Country visa information

Latvia is a member of the Schengen countries, therefore, along with national visas Latvia, Latvian consulates also issue Schengen visas. The Latvian national visa is issued by the consulate if the terms of the visa are contrary to the Schengen Agreement (for example, in terms of the length of stay). In all other cases, the Consulate of Latvia draws up and issues Schengen visas. Cases of issuing Latvian national visas by consulates are extremely rare. The same applies to visas issued by the consulates of other Schengen countries.

A Schengen visa issued by the Consulate of Latvia, like any other Schengen visa, is valid on the territory of all Schengen countries. The holder of a Schengen visa can move freely throughout the territory of the Schengen countries.

Entry into the territory of the Schengen countries does not (!) necessarily have to be carried out through the border of the state that issued you the Schengen visa. In accordance with the Schengen Agreement, a visa must be issued at the consulate of the country that is the main purpose of the trip. Only if the main purpose of the trip cannot be determined, then a visa must be issued at the consulate of the Schengen country through which the entry into the territory of the Schengen countries will be carried out (see Schengen Agreement, Chapter 3 "Visas", Article 12, paragraph 2) .

In other words, with a Schengen visa issued by Latvia, you can enter the territory of the Schengen countries through any Schengen country, if Latvia is the main purpose of your trip. Accordingly, having a Schengen visa issued by any Schengen country, you can enter the territory of the Schengen countries through Latvia, if the country that issued your visa is the main purpose of your trip.
