of power.
