Prologue

The city outskirts were plunged into the darkness of night. Here, in a block consisting entirely of numerous warehouses, no expense was spent on night lighting.

Suddenly the darkness was broken by a bright beam of headlights, and a nondescript gray flyer landed near one of the outer buildings. However, the headlights immediately went out, and the car became almost invisible in the dense shadow of the three-story warehouse building.

The driver's door opened silently, releasing a tall, well-built man in an expensive suit from the flyer. Pulling out a sphere of tanirium, the most reliable portal, from his pocket, he looked around nervously. And, noting with satisfaction that the surrounding area was empty, he quickly walked towards the vacant lot visible behind the warehouse, which marked the border of the city.

Of course, the likelihood that someone would track the movement is negligible, but the man couldn’t risk even that. The place where we had to go was too specific. Having crossed the border of the city property, he looked around again and activated the sphere.

A moment, two, three, and a familiar heat breathed into the man’s face. Literally a couple of steps away from him was the shining strip of the Shield, separating the safe world from the desert inhabited by the creatures of Chaos.

Only a madman or someone wishing for his own death would try to cross to the other side. And even then, I couldn’t have done this without permission. However, the man who was not afraid to appear here was neither crazy nor suicidal. But he, on the contrary, had permission.

Coming close to the shining barrier, the man put his palms to the Shield. And he, slowly bending under the pressure of power and spell, allowed the person to move into the world of raging sand whirlwinds and storms.

Immediately, from all sides, Shadows rushed towards the living prey, which had so recklessly brought itself to the place of death. But the man did not flinch. Raising his hand, he showed the creatures of Chaos a black crystal, from which a dull crimson glow radiated. And the Shadows instantly recoiled in different directions.

The man squeezed the crystal in his hand and whispered:

- Lord.

And again he found himself in a whirlwind of a portal, which took him to a rocky plateau, illuminated by a huge crimson moon.

On a wide, flat platform, twenty figures wrapped in dark robes stood in a semicircle. Their faces were hidden by deep hoods, but their height was too tall for ordinary people and their visible ash-gray hands with black claws betrayed their inhuman nature.

They all watched the process taking place in the center... yes, without a doubt, execution.

On the rocky ground, the same creature, wrapped in a robe, writhed. True, he was thoroughly covered in dust, and the hood flew off his head, revealing a gray hairless skull with gouged out holes in the eye sockets.

Above him, with a clawed hand extended, towered a tall, thin figure, shrouded in a haze of swirling power. The tormentor's face resembled a bone, coal-black mask. He watched the victim’s suffering with obvious pleasure, as if absorbing her horror and pain.

The man swallowed nervously at the terrible sight.

“You’re on time,” the tormentor greeted, distracted from the creature lying at his feet. - Now I’ll finish my business and take care of you.

“Yes, Lord of Chaos,” the man breathed, unable to take his eyes off what was happening.

And the smoky figure returned to torture. A short wave of his hand, and the creature immediately began to thrash in agony, screaming heart-rendingly:

- Lord, have mercy!

- Spare? – Chaos hissed. – I gave you immortality, strength, magic and the ability to follow me! All I wanted in return was loyalty and strict adherence to my will. You were in charge of the hunt for the Seers, Satran-tia! You spent so much time trying to destroy a boy with a potential gift, the likelihood of which being awakened is negligible. But I missed the Seer with the active gift!

- I'll fix everything! - he shouted, rolling on the ground and tearing his face and neck with sharp claws.

– I gave you the opportunity to fix everything! – Chaos hissed. – How many days have already passed since I smelled this spawn of Justice? All the entities living in the bodies behind the Shield were at your disposal! And what result did I get? None! This is not to mention the fact that the Seer should not have been born at all!

- Have mercy! Lord, I will never disappoint you again!

“You’re right,” Chaos sharply clenched his fingers. “The dead haven’t disappointed me yet.”

Satran-tia, wheezing, bent unnaturally, and then flared up with a bright crimson flame. A few moments later, instead of a body, only a handful of ashes remained on the ground.

Having finished the reprisal, Chaos looked around at the quiet servants.

“You have to pay for mistakes,” he said, after which he turned to the outermost figure: “Was this the last refuge of the Mist Horror, Darshan-tia?”

“Unfortunately, yes, Lord,” he whispered in response. “We also lost Gratas and his collection of Nivergate blood.”

- Even worse. Who tried?

– As always: Supreme and head of the order. “There was anger in Darshan-tia’s voice.

“There are too many problems with this werewolf,” Chaos said thoughtfully.

- Eliminate?

- Risky. Travessi cannot be killed so easily; many people will have to be exposed. But we cannot afford this now, especially when the Seer has appeared. First we need to find it, otherwise we simply won’t reach it later. As soon as there is a fuss, the Supreme One will hide her in the Alandor mountains, where none of us can go. Is that so, my friend? “He suddenly turned his gaze to the only living person, who felt very uncomfortable in the company of high-ranking chaosites.

“Yes, but... I... can help in the search,” the man said with excitement.

“Your zeal is commendable,” Chaos grinned. - But this is unnecessary. No need to attract attention. Where you are now working for the benefit of our cause, your efforts are bearing fruit. I'm happy.

“It is a great honor to serve you, Lord,” the man bowed his head.

- This is exactly what is required of you.

The smoky figure moved closer to the man, almost right next to him, and a long claw touched the crystal held in his fingers. For a moment it flashed with a crimson light, and then filled with coal blackness.

“The artifact is full of my power again,” Chaos said with satisfaction. – Continue your great mission without fear. And see you soon, my friend.

A wave of his clawed hand, and the man was carried away by the whirlwind of the portal.

– Is he suitable? – Darshan-tia clarified as soon as the man disappeared.

“More than,” Chaos nodded. – Large magical reserve, also increased after the judge’s initiation. He is perfect.

“And he accepted your power.”

- Oh yeah. Soon I will have complete control over his body, forcing his consciousness into the farthest corner of his brain. The previous carrier has become unusable, and it is dangerous to be in the body of a temporary carrier without complete control. I'm locked here and it makes me angry. Especially now that the Seer’s gift has been activated.

“We will find her, I promise.” I'll personally do the searching. – Darshan-tia bowed.

– I wish I knew where to look. I count on you, Executioner. Bring in Harthan, he has been sitting idle, and the Pathfinder must not lose his skills.

– As you command, Lord. Rest assured, capturing the Seer will not take much time.

“If you find her, let me know right away.” I want to break the neck of this vile spawn of my dearest co-ruler myself.

Chaos turned his gaze to the quiet figures wrapped in black robes and said in an icy tone:

- Get out.

Having bowed at the same time, the Chaosites hastily disappeared into the portals. Darshan-tia left after them, leaving the Lord of Chaos alone.

“Soon... soon, I promise you, dearest Justice, I will turn your world upside down,” he whispered. “I’ll make all your judges and guards work for me, and you’ll howl in prison like I have for the last thousand years.” Every day, every second. I know you hear me and are afraid. And that’s right, this time there will be no mistakes!

Chapter 1

- Dad, please! – I exclaimed in despair. - I want to learn! You yourself said that I should have an education! Don't take me away from the academy!

However, the expression on the face of the tall, fair-haired man standing opposite... now definitely not his father, but the senior judge of the Capital Region, was stern and not allowing for argument. In the dorm room illuminated only by moonlight, his figure in a black judge's robe and with a barely flickering sword at his side looked especially menacing.

“You don’t learn, you just get stuck in different stories.” Now she has completely outdone herself - she interfered in the course of the official investigation! - the parent raged.

Yes, I intervened. But not on purpose! And in the end, she even helped find a secret blood storage facility.

True, this was not an argument for my father, so all that remained was to plaintively repeat:

- This will not happen again! I promise!

- Will not be repeated. Because at home you won’t have a chance to come up with another adventure on your own. Pack your things! “He was relentless.

- I will not go! – I resisted with all my strength. “I’m no longer a little girl, but an adult and independent.” All you can decide before I turn twenty-two is who I should marry. As for the rest, I have the right to make my own decisions! And I decided to stay! My tuition is paid!

– Training – yes, but that’s all. How do you plan to live on, my independent one? – the father clarified sarcastically.

“I’ll find a job,” I squeezed out in response, having little idea how exactly I would do this.

- Job? Do you know this word? – the parent continued to be sarcastic. - Kara, we're wasting time. I said - go home!

- And I said no!

“If you think that I won’t drag you by force, you’re mistaken,” he warned threateningly. “At the same time, at home, I will give a belt to all Karas at once: both adults and independent ones.”

We stood opposite each other like duelists. And it is unknown what it would have come to, but the growing scandal was stopped by a saving knock on the door.

The parent nervously opened it and looked in bewilderment at the smiling Mrs. Tringros.

“Your honor,” the rector greeted her father with a clumsy curtsey. – I’m happy that I found you here. We need to talk about an important matter regarding Kara's training...

- I'm picking up my daughter from the academy! - he growled. - So there’s nothing to talk about.

– Are you taking Kara? – Mrs. Tringros was sincerely surprised. – But she studies so well, she tries! Thanks to her personal example, the entire Defense Faculty pleases us with diligence and knowledge for the first time in many years.

My soul immediately filled with gratitude to this tall, thin woman. Especially after my father’s face took on first an incredulous and then a concentrated expression from his praise towards me.

“As I understand it, your dissatisfaction is related to the recent events that occurred at the academy and the fact that two students were injured,” the rector continued with concern. – But I assure you, there was no negligence on the part of the management of the educational institution in ensuring the safety of students. And I…

“No one is accusing you of anything, Madame Tringros,” interrupted the father. “My daughter does an excellent job of finding trouble herself.” Moreover, until recently she herself did not want to study at the Faculty of Defense.

- And now I want it! I like studying! It's true, dad! “I looked at him pitifully again.

“Your daughter has matured and come to her senses,” the rector immediately added. – If previously Kara’s academic performance left much to be desired, now she is, without exaggeration, one of the best. I think the girl should be given a chance.

Once again, expressing mental gratitude for the unexpected intercession, I continued to beg my parent with my eyes. I didn’t want to quarrel with my dad at all, but I didn’t intend to leave the academy either.

– I promise, I will behave prudently, study and only study! – I solemnly swore.

“I’ve already heard that somewhere,” my father grumbled.

Not angrily, but only with some kind of fatigue. And it became clear that he had almost given up.

“Sorry,” I stammered. - That was the last time. Honestly.

There was a second or two of silence, and the parent reluctantly said with a heavy sigh:

- Fine. But God forbid, I will hear at least one more complaint, Kara. At least one, for any reason. On the same day you will not set foot in the academy.

- Thank you, daddy! – I squealed happily, feeling like a stone had been lifted from my soul with relief.

- That’s great! - Mrs. Tringros sang. “Now could you give me a little attention, your honor?”

My father nodded affirmatively, and I was filled with curiosity, wondering what she wanted to tell me that was so important.

For a moment, the thought even flashed of quietly following them and eavesdropping on the conversation. Who knows, a gift would help? But, remembering my father’s threat, I still stayed in the room. Moreover, the body insistently demanded rest.

I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow.

Despite the day off, the morning started early. I woke up myself worried about the well-being of my friends, whom I had not visited yesterday because of an argument with my father. Today this omission needed to be corrected.

I got ready nervously and quickly - I was too impatient to see the girls as soon as possible. She even sacrificed her hair, simply pulling her dark locks into a tight ponytail. And, as it turned out, I wasn’t the only one in a hurry. The preparations were interrupted by a sharp knock on the door and Cyrus rushing in a second later.

The werewolf's short reddish-brown hair was tousled, his amber eyes sparkled with excitement, and his shirt casually peeked out from under his leather jacket, not tucked into his trousers. In general, it’s immediately obvious that the guy was in a hurry.

- Kara, I'm going to the hospital. Are you with me? – he blurted out.

- Naturally. “I immediately put on a thin woolen coat, demonstrating complete readiness.

Taking my arm, Cyrus immediately rushed out the door. They reached the parking lot where his flyer was located in the blink of an eye, and soon the guy confidently directed the car into the flight corridor.

“They should be fine. Fine!" – I repeated to myself as if I were saying a spell, watching the approaching buildings of the hospital building of the Academy of Medicine.

Having parked the flyer at a long six-story building made of light gray stone, we hastily went inside. Immediately at the entrance, in a spacious gray hall, there was a high information desk, behind which sat an elderly lady.

- How can I help, young people? – seeing us, she asked.

– We would like to visit friends. They arrived yesterday. “Nicoletta Marx and Lilian Loud,” Cy blurted out and leaned forward impatiently, watching as the hospital worker read data on the girls from the visarium screen.

And I bit my lip from tension. Right now...

“I’m afraid you won’t succeed,” the woman answered, frowning slightly.

My heart sank. Did something terrible happen to the girls?!

- Why? “Cyrus asked hoarsely, gripping the counter until his knuckles turned white.

– Visiting these patients is possible only with the personal permission of Mr. Senior Investigator. The chambers in which your friends lie are guarded, so it is impossible to get to them.

Sai and I exchanged looks of disappointment.

– But can we at least find out how they are feeling? “I looked pleadingly at the woman.

“The condition is stable,” she answered briefly. – I can’t say anything more.

The lady expressively turned her gaze to the visarium, indicating that the conversation was over. And Cyrus and I turned around and, leaving the building, sadly walked to the parking lot.

– And how is this “stable state” to be understood? – I muttered. – Consistently good or consistently bad?

“Spit,” Sai muttered nervously. – We must believe in good things. We won't know without access anyway.

“And Andre Travessi has access...” I shivered expressively and dived into the flyer.

“Meddling with Travessi now is suicide,” Cyrus stated gloomily, sitting in the driver’s seat and lifting the car into the air. “After the operation fails, he won’t even listen to us.”

“That’s for sure,” I agreed sadly, looking at the monotonous landscape outside the window.

“But we need to come up with something,” Sai said with irritation, hitting the steering wheel with his hand. - Yes, I’m guilty, but this is not a reason to deprive us of the opportunity to see sick friends. The girls are all alone there, and they don’t let us talk for a couple of minutes. Maybe you can talk to your father?

“Not an option,” I sighed. - He won't help. A few hours ago, dad was actually eager to pick me up from the academy.

- What? – Cyrus was amazed. - How to pick it up? I hope he changed his mind?

– I’ve changed my mind, but I have one last warning. One more mistake and I'm locked in the estate forever. “I shuddered at the bleak prospect.

“Sorry for setting you up,” the guy said dully. “Travessi and Brock are right, I’m a lousy investigator.” He ruined everything and also put you in danger...

- Nonsense! – I interrupted. “We are not weak-willed dummies to be controlled.” Each of us realized what we were getting into. So stop this self-flagellation. Moreover, formally, it was I who got everyone into trouble when I retold a conversation that was not intended for other people’s ears. We made decisions together, and everyone had to pay.

- But you are women.

- And what? Do you think this means that we have no brains? – I exhaled with irritation. - That's enough, Sai. Let's think better about how to get permission. I want to see Nicki and Lil.

“And I want to,” he muttered and frowned at the flight corridor.

But neither I nor Sai had any ideas, so the rest of the journey passed in silence. Having reached the academy, we sadly said goodbye and went to our rooms.

It’s an amazing thing: just recently it seemed to me that living in the same room with someone was very inconvenient. But now, looking at my friend’s empty bed, I felt lonely. And anger also came over me. For everyone. And on Mr. Senior Investigator, and on the Chaosites, by whose grace my friends are now in hospital wards, and I cannot visit them.

Trying to distract myself, I began to sort through things, but the irritation did not subside. On the contrary, the more I looked at the expensive outfits, the more I remembered Lil and the last words of the healer in the gazebo. Unlike me, my friend had nothing. No money, no protection. And now she is in the hospital, due to my fault, by the way, even without a toothbrush and a change of underwear!

Exhaling sharply, I threw away my satin blouse and stood up resolutely. I don’t know how, but you need to get access to the girls. Denying Sai and I the right to visit our friends is unfair. And I don’t care how Andre reacts to my appearance. Let him scream, swear, bite, but we simply must get into the hospital wards of the Academy of Medicine.

Calling a hired flyer, I grabbed my coat and almost ran out of the room. It was time to visit the Investigation Department and talk to Mr. Travessi.

I was lucky: the car arrived quickly. Less than half an hour had passed before I was dropped off on a wide platform in front of a familiar concrete building with a flickering sign “Main Investigation Department of the Capital Region.”

In the most belligerent mood, I flew up the steps and pulled open the massive door. True, as soon as I entered the hall decorated with gray marble, a flickering barrier immediately shot up a meter away from me, blocking my further path. And nearby, as if out of nowhere, two tall werewolves in uniform appeared.

“Good afternoon,” I greeted politely.

“Clarify the purpose of the visit to the department,” the one standing on the right asked coldly, without bothering to answer.

Well, okay. I can’t go with them to a social reception.

– I would like to see Mr. Senior Investigator.

The werewolves, darkening, looked at me carefully, and then looked at each other. After which the “right” one said:

- Today is not a good day. In addition, all meetings with the Senior Investigator are strictly by appointment. You need to call his assistant and arrange an appointment time.

Hm. Yes, it's a problem. I don’t know who they took me for, but judging by a careful look, it looks like one of the annoying fans. In any case, it was to be expected that it would not be so easy to break through to Andre Travessi. It’s easier to catch him at the academy between lectures. But that will happen when! And you need to get permission quickly.

So I had no intention of retreating and said in a firm voice:

“I don’t have time to sign up, I need to talk to him now.” Please kindly inform Mr. Senior Investigator that Karina Thorne has come to see him. And this is very important.

- Karina Thorne? – The werewolves looked at each other again. “The daughter of Capital Region Judge Thorn?”

“Yes,” I confirmed coldly.

Judging by the glances that literally glared at me, the news of our short engagement with Andre Travessi had reached the management. Because they didn’t even ask me anything else. The “right” werewolf immediately reached for the magokomm hanging on his belt and dialed the call.

There was a second pause, and a loud, irritated voice came from there:

It seems that Mr. Senior Investigator clearly did not want to communicate with anyone.

“Mr. Travessi,” the werewolf began somewhat hastily. – Main post duty officer Henry Tiars. You have a visitor.

- I said don't bother me! What's not clear?! – came a dissatisfied roar. – Tell the visitor about office hours and send him… away!

“But this…” the werewolf hesitated, and then blurted out: “This is your ex-fiancee.”

I almost howled with shame. No, well, you have to! You couldn’t introduce me by name, or what?!

- Who?! – But Andre Travessi, stunned by such a statement, howled in the most natural way, out loud.

“Mistress Karina Thorne,” the werewolf answered in confusion, already clearly regretting that he had even decided to disturb the boss who was out of sorts. “She says it’s urgent.”

Silence reigned, which after a few long moments was broken by an irritated:

- Let him pass.

I sighed with relief. Praise be to the Creator!

The flickering barrier disappeared and I hurried to the registration desk. Another werewolf in uniform and shoulder straps quickly wrote out a pass, after which he nodded towards the far staircase. However, I remembered this path even without prompting. So, having passed three arches with scanning spells, she confidently headed to Andre’s office.

I tried not to notice the meaningful glances from the attendants. More gossip about the engagement - less gossip, what's the difference?

The reception room of Mr. Senior Investigator was located on the top floor. The young werewolf who met me said tensely:

- He's waiting for you.

Then he pointed to the door to the office with a look as if there was a fire-breathing dragon behind it, and not the head of the department. Although... judging by the mood that Andre Travessi was in now, perhaps the dragon would have been more peaceful.

Taking a deep breath, I walked to the door and raised my hand to knock, but was immediately startled by a loud voice:

“I know you’re already here, Kara.” Come in.

I came in. I looked around.

Andre Travessi was sitting at a massive table, on which, in addition to office supplies, stood an open bottle of Black Dragon kwiskir.

-Why did you come? – Andre clarified ungraciously, pouring clearly not the first portion of the killer drink into a wide square glass. And then he drank it in one gulp, without wincing or taking a bite.

– And have a bright day to you, Mr. Senior Investigator. – I pretended to curtsey.

- Nothing. “I just wanted to ask... although I want to apologize first,” I began. “We really didn’t think it would turn out like this, and...

– But how could we know that this Gratas is an agent of Chaos?

– And you didn’t need to know anything! You were clearly told not to interfere!

- Please! – I lowered my tone, realizing that otherwise I would not achieve anything from a half-drunk man who was justifiably angry with me. “I understand everything and admit my guilt completely, but I ask you...

– Do you still demand something? – Andre grimaced.

- I don’t demand, but I ask. “I folded my hands in a pleading gesture. “Nicki and Lil are in the hospital, and Cyrus and I aren’t even allowed to visit them without a signed release from you.”

“And they won’t allow it,” Andre snapped gloomily. - They are under guard. And it would be better for your entire company of half-educated investigators to stay apart and think about how to behave in the future.

- But... but... - I was speechless from indignation. - Why? The girls have it enough, but their friends can’t even visit them?

“With such friends, you don’t even need enemies,” the Senior Investigator muttered. “They won’t have time to recover before you find something to get into again.” Of course, you will get out, Mrs. Thorne, because you are under the protection of very strong ancestral magic. Just like the boy - a potential alpha with great life resources. But your two girlfriends, who were foolish enough to get involved in dangerous games, may not be so lucky next time. And instead of a hospital ward, they will go to the family cemetery. So no visits. If that’s all, she’s free,” he growled.

I recoiled as if struck. Hurtful, angry tears welled up in my eyes.

“You are unfair, Mr. Travessi,” I whispered chokedly. “Sai and I would never have gotten involved in this matter if we had known how it would end.” And they certainly wouldn’t have dared to endanger the lives of Nicky and Lil. We just wanted to know about blood and nivergates.

Hearing the last word, the man grimaced as if from a toothache.

– How did you even come across this information?

I desperately wanted to lie, but I understood that even in this state Andre would easily identify a lie.

“I heard your conversation with the Supreme Judge,” I admitted, lowering my head.

- How? – Andre was surprised. “There were two protective blocks on the premises. Although, let me guess, you used the power of the Seer?

- Yes, I didn’t use anything! It just happened that way!

- Well, of course! – There was evil irony in his voice. – You generally manage everything on your own. So I'm keeping your secret, thinking the poor girl doesn't need any trouble. And you, without a twinge of conscience, use your gift to stick your curious nose into other people’s affairs.

“I’ll say it again, I didn’t do anything on purpose, it just happened,” I exhaled. “I walked away from the door, and then a conversation started playing in my head and...

– And you, of course, began to listen to him! – Andre concluded. “And then she told all her friends, without even thinking that it was someone else’s secret!” Oh, I should have immediately locked you away somewhere in the clan lands to avoid! And your friends would be healthy, and not lying unconscious in hospital beds.

It was felt that by saying all this, Andre was deliberately trying to hurt me, as if he wanted to convey part of the pain that was tormenting him at that moment. But even though I understood this, patience ran out.

- You know what! – I exclaimed, leaning my elbows on the smooth surface of the table and leaning forward. “I don’t deny my guilt, but it wasn’t me who allowed the murderer to walk free and kill your friends!” Have you talked to Gratas? Knowing that he is helping the chaosites! AND…

“I was getting closer to him, you idiot!” – Travessi barked in response so that I almost sat down. – I knew that he was interested in me, and gave him the opportunity to get to know himself in order to figure out those who were behind him! And I clearly told you - don’t interfere! And instead you destroyed all my work! All!

Andre rose from his seat with a jerk and was next to him in two steps. Coming close, the man put his hands on the table on either side of me, dousing me with the strong smell of kwiskir. And I pressed myself painfully against the edge of the table with fear.

“At this moment, I greatly regret that I have to protect you,” Andre muttered with quiet fury. “And that one of the first commandments of my order is to preserve your integrity.” This is the only thing stopping me from slapping you with a belt like a naughty puppy. So that I couldn’t get out of bed for a week! Why, in the name of Justice, did such a stupid, foolish, spoiled girl, who has nothing in her head except fashionable shoes and hats, become a Seer?!

And these hurtful words made me feel so painful, so ashamed...

“I’m studying,” was all I could squeeze out and sobbed.

– You’re studying! Not what it should be!

- Sorry!

I sobbed again, and this sobered him up a little. Not much, but Andre stopped putting pressure on me. He just muttered:

- Learn, Kara. Just learn. This is the most important thing for you right now. That is why, although I am taking a risk, I still allow you to stay in the academy. The Seer must have an education.

- I'm trying! Really, I'm trying! – I assured, and then quietly asked: “How did you know that I am a Seer?”

True, I didn’t really count on an answer in his state, but Andre still said:

- Blood. I tried it when you were attacked by a tsifar. Do you remember?

I remembered. And she nodded, looking down in embarrassment.

– I felt that something was wrong. The power moved. And then Gratas came asking what the abnormality in your blood could mean. At that moment, I greatly regretted that it was he who was there then, in the wasteland.

My heart sank in fear.

– Did he find out who I am?

“No,” Andre reassured. – Gratas dealt with the nivergates, but did not know about the peculiarities of the Seers. Yes, and I directed his search in a different direction, saying that your blood is supposedly very similar to the blood of Judge Thorne. And, apparently, this anomaly explains his impressive magical reserve. So Gratas believed that he was looking for a clue to the power of judges, and did not think about anything else.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

“We are very lucky that your blood did not reach the Chaos who are looking for the descendants of the Seers. Otherwise, you would already be dead, like your classmate.

Classmate?

I instantly remembered Victor, who was killed in the Main Atrium, and I stared in horror at the Senior Investigator:

– So the Crimson Mirrors didn’t work by accident?!

“Yes,” Andre confirmed gloomily. – Chaosites destroy all descendants of the Seers, even distant branches, so as not to leave a trace of their genotypes.

– Victor could become a Seer?!

– I don’t know, Kara. Hardly. But one of his ancestors was a Seer. And the guy was identified. The Chaosites had access to the Atrium; it was there that they took our blood. So your friend was simply skillfully pushed and directed into a deadly corridor.

I swallowed the lump of nausea that rose in my throat.

- So, the man who died... your employee... is that why he didn’t go to you, but immediately ran to the Atrium?

– Apparently, he found out about the trap at the last moment and wanted to prevent it. – Pain flashed in Andre’s gaze. “But Atrium was being watched, and when they tried to interfere, my boyfriend was immediately eliminated. The Chaosites, alas, already have many minions, and it is not always possible to thwart their plans. So if word gets out about you...

He didn’t finish, but I already understood. If distant, inactive descendants are so diligently destroyed, then what can we say about the real Seer? Yes, the chaosites will throw all their strength at me! And it will be like in that book! Torture and... and...

ACADEMY OF MAGICAL LAW

Brunette in defense

Lord.

Yes, Lord of Chaos,” the man breathed, unable to take his eyes off what was happening.

And the smoky figure returned to torture. A short wave of his hand, and the creature immediately began to thrash in agony, screaming heart-rendingly:

Lord, have mercy!

Spare? - Chaos hissed. - I gave you immortality, strength, magic and the ability to follow me! All I wanted in return was loyalty and strict adherence to my will. You were in charge of the hunt for the Seers, Satran-tia! You spent so much time trying to destroy a boy with a potential gift, the likelihood of which being awakened is negligible. But I missed the Seer with the active gift!

I'll fix everything! - he shouted, rolling on the ground and tearing his face and neck with sharp claws.

I gave you the opportunity to fix everything! - Chaos hissed. - How many days have already passed since I smelled this spawn of Justice? All the entities living in the bodies behind the Shield were at your disposal! And what result did I get? None! This is not to mention the fact that the Seer should not have been born at all!

Have mercy! Lord, I will never disappoint you again!

“You’re right,” Chaos sharply clenched his fingers. - The dead haven't disappointed me yet.

Satran-tia, wheezing, bent unnaturally, and then flared up with a bright crimson flame. A few moments later, instead of a body, only a handful of ashes remained on the ground.

Having finished the reprisal, Chaos looked around at the quiet servants.

You have to pay for mistakes,” he said, after which he turned to the outermost figure: “Was this the last refuge of the Mist Horror, Darshan-tia?”

Unfortunately, yes, Lord,” he whispered in response. “Besides, we lost Gratas and his collection of Nivergate blood.”

Even worse. Who tried?

As always: Supreme and head of the order. - There was anger in Darshan-tia’s voice.

There are too many problems with this werewolf,” Chaos said thoughtfully.

Eliminate?

Risky. - He suddenly turned his gaze to the only living person, who felt very uncomfortable in the company of high-ranking chaosites.

Yes, but... I... can help in the search,” the man said with excitement.

Your zeal is commendable,” Chaos grinned. - But this is unnecessary. No need to attract attention. Where you are now working for the benefit of our cause, your efforts are bearing fruit. I'm happy.

It is a great honor to serve you, Lord,” the man bowed his head.

This is exactly what is required of you.

The smoky figure moved closer to the man, almost right next to him, and a long claw touched the crystal held in his fingers. For a moment it flashed with a crimson light, and then filled with coal blackness.

The artifact is full of my power again,” Chaos said with satisfaction. - Continue your great mission without fear. And see you soon, my friend.

A wave of his clawed hand, and the man was carried away by the whirlwind of the portal.

Is he suitable? - Darshan-tia clarified as soon as the man disappeared.

More than that,” Chaos nodded. - Large magical reserve, also increased after the judge’s initiation. He is perfect.

And he accepted your power.

Oh yeah.

We will find her, I promise. I'll personally do the searching. - Darshan-tia bowed.

I wish I knew where to look. I count on you, Executioner. Bring in Harthan, he has been sitting idle, and the Pathfinder must not lose his skills.

As you command, Lord. Rest assured, capturing the Seer will not take much time.

If you find it, let me know right away. I want to break the neck of this vile spawn of my dearest co-ruler myself.

Chaos turned his gaze to the quiet figures wrapped in black robes and said in an icy tone:

Get out.

Having bowed at the same time, the Chaosites hastily disappeared into the portals. Darshan-tia left after them, leaving the Lord of Chaos alone.

“Soon... soon, I promise you, dearest Justice, I will turn your world around,” he whispered. “I’ll make all your judges and guards work for me, and you’ll howl in prison like I have for the last thousand years.” Every day, every second. I know you hear me and are afraid. And that’s right, this time there will be no mistakes!

Dad, please! - I exclaimed in despair.

You don't learn, you just get stuck in different stories. Now she has completely outdone herself - she interfered in the course of the official investigation! - the parent raged.

Prologue

The main temple of the Great Guardian was rightfully considered the most beautiful place not only in the Capital region, but also in the entire Latgardian Republic of Order and Justice. The white marble vaults, extending many tens of meters into the air, were crowned by a dome made of translucent moonstone. The sun's rays penetrating into the impressively sized hall played on numerous stained glass windows and sparkled on the gilded double gates of the main entrance.

In the center of the hall, on a round pedestal, there was a crystal shrouded in white radiance, approximately twice the height of a person. Above him, the words blazed with a blinding light: “Justice is a two-edged sword.”

Usually the few visitors to this majestic structure got lost in it. But not on this day.

Today the huge hall was packed almost to capacity, and people kept arriving. They crowded into the wide-open gates, trying to get inside as quickly as possible. And if possible, then make your way closer to the center to take the most comfortable seats.

The ceremonial suits and dresses of the ladies amazed with their splendor and abundance of decorations. The entire elite of society, including the Supreme Council of the Latgardian Republic, gathered today for the ceremony. A special ceremony for the Consecration of the Supreme Judge.

“He’s so young,” one of the gray-haired advisers frowned.

“This is Thorne’s place, but not Brock’s,” echoed a plump representative of the trade guild in an embroidered camisole.

- Of course, Sebastian has a lot of strength, but he has no experience and...

- No experience? – a man standing nearby intervened in the conversation; judging by his insignia, he belonged to the highest nobility. – Brock, although young, has made a dizzying career! He's one of the best.

“Yes, perhaps, after the death of Chief Justice Duningham, there was little choice,” the adviser agreed. - Either he or Thorne.

Unlike men, women's conversations were far from politics and discussions of the achievements of the new candidate. They were much more interested in his appearance:

– Creator, we have never had such a beautiful Supreme Judge! – they sighed, rolling their eyes coyly. “They say that even the Great Guardian of Justice is moved by him.”

Suddenly the talking stopped. A strong, fair-haired, middle-aged man, dressed in a black judge's robe, entered the hall with a firm step. Strict, without golden embroidery, which usually ran along the wrists and along the lower edge of the material. In his hands he held a scabbard with a judge's blade.

The weapon was simple, unadorned and, compared to modern military designs, looked almost harmless. However, everyone knew that in the hands of a judge such swords acquire incredible strength and power.

An uneven rumble echoed over the crowd bowing and curtseying:

- Judge Thorne...

– Senior Judge of the Capital Region.

Without stopping or looking around, the man walked to the center of the hall and stopped near the sparkling crystal.

“His period of mourning has gone on too long,” whispers were heard.

“It’s time for him to get married again.”

The ladies looked with pleasure at his toned figure and beautiful, thoroughbred face, with a firm jawline and lively light brown eyes.

– I don’t understand why not him? – the representative of the trade guild grumbled again.

“I refused,” the adviser answered briefly. – I didn’t explain the reasons, it’s Thorne.

“Apparently, he blames himself for not saving his wife,” suggested a man from the nobility. - Like, if you couldn’t cope, it means you don’t deserve anything else. Moreover, he still has a small daughter...

- Do you think so? – the adviser chuckled incredulously.

The noble interlocutor did not have time to answer. A low and prolonged ringing sound that echoed over the vaults of the temple announced the beginning of the Dedication ceremony.

In the silence that followed, the approaching footsteps sounded particularly loud. A tall young man entered the hall. Slender, dressed like Judge Thorne in a black judge's robe without decoration, only with a silver sash slung over his right shoulder.

The man was truly handsome. His snow-white hair pulled back into a ponytail contrasted with his even tan skin. Chiseled facial features with high cheekbones and a line of slightly pursed lips spoke of determination and self-confidence. And the sparkle of his bright blue eyes revealed an energetic and active fighter.

At the sight of him, many women could not resist barely audible sighs:

- Sebastian...

- How good he is!

Meanwhile, the newcomer approached Judge Thorne, who was standing near the crystal. For several seconds the men looked into each other's eyes without looking away. Then Judge Thorne, bowing his head, stepped back from the pedestal.

Sebastian Brock, on the contrary, rose close to the crystal and placed both hands on one of the sparkling faces. After which his strong voice echoed through the tensely frozen hall:

“I, Senior Judge of the Red Valley region Sebastian Alistair Brock, accept the position of Chief Judge, taking over this post after the death of Chief Judge of Duningham Irian Stern in the battle with Chaos. I swear to uphold honor and law, to serve for the good of the Latgardian Republic, the Council and the people. Like all Supreme Judges, I give a piece of my soul to the Crystal of Truth in the name of Order and Justice.

At the same moment as the last words were spoken, Sebastian was engulfed in a blinding radiance, completely hiding him from the eyes of those present.

However, something went wrong next. Many people in the hall continued to gaze in admiration at the pillar of light emanating from the crystal, but Brock felt that there was no connection with the souls of his predecessors. It was as if some invisible thin barrier stood between him and the power contained within the crystal.

At the same time, Sebastian himself was increasingly engulfed in heat with each passing second, becoming wild, almost unbearable. And finally, unable to bear it, he fell to one knee with a groan. At the same time, a female figure appeared from the dazzling glow, as if woven from many sparks.

– Great Guardian! – Sebastian exhaled hoarsely, no longer daring to rise. He did not expect such an honor from the Great Guardian of Justice, who personally honored the initiation with her presence.

“My poor boy... I’m sorry, I have no other choice,” she sadly whispered in response. “You are so young, and I will have to take so much from you!”

“I will do whatever you ask, Great Guardian.” In the service of Order, I am ready to give my soul.

- I know, I know. But it is your soul that you will have to leave behind. Crystal is not for you. But emotions and life... I'm sorry.

A sparkling ball fell from the Guardian’s translucent hands and hit the man’s chest, forcing him to arch and scream from wild pain that seemed to tear through his very essence. However, just a few seconds later, the pain and heat subsided, filling Sebastian's body with strength. And at the same time shackling all his feelings, freezing them, as if covering them with a thick crust of ice.

Sebastian stood up shakily. The glow that separated those present from what was happening at the crystal went out.

– Welcome the new Chief Justice of the Latgardian Republic, Sebastian Alistair Brock! – Judge Thorne said loudly, handing him the judge’s blade with a bow.

The entire hall bowed deeply and curtsied, exhaling synchronously:

- Greetings, your honor!

However, not a shadow of a reciprocal smile or gratitude flashed on the face of the new Chief Justice. Ice-blue eyes looked at those gathered with absolute indifference. It seemed that all the colors of life had faded in this young man, and his face was frozen, like an alabaster mask.

One short nod instead of the traditional words of gratitude and assurances of service, and Sebastian Brock left the temple with a measured step.

Much later, when the temple doors closed behind the last visitor and the hall plunged into night darkness, the crystal flared up again. However, this time the light was dim, deathly, and crimson flashes snaked along the edges. And somewhere in its very depths, a black figure with a bone, disfigured muzzle and flaming holes in the eye sockets was raging. Long black claws scraped at the sparkling edges of the crystal in a vain attempt to break it from the inside.

But there was still not enough strength.

What is Legally Brunette? Almost the same as the movie "Legally Blonde". The message is the same, only with a fantasy twist. What to do if your career dreams are destroyed, and you go from the elite to the “losers”?
What to do if a guy exchanged you for your best friend and all your “kind and faithful” friends stopped talking to you at once?
What to do, what to do? Dry the crackers. You are Kara Thorne and it is not in your rules to retreat!
By the way, meet Kara, a twenty-year-old student at a prestigious academy, who took a course in general jurisprudence, has now studied for three whole years, and was waiting, like all distributions. The daughter of an influential senior judge who once voluntarily renounced his status as Chief Justice.
A little about the academy - four specialized faculties, namely:
The first is tax law. Simplest.
The second is the Faculty of Investigation and Prosecution, which most often includes werewolves.
The third is the Faculty of Defense. The position is formal, because There are no true Seers left for a long time.
The fourth is the coolest, the Faculty of Judicial Affairs.
It was him that Kara aimed at, waiting for the courier with a notification about the distribution, it was a bummer, despite the fact that the student’s magical reserve was above average.
Hello to you, the faculty of grey. Faculty of Defense.
Everything that is not done is for the better and 11 suitcases filled to the brim with rags are not much, but they will help brighten up the gray tones of the hated faculty. With a couple of touches and a mouse-colored robe, the robe will turn into something shiny and glamorous, and the entire faculty, including the boys, will resemble a flower garden.
Long live the faculty of glamorous defense! For the first three years, Kara spent little time studying, skipping classes, preferring parties, and simultaneously emptying her father’s accounts. But the time has come to grow up, the time when you need to prove that you are not an empty place...
And I didn’t want to blush in front of the new teachers, namely the Supreme Judge and the Senior Investigator. Young, dashing, two handsome guys - single... New friends were found, starting with my roommate, new and real, and school would go on as usual, but already with positive marks.
But more than once or twice Kara will get into trouble, and more than once or twice, to the envy of all the female students, and perhaps even students, the above-mentioned teachers will turn out to be the rescuers.
Extremely light, I would even say a summer book. Don't expect anything extraordinary and you will be happy.
And the story with Kara does not end with this book, more than one or two books have already been written and published, and perhaps I will meet her. Maybe you'll want something sweet.
And they’re already calling me on the marathon, so bye bye. P.S.: as I already mentioned in my story, the book was won in a giveaway.

There are pie books that the brain should use in that state of being when you want to kill, fatigue has long taken over, you want to relax and just read something... pie. Films also have such a category, why not, as well as other pastimes, their goal is to save the consciousness from overload and simply give it a rest. "Legally Brunette" is just such a delicious pie, in which there is there will be plot lines suggested by the film of almost the same name about a cute girl with hair the color of the sun, who proved that intelligence works, and how, not only in strong academics. And if at one time you happily unloaded your brain by watching “Legally Blonde” over a bucket of popcorn, then “Legally Brunette” will not let you down in terms of literature. There is where to laugh, there is where you want to give the main character a kick in the pretty butt, because in some places she behaves in the same direction as the wall. With all this, the matter is not limited to the exclusively banter and cute girl component, because in addition to a potential love triangle, an epic about real friends and a calling in life, mixed into a cocktail along with practice and heels, we are waiting for blood, guts, harsh dark comrades, a little Moreover, the characters and a serious plot for a serious and long-standing confrontation. Yes, there was some selectivity, but here she still plays the role that is correct in terms of proportion and does not irritate her. There is also a great episode of a meeting with the mother of one of the characters from the “almost in bed” position. For this one scene, I’m ready to applaud the authors, because it’s brilliant. As a result, I’ll go read the second part.

Dreams are like a kaleidoscope. When one breaks, a new one is formed from its fragments. I am so confused that it is difficult to express in words.
How many times have I changed my rating for this book, you ask?
Five times. These five times I doubted whether I liked it, but now, two weeks later, I realized that this book is mine. She completely suits me both in terms of her writing style and the energy she carries.
And recently, the only book whose plot I actually remembered almost by heart. Beauty is truly a terrible force. She is able to turn even the most notorious lazy people into diligent students. Amazing characters, especially men, they are so “wow”, one is more mysterious than the other, one hundred percent, they are both irresistible and attractive, even on the page of a book. And although the main character sometimes appears stupid, but a brunette, this does not spoil the book at all, on the contrary, it adds some zest. It’s a small opinion, but I expressed my opinion, I’m very glad that I decided to do this, because I really want to see a continuation as soon as possible, which depends on the rating of this work. I will prove that they were wrong! And it doesn’t matter what faculty I study at!
