Indie clothing

Indie music for all time

Indie movie night

Why do we buy clothes in different colors and styles? Why do our homes differ from each other in elements and decor? Because in addition to the usefulness and necessity of any thing, we show individuality. We distinguish ourselves in the eyes of others with the help of different accessories, cuts and styles. Indie style was created precisely in order to emphasize the personality of its adherent.

Indie style - independent and active clothes

What is indie style?

The English word Independent is translated as "independent", and from its abbreviated form the name of the indie style came about. It originated in the 70s among English musicians. It all started with the fact that major recording studios did not want to sign contracts with little-known performers who were equally likely to either "shoot" or bring losses to the company. Then indie musicians began to unite with each other and organize their own small labels literally “on their knees”.

As the name implies, indie style in any area of life is characterized by the denial of everything that is status and expensive. A person who lives indie style will not spend the last money on or a smartphone in pursuit of status. He would rather buy jeans on sale, and spend the money saved on a trip to interesting place to hitchhike.

Men's indie fashion

Indie kids are people who are not aging in spirit, whose lifestyle is in many ways similar to culture or boho, but within the framework of modern world. The main features of indie:

  • fondness for old technology such as film cameras, cassette recorders and similar things
  • t-shirts with prints of your favorite bands or ironic inscriptions
  • hats and scarves of all colors and styles
  • skinny jeans in different colors combined with sneakers
  • indie movies and indie music

These t-shirts are perfect for the indie look.

Indie clothing

As already mentioned, indie and clothing styles have a lot in common. Both do not drive their fan into a rigid framework, welcome a creative approach and love old and budget things. Indie kids dress in simple, comfortable clothes that are easy to find in chain stores such as H&M, NewYorker, TopShop, Zara and others.

Skirts are also welcome in indie style
Dresses for urban independent and creative girls

Indie clothing is also characterized by the use of vintage items, especially scarves and classic "grandmother's" scarves. If you have an old knitted shawl, a colorful scarf or a grandfather's felt hat in your wardrobe, do not throw it away, but turn it into an interesting addition to your own image.

Also, indie style is impossible without such a versatile and convenient element of clothing as. It can be a T-shirt with the logo of your favorite music group, an artificially aged pattern, a funny or ironic inscription. Handmade is also highly valued, so you can arm yourself with paints and paint your clothes.

informal indie style

You can throw a loose-fitting shirt over a T-shirt in cool weather, and if you are a girl, borrow a shirt from your other half, and the image of an indie kid is ready.

Shorts, T-shirt and shirt - all indie style

Voluminous, due to an oversized shirt or sweater, the top is balanced by a narrowed bottom. Indie clothing is characterized by tight plain jeans of different colors with or without scuffs and holes, as well as short shorts, also tight.

Indie clothing can be flashy

Sneakers complete the look of the indie kid of both sexes. Rag and denim, plain and patterned, low and high - sneakers are one of the main symbols of indie style, along with a film camera and a vintage hat.

Indie music for all time

With the help of clothes alone, creating a full-fledged indie image will not work, because this is not just a style of clothing, but a state of mind. And what makes our soul happy and sad, fills it with warmth and lights fireworks in it? Of course the music!

The youngest indie performer in Russia Dasha Shvets

One of the most famous musical groups indie style Joy Division- was created in 1976 and set the style and mood for dozens of young indie performers for years to come. The music of Joy Division, in contrast to the explosive punk rock popular at the time, has a pronounced flavor of melancholy and self-destruction. And their song love will Tear Us Apart" is probably familiar to you, because it can still be heard on the radio, it was used in many films, and in 2012 the English music magazine NME awarded it the title of "the greatest song of all time".

Joy Division lasted only 3 years, but left a bright autograph in independent music

All performers of Russian rock from the time of the late USSR can be safely attributed to the genre of indie music. But if some performers became commercialized, while others left the world of music, then the group Aquarium has been faithful to the indie style since its birth in 1972 and still today.

The musicians recorded their early albums at home on an old tape recorder, while modern ones are released at the expense of voluntary donations from fans, which is an excellent confirmation of their love for Boris Grebenshchikov's work. The songs of the Aquarium are not only charming hypnotic music, but also surprisingly deep texts that can be re-read and analyzed separately from the melody, like fables or parables.

Boris Grebenshchikov is called a philosopher, guru, hoaxer and prophet

The next characteristic representative of indie music is the trio Alt-J from Leeds. They got into the list of indie musicians for their bold and extremely successful experiments with sound. Surprisingly organic combination electronic music and ethnic tunes with an African tinge fascinates from the first note. If you don't believe me, try listening to "Fitzplesure".

Indie band Alt-J gained popularity after the release of their first album

radiohead. Another world-famous musical group that remains committed to the indie style. Despite the fact that Thom Yorke is often ironically called "the king of gloom" due to the depressing nature of the lyrics, Radiohead's music has won millions of hearts. This is easy to see by looking at the incredible number of covers and remixes of their hit called "Creep".

Over the 33 years of Radiohead's existence, the style has changed from Britpop to indie

Rounding out the list of the most significant indie musicians is the group R.E.M. Debut album group, recorded literally in the garage, went around the charts of Michael Jackson himself and the Police team. The rise of young musicians was frighteningly rapid. And over time, fears were confirmed. Connoisseurs of indie music noted with chagrin that with the growth of popularity and fees, the music of R.E.M. lost its charm. However, the composition of the heyday of "Everybody Hurts" still evokes a delightful lingering bitter feeling inside.

"Rapid Eye Movement" - medical abbreviation, means "rapid eye movements"

Indie movie night

So, the clothes are selected, the playlist is recorded, it remains only to watch a few independent films of 2017 in order to finally immerse yourself in the indie style.

most prolific and famous director indie cinema

Farm “Mudbound” (Mudbound)

A film of the social drama genre will tell you about two families in almost the same conditions and experiencing the period after the Second World War, and different skin colors give rise to even more problems and conflicts.

Wind River

This tense indie film revolves around the murder of a young woman on an Indian reservation. The case is solved by an FBI agent and a local ranger.

Ghost Story

Such a romantic indie movie is better to watch in an embrace with your other half or a box of chocolates. The plot tells about the ghost of a man who, after his death, returned home and is forced to watch his wife cope with grief and try to move on.

This article is doomed, if only because a good half of the indie bands are not listed here. And some will argue with foam at the mouth that half of the bands are not indies at all, but the notorious alternative. But after all, indie itself has emerged from the alternative, and there is not much difference between the sound. In any case, the musicians themselves cannot find it. Indie was synonymous with alternative and was used to differentiate artists by geography, with alternative rock favored by American artists and indie rock favored by British artists. But over the years, things got mixed up.

The very range of indie music is so wide that everything is lumped under the brush. If Nadezhda Kadysheva recorded on independent labels and added more drums and guitar to her sound, she could also be considered an indie folk singer. Anyone who writes original music automatically becomes an indie musician.

An indie musician should record on independent labels, but in our time, even this once fundamental fact has ceased to be taken into account. So don't be surprised by the presence of some bands on this list. We chose solely for the sound and quality of the music. We hope you agree with us. Sorry that Kasabian, Oasis, Imagine Dragons, OK Go, Florence and the Machine and Two Door Cinema Club are not here. We will write about them, but a little later, just in our hit parade there is only a place for ten.

1.Beirut

It is very difficult to characterize their music. Of course, this is indie folk, but it is impossible to say what musical tradition can be traced in their work. The group itself is from the shabby, Hispanic-populated more than half of the state of New Mexico. Consider that this is Mexico, the real one, with deserts, cacti, Spanish speech, traditional solemn trumpets and sultry mariachis. Then the thirst for travel led vocalist Zach Condon to Europe, where he was imbued with Balkan brass music and gypsy folklore. So the group got signature rhythms and recognizable wind instruments. And then Condon visited French Brittany, and the notes characteristic of French chanson appeared in the songs. Now mix all these musical traditions, add a pinch of ukulele, Condon's characteristic "cat" vocals, and you get a dish called Beirut.

All their creativity is like big Adventure, from city to city, from country to country. Because the music is always different, but with recognizable Beirut features. You can't confuse them with anyone. Their songs can be compared to cumulus clouds: they are just as airy and unreal. Highly recommended for those who love good brass, great music and suffer from travel cravings.

2. Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco is a total "magical" guy, with very strange relaxing music, very strange looks to life and a wide gap between the upper front teeth. But as soon as he sings or throws a branded "leaky" smile, you are thoroughly saturated with his charm, and the music and soulful vocals begin to act on you like a drug attack. Even hysterical gashes on a homemade electric guitar do not spoil the impression, on the contrary, they add zest to the sound. There is something from surf rock in his compositions, something from the Doors - a little bit of everything, but at the same time it is difficult to confuse his music with something else, like a gap-toothed smile. In what genre DeMarco plays, DeMarco himself does not know. And what do critics do when a musician plays original music and is not comparable to Kanye West in terms of fame? It is classified as indie. They did the same with Mac.

But the main highlight of his songs is humor. So, recently the Canadian posted an instrumental album, recorded by him in just 4 days, consisting of the songs "Little Pepper", "Onion Guy", "Young Coconut" - these and other songs, according to Mack, are the perfect soundtrack for a barbecue.
And Mac finishes off with his always extravagant clips. Look how pretty the lady turned out.

3. Chad Van Gaalen

There is no greater joy than adding Chad Van Gaalen. This very well-mannered and absolutely adequate young man makes very strange music, which is not understandable to everyone. But if you like the work of Vangaalen, you will not be able to tear yourself away, but you will become a slave to his songs and you will listen to them every single day until the songs get tired of it.
And Chad is also an artist, his, as they say, "drug" drawings and animation raise almost more questions than songs. However, evil magic does not allow you to break away from the amazing "arts" of the Canadian, they are painfully strange and attractive.

Van Gaalen also managed to compose an infernal indie anthem, which was covered by everyone who could. It's about the song "Molten Light". Simple in its structure, it captivates with a demonic accordion, disturbing chords and a clip drawn by the author. The first impression after watching was that you were chewed and spit out by Satan. But it was worth it.

4. Smiths

Let's devote a little time to the founding fathers, since many are sure that if it weren't for the Smiths, there would be no indie pop in the usual sense. And it's not even about Morissey's poetry, which was feverish and tossed from lofty metaphors like "tea with the taste of the Thames" to frank snot: "If a double-decker bus crashes into us ... Oh, what a wonderful way to die!" It's all about the laconic, catchy guitar parts of Johnny Marr, who managed to create a really exciting underground pop sound. The band disbanded in 1986, but their music is still loved today. Marr and Morissey continue to work in the genre, but separately, however, Morissey's anguished lamentations sell better. Probably because the voice has become more courageous, and the poetry is stronger.

Marilyn Manson wrote in his book that if you love the Smiths, then you are definitely gay. In principle, many have said this, but do not listen to them and get acquainted with the work of both the Smiths and Morissey with Mar, if for some reason you do not know what they are talking about.

5.Pixies

The world is divided between those who classify Pixies as an alternative and those who classify them as indie. Given that the line between these genres is very, very thin, we felt that the Pixies well deserved a place on this list, especially since they made a huge contribution to the development of the genre, generating a bunch of followers behind them, for whom they do not want to say thank you. They worked in those distant times when indie rock was the music of outcasts, and not the anthem of aggressively progressive youth. And it is not surprising that they gained their cult status after the breakup in the 90s. David Bowie said that this is one of the most underrated bands in the history of music. And this becomes clear when, after a bunch of great songs, after a reunion, after getting into the hipster record library to the question: “Do you know the Pixies?” - they answer you: "Ah, these are the ones who wrote the soundtrack for fight club." It's a pity. They should be listened to at least because of the surreal lyrics about mental illness and physical defects, UFOs, insects and endless allusions to avant-garde works.

6. Gotye

In 2011, Australian singer of Belgian origin Wouter de Becker wrote a song that sounded from every teapot for a whole year. It sounded from phones and cars, from radios and TVs, even from irons! She was terribly tired of everyone, but could not stop liking her. We are talking about the song "Somebody that I used to know". Perhaps this is the last this moment a hit that would appeal to people who profess different musical preferences: rockers, rappers, and even boys said that the song was clear. Of course, after such a composition it was difficult to write something stronger. So far, Gauthier has not succeeded, but nothing, let's wait. In the meantime, we are waiting, we advise you to get acquainted with his other work, fortunately, there are a lot of interesting songs in it, like worms in black soil after rain. Mostly indie pop, but very high quality indie pop. By the way, "Somebody that I used to know" also belongs to this genre. Multi-instrumentalist Gauthier recorded some compositions without the help of outside musicians, so it's definitely worth listening to.

7. Killers

It feels like the Killers are at least 30 years old, and it's time for them to give anniversary concert. In fact, they are only 13, at this age they don’t even issue a passport. But despite this, they have a very mature indie with which they won the hearts of millions of fans around the world. Sometimes it seems that there is nothing special in their music, especially since initially the guys tried to mow under Oasis and Duran Duran. But it turned out that each of their albums has its own distinctive and recognizable character, which distinguishes them from many other groups that have sunk into the thickness of musical triviality. Flowers' screaming vocals, confident guitars and branded presentation captivate. It would seem that you can come up with something new for 13 years of work in one team? And they succeed.

Some argue that if you don't have money to go to a Killers concert, you can wait until the Latvians from Brainstorm come to your city, they are too similar, even in vocals. But interestingly, the Latvian band appeared earlier. So who's the plagiarizer here?

8. Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The first album, released in 2003, became one of the best-selling albums in the world and sold 750,000 copies. Well, after him, the released single “Maps” became a real hit on the air of alternative radio. As for the band's sound itself, there's a classic hodgepodge of retro, synthetic, punk and blues, as well as screaming, all of which have created a rather unique sound that hasn't appeared in music industry still. Let them continue to shout, we call this cry a song.

9 Arctic Monkeys

The heart feels that if there are no “Arctic monkeys” on this list, the article will be torn to shreds. Here you are, arctic monkeys. One of those bands that showed how you can make indie rock commercially successful without entering into contracts with famous labels and preserving the traditions of the original indie, when the musicians sang in lousy clubs and made music for their own pleasure. In addition, the Arctic Monkeys were one of the first bands to achieve great success without traditional media support. Their music is distributed through the Internet. Pretty good way to revive traditions.

They appeared just when indie was just gaining momentum in old Britain. Vocals, two regular and one bass guitarists and a drummer have created a group that is leading in modern British and world charts. unexpected success the group brought the first album, released in 2006. And their first single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" became a worldwide hit.

10. Foster the People

In fact, the group was originally called: "Foster & the people", and everything was logical. Keyboardist and vocalist Mark Foster gathered around him some people with musical instruments in hand. But the people stubbornly did not notice and, as a result, the group, under the onslaught of fan love, gave up and shortened the name to the familiar and a little more concise Foster the People. In 6 years they have turned into indie gods, they are loved by girls all over the world and almost as many boys. "Pumped-Up Kicks" took the band to the top of the universe, and since then the guys have not lost momentum. What will happen next? Wait and see.

Where did you play: Metric, Broken Social Scene, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton

Genres: indie rock, new wave, synthpop

What's cool: Sopranist Emily takes the soul with the artistry of her songs - you don't hear that often. Each line corresponds to its own emotion, and Hines vocalizes them. Of the bands in which she played / plays, the most interesting is Metric. The guys participated in writing the soundtrack for the excellent relaxing film "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" (Scott's ex, Envy Adams, sang in the voice of Emily Hines), and in addition (perhaps more importantly), collaborated with Lou Reed.

Quote: Most of all, I am proud of our first concerts, when 15 people listened to us in a random bar, who did not understand anything about music. It's probably hard for people to imagine that these were really the hardest concerts in our history. I performed with Lou Reed, I performed in front of tens of thousands of people, I performed for a queen, but nothing was harder than having to play in front of those 15 people, one of whom is a bar owner.

Kazu Makino

Photo - Apiece Apart →

Where did you play: blonde redhead

Genres: indie rock, alternative rock, noise rock

What's cool: Kazu is the frontwoman of perhaps one of the most inventive indie rock bands in a couple of decades. Despite the fact that she still has stage fright, music is the most important thing in her life. A few years ago, Kazu fell off her horse (she loves horseback riding), and the horse severely mutilated her face, forcing her to perform complex operations, after which Kazu walked with her mouth partially sewn up for some time. And the only thing Makino worried about during that period were concerts. She asked Amedeo (the second vocalist of the group) to sing her songs or play them at concerts as instrumentals, if only the performances would still take place. Kazu has a very unusual voice; however, "unusual" is Blonde Redhead entirely in one word.

Quote: When I think that we could do better and better, I don't know if I blame myself or if I don't worry at all. When we play festivals with giants like Muse, I think about how they always knew what they wanted and went for it. I have to compare us and them, and I think, “Wow, I wonder if I had the same confidence in my own desires, what would come of it?” But I just hope that we can be better than WE are; I don't want us to be like Muse.

Alison Mosshart

Where did you play: The Kills, The Dead Weather

Genres: indie rock, blues rock

What's cool: In 2000, Alison, along with guitarist Jamie Hynes, founded The group Kills, in which he has the alias VV. Nine years later, she joined The Dead Weather, formed by Jack White. There her pseudonym is Baby Ruthless. In addition, Mosshart featured on the singles Primal Scream (Dolls) and Placebo (Meds). She almost became related to the Osbourne family: her brother, Matthew Mosshart, was in a relationship with Kelly Osbourne for a long time and was even engaged to her, but in January 2014 the couple broke up. Received the NME Awards in the category "Sexiest Woman".

Quote: Art is both life and death: it doesn't matter what comes first.

Natasha Khan

Photo - NPR →

Where did you play: Bat For Lashes

Genres: indie, dream pop

What's cool: Natasha Khan was born to a Pakistani father and an English mother. Due to her origin and appearance, the girl was often offended at school, so she increasingly skipped school and devoted time to music lessons. And it did her good. The singer's work has been compared to the work of Susie Sue, Björk, Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Annie Lenox and Tori Amos. The debut album Bat For Lashes (stage name Khan) Fur and Gold was certified silver, and the second - Two Suns - went gold. The girl was repeatedly nominated for the Mercury Prize. Natasha collaborated with Beck and Damon Albarn. In 2015, she launched the Sexwitch project, in which the Toy group took part. The team released an album of the same name, which included cover versions of the national songs of Iran, Morocco, Thailand and the United States.

Quote: I cry a lot when I empathize. Sometimes I feel like life breaks my heart, and I can easily burst into tears, even for no specific reason. I think it's even useful.

Karen Oh

Photo - Electronic Beats →

Where did you play: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, solo career

Genres: indie rock, dance-punk, post-punk revival

What's cool: Karen Lee Orzolek, better known as Karen Oh, was born in North Korea, where her mother is from. The girl's father is Polish. Shortly after Karen's birth, the family moved to New Jersey. The singer is known for her extravagant style and love for unusual clothes, most of which are sewn for her by Christian Joy. O was repeatedly nominated and received awards from various magazines as the most "hot" girl in the rock industry. But she refused to shoot for the cover of Playboy, saying that she did not like the audience of the publication. Now Karen has five albums in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and one solo LP. And she is clearly not going to stop there, because "dance dance 'till you dead", as sung in the famous song of her group Heads Will Roll.

Quote: When you work in musical environment almost non-stop, the hardest part is deciding what to do in your free time. You have to force yourself to take a vacation.

Indie rock originated in the 1980s in the UK and the US. In those years, punk went out of fashion, and the record labels that had been publishing it for years turned out to be irrelevant and went underground. Such studios began to be called independent, that is, indie. However, part of the music market in those days belonged to major music labels, which published only artists of commercial value. Over time, indie studios began to appear everywhere, and unformatted young artists had practically no problems with the release of albums. You could always contact one of the indie studios that were happy to take on the release of an alternative one. However, there was one serious drawback - independent studios did not pursue the profit and commercial success of their wards. The maximum that they could count on was several dozen discs recorded by the performers themselves.

In the 80s of the last century, a whole galaxy of young musicians formed, whose music was called college rock. These bands played post-rock, noise-rock, shoegazing and other non-format music. Of these groups, such groups as The Smiths, Pixies, R.E.M. later became very popular. and New Order. The compositions of these performers sounded on low-budget radio stations, and the bulk of the listeners were friends and classmates.

However, over time, bands that played in the underground found their way into the mainstream. Bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Offspring became the epitome of the new wave of punk, while Oasis became a cult group in the British Isles. The breakthrough of these musical groups turned everything upside down. All the bands that a few years ago belonged to the indie style have ceased to be. Only those who did not want to cooperate with big labels and refused to show clips on music TV channels began to rank as indie rock performers.

What bands can now be attributed to indie rock?

Indie rock can be classified as individual groups that openly emphasize their independence from the surrounding styles. These are bands that play the music they like. Often referred to as indie rock performers The White Sptripes, The Strokes, The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys. However, the popularity of these groups, the number of albums sold and released clips refute these allegations.

Now indie rock is a little-known bands that are not chasing money and fame. These are performers who are content with rare performances in clubs and bars. These bands play music for their own pleasure and don't promote themselves to the masses.

These guys wear vintage band T-shirts, worn Vans sneakers, and their humor is full of sarcasm. They listen to songs on their iPods by bands you've never even heard of, often sit in cafes, drink coffee and read the classics. In this article, you will learn how to live indie style.

Steps

Part 1

Appearance

Wear tight jeans. This applies to both boys and girls. Jeans in black or of blue color suit everyone. If the jeans are torn or frayed, great, let this detail be part of your style.

Checkered or striped clothing. Don't be afraid of patterns, but only favor simple patterns. Horizontal stripes, especially the classic black and white stripes, are very popular in the indie subculture. By the way, representatives of the style of indie culture always have things from flannel in their wardrobes.

    • Don't be afraid to combine different types patterns and wear flannel shirts over striped t-shirts.
    • Don't tuck in your clothes, choose clothes that fit you loosely. Roll up the sleeves of your shirt or T-shirt.
  1. Avoid malls. The name "indie" (indie) comes from English word"independent" which means "independent" and if you want to be unique then you should avoid malls. Buy things in small shops or even in second-hand shops - this way you will find really unique things that only you will have.

Shoe search. The most common shoe option for guys and girls are boots: not cowboy boots, but the most ordinary boots or lace-up boots in black or Brown. They look great with skinny jeans or a floral dress.

Tie a scarf. Crawl into grandma and grandpa's closet and you're sure to find something interesting there, like a big scarf. Wear it around your neck once or twice, and leave the rest of the scarf hanging down.

Complete the look with vintage jewelry. You can find some suitable jewelry in a vintage store. Try to find long metal chains with pendants, wear leather or metal bracelets. This is equally suitable for both boys and girls.

    • Guys can also use accessories like suspenders and bow ties.
  2. Put on a leather jacket on top. Leather jackets will never go out of style. A leather jacket will give the impression of a tough, independent person, a rocker. Opt for a plain black leather jacket and don't worry if it's a little frayed and worn.

Buy a pair of glasses. Glasses really make a difference appearance person. Today, people who wear glasses are no longer considered nerds, today glasses are an object of high fashion. Buy large glasses with thick dark frames.

    • You don't wear glasses? No problem, you can still buy regular glasses and wear them just for style.
    • Buy trendy sunglasses. You can buy classic aviators or something new from brands like Gentle Monster or something more affordable like Quay Australia. 70s company Sun Pocket has today brought back foldable sunglasses to the market that can be the perfect blend of vintage and contemporary styles Moreover, these glasses are very convenient to fold and put in your pocket.
  3. Grow your facial hair. Not only hipsters go with a beard and mustache, but also indies. Guys can experiment with facial hair, the only thing you should not do is walk around with a perfectly trimmed beard.

    • Try growing a long, tapered beard.
    • Experiment with mustaches: buy special wax, grow a long mustache.
  4. Get yourself a tattoo. This is one of the most popular ways to stand out and be original. Design your tattoo yourself, choose something that will mean something special to you. Try not to choose a tattoo from a catalog or from posters in a tattoo parlor.

    • You can get a tattoo of an animal that you associate yourself with.
    • Draw something yourself and ask the artist to use this drawing.
    • Make a tattoo in those places where it will be visible, because you are unlikely to want the tattoo to be covered all the time. You can wear it on your arm or shoulder so you can show it off if you need to.
    • You must be over 18 years of age to get a tattoo, otherwise you will need parental permission. You can only get a tattoo while sober.
  5. Hang out in coffee shops. Independent people do what they like. They do not sit in the office or in the library, but prefer to work at an old wooden table with a cup of coffee or read a book in an old chair in the very corner of a cozy coffee shop.

Ride your bike. Do not drive or public transport and move around the city by bike. A bike can also say a lot about you. Decorate your bike with stickers and accessories like a basket and a bell.

    • Don't worry about a helmet ruining your stylish look - you'll look great, but more importantly, be safe.
  6. Be yourself. Despite all these recommendations for indie style, the most important thing is independence. Stay true to yourself and your own individuality. You make yourself and that will be the most important step towards the indie lifestyle.
