1917-1922
The National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture is the successor of the Ukrainian Academy of Art, which was founded in 1917 in Kyiv by the Constituent Commission headed by G. Pavlutsky.

In August 1919, after the capture of Kyiv by Denikin's Volunteer Army, the Ukrainian Academy of Arts was included in the category of private educational institutions not funded by the authorities. 1922-1934
In 1922, by order of the Provincial Department vocational education under the People's Commissariat of Education, the Academy was reorganized into the Kyiv Institute of Plastic Arts. In 1924, the Ukrainian Institute of Architecture, which had existed since 1918, was attached to it as a faculty. The newly formed university was called Kyiv art institute. The institute was housed in the building of the former Kyiv Theological Seminary, where it is located to this day. Ivan Ivanovich Vron was appointed its rector.

The structure of the educational institution was also defined in a new way. It became aimed mainly at training artists "for the harmonious formation of the environment, life, production." So, at the painting faculty, in addition to the departments of easel and monumental arts and, a new one has opened - thea-cinema-photo. At the Faculty of Sculpture, along with monumental and easel sculpture, artistic processing of wood and ceramics were mastered. 1934-1992
In 1934, after a radical reform of the institution, the university received a new name - the All-Ukrainian Art Institute. Benkovich was appointed its rector. In the late 1930s, the Kyiv State Art Institute returned to academic methods of education. Due to the reorganization, priority was given to easel forms. For a long time, easel art became the basis of the teaching methodology, which consisted in carefully studying nature by means of drawing and painting and gradually increasing the complexity of exercises in order to prepare the student to perform a plot-thematic composition in one or another area of ​​fine arts.

The National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture is the successor of the Ukrainian Academy of Art, founded on December 18, 1917.

The main goal of the first higher art educational institution in Ukraine was to educate an art school on the basis of the traditions of national and world culture.

With the opening of the Academy for gifted Ukrainian youth, it became possible to get higher education not within Ukraine, but in their homeland. The Academy laid the foundations for the formation and development of the latest domestic pedagogy in the field of fine arts, leading masters were invited to teach, including the founders of the Academy M. Boychuk, M. Zhuk, V. Krichevsky, F. Krichevsky, A. Manevich, A. Murashko , G. Narbut.

The first rectors of the Academy were such outstanding artists - teachers as F. Krichevsky, G. Narbut, I. Vrono and others.

The new educational institution with a small faculty, a small number of students and a limited number of special disciplines (painting and graphics) was to a certain extent similar to foreign free academies. The first years of its functioning were not easy trials - civil war and intervention, the lack of its own permanent premises and necessary equipment. However, despite unfavourable conditions, the Academy has completed one of the main tasks - the beginning of the foundations of the higher art school in Ukraine. In a short time, G. Narbut brought up a galaxy of graphics, which, continuing the traditions of the teacher, made a significant contribution to the formation of the national style of the book - new graphics.

At this time, the foundations of the school of monumental painting by M. Boychuk were determined. 1922 The Academy was reorganized into the Institute of Plastic Arts, which in 1924 was merged with the Ukrainian Architectural Institute (founded in 1918) and the educational institution was again called the Kyiv Art Institute. As of October 1, 1928, over 800 students studied at the institute under the guidance of 103 teachers and support staff. The emergence of various artistic movements, associations, groupings, internecine struggle for hegemony in art, increased ideological pressure nullified all achievements.

Easel painting for a long time became the basis of the teaching methodology, which consisted in a thorough study of nature by means of drawing and painting and the gradual complication of exercises in order to prepare the student for independent implementation of the plot-thematic composition in a particular area of ​​fine arts. On the basis of the traditional methodology, which ensured high professionalism, more than one generation of Ukrainian artists was brought up. However, with a certain constancy of the academic programs that were developed and approved by the Academy of Arts of the USSR, certain adjustments and changes were made to them in the learning process. They are due to the influx of new teaching staff, aesthetic trends. However, despite the fundamental changes in the teaching staff, clashes and unhealthy relationships between individual teachers, disputes with government officials did not subside. The repressions of 1937 cost the lives of a number of prominent artists. First of all, the school of M. Boychuk suffered, which was destroyed both morally and physically.

But despite all the destructive phenomena, the idea of ​​a national school continued to live. It was largely supported by the authority of F. Krichevsky. In the pre-war years, he trained many students, who later took a significant place in Ukrainian artistic culture. During the second half of the 1930s, strong foundations were formed for academic higher education, the traditions of which still form the basis of the pedagogical system. Started by outstanding masters, they survived during the years of war hard times, when the Institute was in evacuation, and served as a solid basis for the education of more than one generation of artists in subsequent times. In the first post-war decades, the releases of artists were carried out, whose work significantly strengthened the position of the realistic school, laid down in the 30s. This is the merit of the then heads of creative workshops M. Gelman, V. Kasiyan, N. Lysenko, A. Petritsky, G. Svetlitsky, K. Trokhimenko, A. Shovkunenko, I. Shtilman. Many theses of those years became a real property of Ukrainian fine arts.

In the post-war years, the institute expanded significantly, in particular, the number of structural divisions increased. The formation of the spiritual worldview of future artists through the development of humanitarian, socio-economic, historical knowledge is provided by the general academic department of culture and socio-humanitarian disciplines, headed by Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Kiselev.

The level of training of artistic personnel is also growing in the Crimean branch of the academy, it is graduating bachelors in painting and design. Here at the Department of Fine Arts work famous artists- Honored Artist of Ukraine L. Balkind, Honored Artist of Ukraine M. Dudchenko, Honored Artist of Ukraine V. Golinskiy and others.

In order to train scientific and pedagogical personnel of the highest qualification in the field of fine arts and architecture and to replenish the teaching staff with creatively gifted youth, the academy operates postgraduate studies and assistantships - internships. Success in the training of artistic and scientific and pedagogical personnel depends not only on the qualifications of teachers, scientific and methodological achievements of the departments, but also to a certain extent determined by the activities of other divisions of the Academy, in particular the library, educational and methodological laboratories, scientific and methodological exhibition hall etc. .

The results of research and scientific-methodical works on issues of art education, history of fine arts, theory and history of architecture, restoration of cultural monuments are published in the academic yearbook “Ukrainian Academy of Art. Research and scientific - methodical work.

The Academy maintains extensive international relations with higher art schools different countries peace.

Academy lecturers often undergo training abroad, participate in international scientific conferences and present their creative achievements at exhibitions.

Students adequately represent their educational institution at foreign exhibitions. A considerable contingent of citizens from different countries of the world studies at the academy, in particular the People's Republic of China, with whose educational institutions the academy closely cooperates. Historic achievements and state of the art of the leading art institution of Ukraine confirm that in all parameters of its activity it fully corresponds to the status of the academy and is a higher educational institution of the IV level of accreditation. The total number of students is over 1000.

More than 160 teachers work at 14 departments. Among them: 21 - academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture, 11 laureates of the National Prize of Ukraine. Taras Shevchenko and the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of architecture, 39 doctors of science and professors, 71 candidates of science and associate professors, 63 teachers were awarded high honorary titles, including 11 people's artist of Ukraine, 2 people's architect of Ukraine.

Postgraduate studies provide training in the following specialties:

To ensure the successful functioning of postgraduate studies in the system of the academy, a specialized council for the defense of master's theses works in the following specialties: 17.00.05 Fine Arts; 18.00.01 Theory of architecture, restoration of architectural monuments.

For the period of postgraduate studies, starting from 1992 (in accordance with the order of the USSR State Committee for public education, No. 362 dated 31.07. 1991), 64 graduate students were trained, 27 dissertations were defended.

The international activities of NAIIA are carried out in the following areas:
- Training of specialists in the field of art and scientific personnel for foreign countries
- Participation of students in international creative competitions and exhibitions;
- Student exchange for continuing education and creative practice;
- Training of teachers of the academy in similar educational institutions in other countries and involvement of teachers from abroad in the educational process at the academy;
- Participation of teachers of the academy in international scientific conferences and creative exhibitions.

Now the academy actively continues to develop creative ties with art educational institutions in many countries of Europe and other continents: Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Poland, Finland, France, China, the USA.

The contingent of foreign students is increasing every year. Students from China, Germany, Pakistan, the USA, Finland and other countries study at different faculties.

December 19, 2013 at the National Museum of Literature on the initiative of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Ukraine, the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture opened art exhibition dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov. Now his name belongs to world culture, because the writer's work is philosophical reflection universal ideals. “Whatever I write, which heroes, images, plots did not arise before me in the process of creativity, all this is dictated by my faith in the triumph of the human spirit, mind, the belief that a person is obliged to turn moral and spiritual energy into the energy of active choice, historical optimism, peace, then she will win.

These words define the position of Chingiz Aitmatov - a citizen, writer, diplomat, politician.

The exposition of the exhibition included works by such famous Ukrainian artists as Andrey Chebykin - "Petals of Baikonur" (Dedication to Ch. Aitmatov) and "Earth" from the "Planets" cycle, made in 1976 under the impression of Aitmatov's work "And the day lasts longer than a century » ; Vasily Perevalsky - "Portrait of Ch. Aitmatov", made in the technique of engraving; Nikolay Titov, Konstantin Chernyavsky and Nikolai Kochubey - paintings and graphic sheets with reproduction of the fantastic nature of Kyrgyzstan; Ostap Kovalchuk - "Portrait of Ch. Aitmatov", triptych "Kyrgyzstan").

Students Alexander Stupak and Anna Sheveleva exhibited paintings directly painted in the open air during a creative trip to Kyrgyzstan, which took place with the assistance of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic in Ukraine. Their colleague photo-artist Oleg Dregalo showed photographs with panoramic landscapes and scenes from the life of the people of this wonderful country. Students and assistants - trainees of the graphic faculty of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture under the guidance of the head of the department of graphic arts Vasily Perevalsky completed and submitted to the exhibition a number of illustrations for the works of Chingiz Aitmatov. Acquaintance with the works of Chingiz Aitmatov contributed to the meeting held by the Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic Ulukbek Chinaliev with students and teachers of the academy and the smallest participants in this exhibition - students of the Kyiv Children's Academy of Arts. The rector of this academy, academician of NAIU, People's Artist of Ukraine, Professor Mikhail Chemberzhi paid much attention to preparing students for this exhibition.

At the opening of the exhibition were present and spoke: Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic Ulukbek Chinaliev, rector of NAOMA A. Chebykin, rector of the Kyiv Children's Academy of Arts M. Chemberzhi, director National Museum Literature Galina Soroka, Professor Vasily Perevalsky, Vice-Rector of the Academy Ostap Kovalchuk, Executive Secretary of the National Union of Artists Konstantin Chernyavsky, director Viktor Shkurin.

In November, the All-Ukrainian Art Exhibition dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the birth of Chingiz Aitmatov was exhibited at the Central House of Artists of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.

The exhibition is designed to promote the popularization of the creative heritage of the outstanding Kyrgyz writer - humanist and enrich Ukrainian fine arts with new themes, strengthen friendship and cultural ties between the peoples of Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine and the overall development of the cultural space of the CIS.
