Or maybe, during your already planned trip, you get so bored with sightseeing under the monotonous mumbling of a guide that you suddenly decide to break loose and break away at one of the most significant events in the world of metal? Well, go ahead!

Best Metal Festivals 2017 in Europe

Download

Where: England, Derby, Donington Park

For whom: The proud successor to the legendary Monsters of Rock festival, which has been held annually since 2003 and attracts more than twenty thousand headbangers, the Download festival is rightfully considered one of the most significant and large-scale events in the field of metal and rock music. Just look at the names of the bands that once performed there: Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Deftones, Metallica, Slayer, Linkin Park, Meshuggah, Guns N' Roses, The Dillinger Escape Plan and many others. The list is actually very tasty and it can be continued for a very, very long time. You better take a look at who will be there in 2017. The headliners are System Of A Down, Biffy Clyro and Aerosmith. There will be a chance to hear a bunch of other cool stuff as well - like Mastodon, Rage Against The Machine, Prophets of Rage, Slayer, Red Fang, Opeth, Clutch - just for starters.

desertfest

Where:
England, London, Camden

For whom: Attention, the composition of the participants of this festival causes profuse salivation and excessive sweating among lovers of sludge and stoner. So, the Easter eggs of Desertfest 2017: the marijuana metal gods Bongzilla, the epic doomers Sleep, the atmospheric blackers Wolves In The Throne Room and Celeste, the funky deathpunks Turbonegro, the sludge-doom guys Saint Vitus, the brilliant and legendary John Garcia, performing with solo project, as well as in his stoner band Slo Burn.

Wacken Open Air

Where: Germany, Wacken

For whom: Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Mayhem, Napalm Death, Status Quo, Orange Goblin, Turbonegro, Crowbar - that's who. The festival's motto "Louder than Hell" is quite eloquent; Probably not more to say here. It is simply impossible to imagine the top "Best Metal Festivals 2017" without this holiday!

hellfest

Where: France, Clison

For whom: This year's Hellfest lineup is so epic it looks like it's waiting for us triumphant return good old Monsters of Rock. Already announced deep purple, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Saxon, The Damned, Blue Öyster Cult, Pentagram, Hawkwind… Need more? Okay, how about Apocalyptica, In Flames, Kreator, Primus, The Dillinger Escape Plan and a couple dozen more big names with even louder sounds?

bloodstock

Where: England, Derbyshire

For whom: In 2017, Amon Amarth and Megadeth were announced as headliners at the UK's largest independent metal festival. And you can also hear Hatebreed, Blind Guardian, Annihilator, Obituary, Whitechapel... By the way, last year's Bloodstock was so hard metal that they sold black ice cream there. Nice.

Roadburn

Where: The Netherlands, Tilburg

For whom: The composition is very multifaceted and does not rest on one heavy. In addition to Baroness, Deafheaven, Disfear, My Dying Bride, Ulver, Oathbreaker, Chelsea Wolfe, Rome, Dälek, Gnod, Aluk Todolo, Author&Punisher and a lot more have been announced. Such a batch of cool experimental projects really asks to take a vacation at the end of April and wind up in the Netherlands.

Copenhell

Where: Denmark, Copenhagen, Refhalejoen

For whom: Old school lovers - at Overkill, Carcass, Saxon, Candlemass and Rob Zombie. However, there are plenty of youngsters at the festival, like Prophets of Rage, Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes. Oh yeah, and also System of a Down and Five Finger Death Punch. So shake your beard and shake the old days!

Obscene Extreme

Where: Czech Republic, Trutnov

For whom: We all know and love the Czech Republic for one foamy drink - you can come to the festival for the sake of it, of course, but in general, judging by the composition, there will be real trash, waste and sodomy. Spanish, Slovak and Greek grindcore, horror rock and classic California powerviolence. Hardcore Infest and iconic British punks Discharge. And a playground for little metalheads to have fun too.

Nova Rock

Where: Austria, Nickelsdorf

For whom: Held since 2005, Nova Rock looks like the most "pop" of other festivals - because of Linkin Park, Blink-182, System Of A Down and Green Day. But actually, the list of confirmed bands includes Slayer, and Mastodon, and Sabaton, and Gojira, and, uh, Fatboy Slim, but oh well - in short, for every taste.

Graspop Metal Meeting

Where: Belgium, Dessel

For whom: Perfectly balanced line-up: here you have the classics represented by Deep Purple, and the eternally young oldies Rammstein and Ministry. Thrashers Suicidal Tendencies. Hardcore Comeback Kid and Hatebreed. Fierce blackers Mayhem. Stoners Red Fang and Clutch. Death metal by Gojira. Cheerful black-n-rollers Kvelertak. The choice is so good that you don’t even know who to rank as the main favorites.

metal days

Where: Slovenia, Tolmin

For whom: The fifth anniversary of the Slovenian Metal Days is enticing with such bands as Bloodbath, Equilibrium, Kadavar, Katatonia, Marilyn Manson, Opeth, Pain, Shining (Norwegian, if anything), Krisiun and Sanctuary, as well as such great names as Rectal Smegma and Vasectomy.

Graspop Metal Meeting

metal days

Tuska

Where: Finland, Helsinki, Suvilahti

For whom: Finland is generally known for its love of metal, and in particular for metal festivals, the number of which cannot be counted on the fingers (and toes). But Tuska - the biggest metal festival not only in Finland but also in Europe - should be on our list. The lineup has just begun to form, so the final line-up will be clear closer to the summer, but it is already known that Suicidal Tendencies, Mayhem, Brujeria, HIM, Electric Wizard, Apocalyptica, Battle Beast and Oranssi Pazuzu will perform.

We are glad if our top "Best Metal Festivals 2017" helped you learn something new and plan your holiday. For those who cannot afford to travel abroad, we remind you that Russian metal festivals will form their line-ups in the near future. For lovers of alternative music, we advise you to pay attention to, which will be held on July 05 in Moscow. Already, Twin Atlantic and.

What is summer without a music festival? No, of course, there is always Turkey with All Inclusive hotels, or at least friends with dried fish and beer on the river bank, but this is definitely not our format. After all, what should I write about on September 1 in my essay “How did I spend my summer?” Partyanimal prefers leisure, which is why we have compiled a calendar of key music festivals in Europe for the summer of 2017. Let's decide!

Primavera Sound Barcelona

Where: Barcelona, Spain

Who:!!!, Aphex Twin, Arcade Fire, BADBADNOTGOOD, Bon Iver, Broken Social Scene, Death Grips, Flying Lotus, Frank Ocean, Glass Animals, Grace Jones, King Krule, Mac DeMarco, Metronomy, Preoccupations, Run the Jewels, Saint Etienne , Slayer, Solange, Swans, Van Morrison, Wild Beasts, The xx, The Zombies with the album "Odessey & Oracle" and many others.

The famous urban festival, which takes place annually off the coast of the Balearic Sea in Barcelona and opens the festival summer in Europe, has long become a Mecca for hipsters around the world. And even if this time the organizers again decided to separate and invited Slayer to headliners, it still looks more modest than in (at that time, for example, Radiohead and Air were announced). But how do you know? Primavera is traditionally a forge of new stars, so it is possible that some of the little-known performers announced this year will collect full houses at the most prestigious world venues in a few years. Vladimir Ivkovic or someone Kokoshca, for example.

How many: season tickets, alas, are already sold out, a ticket for 1 day will cost 80 euros *

Orange Warsaw

Where: Warsaw Poland

Who: Kings of Leon, Justice, Years & Years, Imagine Dragons, Kodaline, Martin Garrix and more

Another city festival, but not in the distant Pyrenees, but in friendly Poland, Orange Warsaw is a much more affordable option. Line-up, of course, is not the brightest, but, in extreme cases, it can always be eaten with a zhurek and washed down with a snot. And, in the end, you can be sure that the trip will turn out to be budgetary, which is important in our “cool hours”. About how it was last year

How many: two-day subscription - PLN 379 (EUR 89)

Here's how it was last year:

Rock Am Ring / Rock im Park

Where: Nuerburg, Germany

Who: System of a Down, Rammstein, Liam Gallagher, Die Toten Hosen, Prophets of Rage, In Flames, Bastille, Die Toten Hosen, Slaves, Jake Bugg, Sum 41, Bonaparte, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and more

Twin festivals that take place simultaneously in different locations and have been gathering heavy music lovers for many years now. For the past two years, Rock Am Ring has taken place at the former Mendig airfield, and this year the festival returns to the Nürburgring, the race track that has been held since 1985. Rock Im Park will run parallel to Zeppelinfield, which hosted Nazi conventions in the 1930s. Fortunately, all this is in the past, and instead of Hitler and Goebbels, Rammstein and SOAD will anneal.

Where: London, Great Britain

A one-day fest in one of the parks of the British capital - taking into account the cost of flights and accommodation, the option is not cheap, but extremely curious. And all thanks to the composition of the participants - here you will find the rising stars of trip-hop HÆLOS, and venerable electronic artists in the range from Aphex Twin to Nicolas Jaar, and the Syrian troubadour Omar Souleyman, and one of the pioneers of Slowdive shoegaze, and many other colorful characters.

Who: Jamiroquai, Moderat, Roosevelt, Justice, UNKLE, Thomas Azier, Norah Jones, Digitalism, LP, Benjamin Clementine, Imagine Dragons, alt-J, Birdy, Nouvelle Vague, Michael Kiwanuka and others

An unusual option for the summer is Czech Ostrava. The festival is good at least because it will be possible to capture the comeback of the famous Jamiroquai with the first studio album in seven years, as well as listen to such a rare guest of summer musical hodgepodges as Norah Jones or, for example, the sunny French cover ensemble Nouvelle Vague. Well, if the lounge gets bored, then there is a win-win option -

In addition to veterans RHCP and Pixies, the chart hero The Weeknd and the languid Lana Del Rey, the organizers promise a solo performance by Liam Gallagher, who still does not lose hope of outdoing his more successful brother.

How many: two-day ticket - 149 euros

OFF Festival

Where: Katowice, Poland

Who: PJ Harvey The Black Madonna, Shellac, Daniel Johnston and others

A camping festival in Katowice, Poland, which, although covering different genres, positions itself as “non-mainstream”. This year the fest will feature PJ Harvey, who needs no introduction, honorary experimenters Swans (who, by the way, will give), Kurt Cobain's idol, half-life manic-depressed singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston, post-hardcore Shellac and other entertaining characters.

Who: Frank Ocean, The xx, Pixies, Regina Spektor, Mac DeMarco, Conor Obrest, Feist, Jon Hopkins , Lana Del Rey, Perfume Genius, Sampha, Band of Horses, Major Lazer, Young Thug, The Black Madonna, George Erza and more

A rather young city festival, which takes place annually in Swedish Gothenburg. Way Out West takes place in the large Slotskogen Park, which is easily accessible by public transport. There are only three scenes at the fest - unfortunately, mistakes are inevitable. The line-up is now at the stage of formation - among the already announced performers, in addition to the obvious stars, it is impossible not to mention the favorites of music critics Perfume Genius, Mac DeMarco and Regina Spektor, a rare guest of festivals.

How many: 1440-2240 SEK (152-237 euros)

The legendary festival, which needs no introduction, is one of the main sources of income for Hungarian tourism. Sziget, by the way, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is regularly recognized as the best festival in Europe, last year it gathered about half a million people from 95 countries of the world! People go to Liberty Island not so much for, but for the atmosphere, which is truly special here. In addition to the main stages, Sziget has a lot of thematic ones designed for a specific target audience - for example, metalheads, clubbers, black music lovers, gays, etc. And besides music, you can find almost anything here - from pottery courses and Falun Dafa followers to bright theatrical performances and film screenings. The infrastructure in the campsite is developed - there are left-luggage offices, stations for recharging the phone and all the necessary amenities. The center of Budapest is 20 minutes by train. A cheap supermarket with alcohol is within easy reach. All this makes Sziget one of the best European festivals.

A large-scale Ukrainian festival with camping on the lake in the picturesque village of Rodatichi near Lviv. This year's Zaxidfest, which usually specializes in heavy acts, will feature, among others, reunited American alternative bands Breaking Benjamin and venerable German folk metallers In Extremo. And yet, perhaps the most titled participant of the fest can be called one of the main post-punk revival bands, the British Editors, on whom a whole generation of indie kids grew up. This summer, the team is announced at top European festivals - the more pleasant it will be.

How many: three-day subscription - 940 hryvnia, one-day ticket - 500 hryvnia, camping - 250 hryvnia.

Rock en Seine

Who: The xx, PJ Harvey, At the Drive In, Franz Ferdinand, Cypress Hill, The Kills, Mac DeMarcom, Flume, Ty Segall, The Pretty Reckless and more

A French camping festival that takes place in the Parc Saint-Cloud in the suburbs of Paris. Among other things, known for the sad end of Oasis - in 2009, the Gallagher brothers, announced at the fest, finally quarreled, did not go on stage and announced the dissolution of the group. Going to the festival this year is worth at least for The xx and PJ Harvey. And, in the end, Rock en Seine is a great way to combine a musical party with walks in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

How many: three-day pass without camping - 119 euros

Lollapalooza Berlin

Where: Berlin, Germany

Who: Foo Fighters, The xx, Mumford & Sons, Westbam, Metronomy, George Erza, Rudimental, Two Doors Cinema Club, Michael Kiwanuka, The Vaccines, Phantogram, Django Django, London Grammar and others

Another young urban festival, which is held under the franchise of the famous American brother. Lollapalooza Berlin wanders from one place to another every year: the year before last, the festival was held in the building of the abandoned Tempelchow Airport, in the past - in Treptow Park in East Berlin (details), this year it will take place at the Rennbahn Hoppegarten hippodrome. A worthy option to end the season!

How many: two-day ticket - 139 euros

Western Europe

Primavera Sound, Barcelona (Spain)

Headliners 2017: Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, The xx, Arcade Fire, Aphex Twin, Solange, Kate Tempest, Grandaddy, Run The Jewels, Skepta.

Prices: 80 euros - 1 day, officially - 195 euros, but only resale tickets worth more than 200 euros are available.

Primavera is one of the most impressive music festivals in Europe. In 2014, 190 thousand people visited it, 292 groups performed on 16 stages. In the 15 years since its founding, Sonic Youth, The White Stripes, Blur, Portishead, Arcade Fire, The XX, Pulp have come to Primavera - and almost all the heroes of modern rock music. No less than the list of participants is pleased that the festival takes place in Barcelona - a city reminiscent of paradise (for more details, see our guide). In 2012, another festival of the same name spun off from Primavera. On June 8-10, NOS Primavera Sound will be held in Porto (Portugal). Here the list of artists is not so big, but also attractive: Bon Iver, Justice, Aphex Twin, Run The Jewels and many others.

How to get there: To Barcelona - a direct flight or with a transfer (Lufthansa, KLM). From the center of Barcelona, the festival can be reached by public transport.

Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, Mending and Nuremberg (Germany)

Headliners 2017: Rammstein, System of a Down, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bastille, Liam Gallagher, Rag'N'Bone Man, Die Toten Hosen.

Prices: 210 euros.

Rock am Ring and Rock im Park are simultaneous and almost identical festivals. The first will take place at the Nürburgring circuit (previously held at the old air base in the city of Mendig) in western Germany, the second - in Nuremberg (Bavaria). Having played at one of the festival brothers, the artists move to another one the next day. Compared to other summer festivals in Europe, Rock am Ring / im Park is heavier and more uncompromising. Pop stars and electronic artists are sometimes miraculously found in the list of participants, but in general the line up justifies the name of the event.

How to get there: If you are heading to Rock am Ring in Mendige, the nearest airports are Frankfurt (we have a guide for this city, by the way) and Cologne. Getting to Nuremberg is even easier. And in the city itself there is an airport, and from Munich a little over an hour by train.

Glastonbury, Pilton (Somerset, England)

Headliners 2017: Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Ed Sheeran, The xx, The National, Katy Perry, Alt-J, Lorde, Solange, Run The Jewels, Anderson .Paak, Major Lazer, Laura Marling, Stormzy.

Prices:£238 + £5 booking fee. Sold out is fast.

Glastonbury is the king of festivals, an event that even those who are not at all interested in music know about. In fact, the festival does not need any additional advertising from our or anyone else's side. From year to year, tickets are sold out instantly, before the announcement of the participants, as soon as they, the tickets, go on sale. It's easy to predict the headliners - whoever reigns at the top of the charts this year will lead the Glastonbury line-up. Legends of pop and rock music are also happy to take part in the festival. So, over the past few years, Kanye West, Florence & The Machine, The Who, Arcade Fire, Metallica, Kasabian, U2, Beyonce, Coldplay, Stevie Wonder have been among the main faces of Glastonbury. Every year the festival gathers about 135 thousand spectators. It could have been more, but it doesn't fit anymore.

How to get there: If you managed to get tickets and are seriously studying how to get there, write to us. We will admire and envy white envy. The nearest decent airport to Glastonbury is Bristol. From Bristol Airport, you will need to take a bus to Bristol Temple Meads station, from where buses run regularly to the festival. If you are flying into London, there is also a special bus to the festival from Heathrow.

Roskilde Festival, Roskilde (Denmark)

Headliners 2017: Foo Fighters, A Tribe Called Quest, Arcade Fire, Justice, Moderat, Solange, The Weeknd, Bonobo, Lorde, Father John Misty.

Prices: 134 euros - 1 day, 268 euros - full ticket.

Roskilde is one of the pioneers of the summer festival movement. It was first held in 1971. They say that everything was terrible with the organization, but the enthusiasm of the creators, inspired by Woodstock, went through the roof. Now, 45 years later, the enthusiasm remains, and they have learned how to organize. Roskilde is the largest music and arts festival in Northern Europe. More than 30 thousand volunteers take part in the event. In the 90s, electronic music was added to the traditionally strong rock scene. It's funny, but true: the festival is famous not only for its rich and stellar music program, but also a very peculiar event - the run of naked people. The fastest naked people get a ticket to next year's festival as a prize.

How to get there: The road from Copenhagen to Roskilde will take half an hour. You will have to fly from Kyiv to Copenhagen with a transfer (a direct flight will appear only in August), there are direct flights from Moscow. A direct train to Roskilde departs every hour from both the airport and Copenhagen Central Station. There are also regular and night buses to Copenhagen. From the center of the town of Roskilde, special buses run regularly to the festival.

Rock Werchter, Werchter (Belgium)
