In Pyeongchang, South Korea, the XXIII Winter Olympic Games came to an end, during which a record 102 sets of medals in 15 disciplines were played.
The awards were won by athletes from 30 countries, and the athletes of the Russian Olympic team, as our team was called at these Games, took 13th place in the overall medal standings.
Last December, the IOC suspended the Russian Federation from participating in the Olympics, but allowed a number of our athletes to compete under a neutral flag. During the closing ceremony, as was the case at the opening of the 2018 Olympics, our athletes were not allowed to walk under the national tricolor.
How many medals does Russia have at the 2018 Olympics?
As a result of the 2018 Olympics, Russian athletes won 17 awards - two gold, six silver and nine bronze medals.

Our athletes have 17 awards. Two of them of the highest denomination - gold, were brought to the country by the figure skater Alina Zagitova, who was called the most opening of the season, because the girl managed to outdo even the famous Evgenia Medvedev in the technique of performing numbers. Silver was won by: skiers Andrei Larkov, Alexander Bolshunov, Alexei Chervotkin and Denis Spitsov (4x10 km relay), Bolshunov in the 50 km race, Spitsov and Bolshunov in the team sprint, figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva (single women's skating), the Russian national figure skating team in team competitions (Medvedeva and Zagitova, Mikhail Kolyada, Evgenia Tarasova/Vladimir Morozov, Natalia Zabiyako/Alexander Enbert, Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitry Solovyov), skeletonist Nikita Tregubov.
There are nine bronze awards in the country's piggy bank.
Bronze medalists were: skiers Natalya Nepryaeva, Yulia Belorukova, Anastasia Sedova, Anna Nechaevskaya (4x5 km relay), Belorukova (individual sprint), Spitsov (15 km individual race), Larkov (50 km race), Bolshunov (individual sprint) , freestylers Ilya Burov (ski acrobatics) and Sergey Ridzik (ski-cross), speed skater Natalya Voronina (5000 meters), short track skater Semyon Elistratov (1500 meters).
The IOC issued an official statement that the medals would not be given to Russia as such - they all belong to athletes from Russia, and the country's participation in the Olympics will not go down in history in any way.
The first place in terms of the number and value of awards was undoubtedly taken by athletes from Norway. The guys took home 14 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals. In second place was Germany - here the number of medals is 14-10-7, respectively. In third place was Canada with medals in a ratio of 11-8-10.
The top ten most “awarded” countries also included athletes from the USA, the Netherlands, Sweden, South Korea, Switzerland, France, and Austria. By the way, in terms of the number of awards, the Russians caught up with the seventh-place winners, Korea, but the hosts of the Olympics had much more gold medals.
Almost half of the Russian medals - eight out of 17 - were won by skiers. On Saturday, February 24, Alexander Bolshunov and Andrey Larkov became silver and bronze medalists in the marathon. Prior to that, Denis Spitsov won bronze in the individual freestyle race, Bolshunov took bronze in the individual sprint classic style. Both won silver in the team sprint, and in the company with Larkov and Alexei Chervotkin, a similar medal in the relay. Russian Yulia Belorukova won bronze in the individual sprint in the classical style, as well as the women's relay team (Natalya Nepryaeva, Yulia Belorukova, Anastasia Sedova, Anna Nechaevskaya).

Several athletes during the Olympics were caught doping. Among them are two Russians. Traces of meldonium were found in the body of curling player Alexander Krushelnitsky. The athlete rejected the fact of the deliberate use of doping, but also refused to fight for justice. As a result, Krushelnitsy parted with the bronze medal, which he won with his wife Anastasia Bryzgalova in the double mixed double. A total of 29 awards: 8 gold, 11 silver, 10 bronze.

There are 42 medals in total: 10 gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze.
For the first time since 1976, the French won the team dressage (equestrian sport). An interesting story is connected with this victory: one of the finalists, Philippe Rozier, is the son of Marcel Rozier, who was the Olympic champion in the French team of the same sport just in 1976.
6. Japan
There are 41 awards in total: 12 gold, 8 silver and 21 bronze.
The sixth place in the medal top 10 was taken by Japanese athletes. And the governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, received the flag of the Olympic Games, because the Japanese capital will host the 2020 games.
5. Germany
There are 42 medals in total: 17 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze.
Russia's long-standing rivals in sports could not beat our athletes in terms of the total number of medals. The highest awards, in particular, were won by canoeist Sebastian Brendel, in the 1000 meters in singles and doubles, and kayakers Max Rendschmidt and Markus Gross, in the 1000 meters in doubles and in fours.
4. Russia
A total of 56 awards, including 19 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze.
A very pleasant surprise was the gold medal of our handball players, who managed to beat the Norwegians, who were considered favorites, and defeated the strongest team of France in the final match.
