The critic regarded Katya's suicide as a senseless act that did not change anything. Instead of alleviating suffering for herself or others, Katya rushes into the Volga. From this angle, Katerina appears to be a victim of herself; a weak girl who does not see other ways to solve problems.

The opinions of critics are largely opposite. To choose what Katya's death actually is is a personal matter for each person.
