ONE OK ROCK are a Japanese power pop/alternative rock band recorded under the AMUSE label. They play rock of various styles, but at the same time they manage to maintain their original sound, also thanks to the wonderful vocals of Taka
The name ONE OK ROCK comes from one o'clock - the night time when the band gathered for rehearsals

The group was founded in 2005, on the initiative of guitarist Toru (who also sang and rap), who teamed up with bassist Ryota. Toru and Ryota were originally members of the hip-hop group Heads. In the summer of 2005, they formed the group ONE OK ROCK, and they were joined by another guitarist of American-Japanese origin, Alex. And later - vocalist Taka (ex. NEWS)

After a number of successful concerts, the musicians released their first album, One Ok Rock, in mid-2006, followed by another mini-album, Keep It Real. In 2007, permanent drummer Tomoya joined the band. His parts were first recorded on “Naihi Shinsho” (2007), songs from this release were played on the radio, and opened the way to a wider public. The release of their debut studio album, “Zeitakubyou” (2007), was preceded by a tour, followed by 2 records in 2008.

In mid-2009, the band's guitarist Alex was involved in a scandal. According to police, a drunken Alex was traveling by train to the city of Kawasaki and molested a 21-year-old private school student. He was arrested and admitted all the charges brought against him. Because of this, the group canceled their tour of Japan and canceled the release of the single "Around the World Shonen" scheduled for April 6, 2009. The title song of the single was supposed to be the theme song for the series "God Hand Teru", but due to the scandal, the creators of the drama abandoned this idea and from cooperation. It was decided that the only way for ONE OK ROCK to safely continue their work was for Alex to leave the group.

Since May 2009, One Ok Rock has become a quartet, having decided not to look for a new guitarist.
After a long break, the single "Kanzen Kankaku Dreamer" was released on February 3, 2010. It ranks 9th on the Oricon chart. On June 9, 2010, ONE OK ROCK released their fourth studio album, "Niche Syndrome".
Their next single "Answer is Near" is released on 02/16/2011. On July 20, the group releases their first A-side single "Re:make / NO SCARED", NO SCARED became the theme in new game for Play Station Portable "Black★Rock Shooter THE GAME", created based on the popular OVA and song of the same name Miku Hatsune.
Released in October 2011 new album Zankyou Reference, which rose to number two on the Oricon chart in its first week of sales. Concerts as part of the promotional tour always attracted full houses, and the two-day final performance took place on the stage of the huge YOKOHAMA ARENA stadium.

In 2012, ONE OK ROCK took part in the recording of a collection of covers of songs legendary group Nirvana, for whom they performed a song Smells Like Teen Spirit. On May 30, to the delight of fans, the recording of the winter concerts in Yokohama was released on DVD. In May-June as part of the Start Walking tour The World Tour musicians played outside of Japan for the first time: concerts took place in Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. The release of the single The Beginning is scheduled for August, which will become the theme of the full-length film. The band plans to spend the rest of the year on tour: it will begin on September 4 and end on November 16.

He was interested in rock music from elementary school, and in high school he decided to seriously take up it himself, for which he invited Alex (a grade higher) and Ryota (a grade younger) who studied with him.

Taka took some time to chat with JaME about the band, the changes they've recently gone through, and the future.

Popular rock band ONE OK ROCK is back after a somewhat noisy summer with a new line-up, a fantastic ZEPP tour last November and a new single Kanzen Kankaku Dreamer, which was released on February 3rd. JaME had a chance to talk with the vocalist Taka during the Christmas holidays and find out about changes in the group and new ONE OK ROCK.

Could you please introduce yourself?

Taka: I Taka, vocalist ONE OK ROCK.

Now there are four musicians in the band, has this influenced your sound in any way?

Taka: Yes! (laughs)

First two guitarists, now one in person Toru- this is a very big change. How do you deal with this?

Taka: Of course, during recording we include more guitar in our songs, they were originally written for two guitars. When it came to this tour, to overcome any incompatibility since we now only have one guitarist, we cut guitar parts where we could cut them. I think the album we're recording now is completely different from the others. Since we now have one guitar, the sound of the bass lines has also been reduced, our melodies have become more prominent, the music has become more rock and simpler.

Do you use the same arrangements during concerts?

Taka: We only used them for one song Never stop dreaming.

Except for that song Toru fits all the others into one guitar?

Taka: Yes. We increased the bass presence where we could, and I played guitar on two songs.

You recently returned with a fairly extensive national tour after a hiatus. Was this tour different from previous ones?

Taka: Our music has become simpler. I think our motivation has increased; Each of us has our own responsibilities and each has the same vision of the material as the others. Previously, we were like a pentagon that was difficult to keep in balance. Since there are now four of us and we are like a square, the distance between us has become the same, and we can go through what we encounter together; I think our productivity has improved.

It feels like each individual member's contribution to the band's music has increased.

Taka: I think yes. When there were five of us, each of us continued to go our own way and thought about what was happening as if we believed that the rest of the participants were at the same level. But when there were four of us, we became equals and started thinking about the same things in terms of songwriting and performing.

You've all matured a whole year and now you seem even cooler.

Taka: Thank you very much! (laughs)

Taka: I think yes. I can sing much louder than before, and our music will also be simpler and rockier.

You have a new single coming out in February. Dreamer (完全感覚Dreamer). Could you tell us about it? In the title song Dreamer The lyrics in English and Japanese are perfectly combined, it’s just wonderful. How did you feel when you wrote the words?

Taka: I wrote them directly as is. I used to write complex lyrics and compare everything I wrote to different things, but now if I express the Japanese title of the song Kanzen kankaku Dreamer just on English language, then it will simply be “Dreamer”, and “Kanzen kankaku” means “wonderful feeling”. This song expresses how we will mix our feelings to chase our dreams, how we will use our powers to get something, and how we will only go forward. This song will be really rock style.

This is a strong, moving rock track with an "explosion" of the main melody. Why did you choose the song in addition? Lonlina?

Taka: This song was planned to be an extra song on the previous single. Since we are currently writing and recording a lot of songs, this track expresses our changes better than others. So we thought we should release it as soon as possible since we still have a lot of songs.

Did you re-record it?

Taka: No, she is almost the same as she was. We only re-recorded the first part.

Regarding the lyrics of this song, I think that you see reality as it really is. Do you always see things so objectively?

Taka: Maybe yes. I try to see everything as objectively as possible and not create a reflection of myself... ...but it's quite difficult. (laughs)

IN Ring Wanderung the message is “don’t miss the moment, live now with all your strength.”

Taka: Yes. I wrote the lyrics for it together with Dreamer. Meaning Ring Wanderung is that “if we always look down, we will not be able to achieve our goal.” This means that we must see things objectively. Of course, the “present” is important, but not only; I wanted to say that “we will draw line from ourselves to the goal and just run along it. We are always looking at the things in front of us, we cannot know what the future holds for us, and no one knows what we will become in the future, so we will just look at the goals we have set and we will run towards them.”

The cover of this single features an Ouroboros, a snake that has grabbed its tail. You compare it to the title Ring Wanderung?

Taka: No, we consulted with the designer after we finished all the songs. This symbol means "infinity", so we made this cover as it expresses our future possibilities and present motivation.

In a previous interview you mentioned that you were influenced by the Western emo scene at the time. Has this changed? Are there any new influences?

Taka: We haven't changed much. The reason we started the band wasn't because “we like the same music, let's start a band,” it was because “we want to make music and be in a band.” We learned more and more, and our favorite music changed along with us. So, at first our theme was “emotional” (emotional from English “emotional”), but even we don’t know for sure if it was actually “emotional”, if you think about it objectively. But we came pretty close to this style. I don't think we were able to achieve the "emotional" look we were going for, and I think other people would think the same, but what we have to do now is to do what we can do with all our strength, and we want to do everything more steadfastly.

Do you clearly see your goals and ideals and go straight towards them?

Taka: I think yes. First of all, we deal with the things around us, set goals and achieve them one by one.

Did anything new influence you?

Taka: Well, not particularly. When we started writing music, mixing styles was already popular, and it was difficult for us to listen to the usual rock that was popular before. But I think music moves with time, so this genre may become popular in the future. Perhaps the genre we love and are working on now will become popular in ten years. I don't know this, but we go through trial and error, listen to different artists and absorb their experience all the time.

Is there anything new you'd like to try in your future releases? What about the things you would like to show through your music?

Taka: Well, it's very difficult, but we want to make singles and albums that we think are cool. We always think that way, but we might think that “we want to do this next time,” we want to find the next step in writing albums. I think it's great if we finish a job feeling like “we want to do something like this next time” rather than “we did this.” I think this is the most important thing.

So it's not a feeling of wanting to try different aspects?

Taka: No. We don't understand at all music theory, and I think it’s deeper than we imagine. Therefore, we have not yet reached the point where we can say “this is it!” What's more important is that we make albums through research and discovery.

Can you recommend to our readers any early or recent CDs?

Taka: Well, it's hard to say, because there are many different ones. It's quite difficult to advise people who already listen to our music and those who are only slightly interested in it. Regarding what we would like to advise them to listen to... Now there are four of us, and in our music you can find a new direction, so I think that you should listen to everything that interests you. Everything is OK! (laughs)

Before taking a break from the band, you played an unreleased song at a concert. Will it be on the new single? If not, do you plan to release it?

Taka: This release has already been canceled once. I think we will release it sometime later in new form, but this is not planned now.

The Zepp tour will take place in mid-2010. What have you planned?

Taka: We have received a lot of wishes from fans, so I want to make them come true. As the halls get bigger, the performances we strive for will get better. But we want to release everything planned during the Zepp tour, as the band is concentrating on becoming more organized.

What do you want to get out of this tour? Have you noticed any things while being around the public?

Taka: We must have more patience since the four band members must be real band members. I just want to say that we should give ourselves more to music, think what we need. I think that concerts are my reason to live, and if I couldn't express myself correctly on stage, I would constantly feel that there was no point in continuing. So I will work hard to be able to express things more directly.

I think you could sense that the audience was waiting for you. Once your tour was cancelled, everyone was waiting for you and constantly supporting you, and you could feel their anticipation like "finally we can see you."

Taka: Yes. I felt that we were supported by a great power, much greater than our own. It might have been something that only us on stage could feel, but in reality I felt so much more.

Are you planning any special concert, such as an acoustic concert, for your fans?

Taka: Yes. It would be cool if we ever manage to do something like this. We mostly build setlists from melodies, not riffs, so some songs would sound better acoustically. I think we will be able to give such a concert in the future.

In your previous interview you said “I feel like I'm trying to stand on my own two feet.” Did you succeed?

Taka: I think it hasn't changed much and I feel that "security is the greatest enemy". (laughs) Even if I could get used to big waves and couldn't ride them, it would be useless. If I can't learn how to perform on stage, we won't be able to wrestle well enough. If you compare it to surfing, then it would be exactly like that. I mean there's no point in just sitting still.

At concerts, during several songs you played the guitar and sang. Should we expect the number of such songs to increase?

Taka: Well, I don't think I'll play guitar that much. (laughs) To be the person I need to be, it's more important for me as a performer to hold a microphone, run around the stage and convey my lyrics, thoughts and melodies to the audience than to play the guitar. So I try not to think about it and write songs.

Are you well prepared physically for this tour?

Taka: One of our members got the flu and we canceled one performance, but I made it through...even without getting a score of 100. (laughs)

Please leave a message for our readers.

Taka: We will continue to write music and organize tours, so please listen to our music if you have the opportunity!

ONE OK ROCK is one of the most famous modern rock bands in Japan. The international success of the group can be explained quite simply: ONE OK ROCK works hard on their sound, while following global trends. Today, the music portal Eatmusic tried to track the full extent of the influence of the American rock industry on the work of the group ONE OK ROCK.

We generally love music as a whole, without dividing it into genres. And we wanted to create a group to learn more about music. We love rock most of all, and that's why we listen to it a lot. Three months after we created the group, we wanted to create our own own style and achieve our original sound, and then we decided: “We will try our best to achieve this!

ONE OK ROCK band members:

  • Taka (Morita Takahiro) – vocals
  • Toru (Yamashita Toru) – vocals, guitar
  • Ryota – Kohama Ryota – bass guitar
  • Tomoya – Kanki Tomoya – drums

How did the group come about?

ONE OK ROCK is interested in the fact that each of their albums is different from the other, or rather, each album has an “individual” sound. This is due to the fact that the group is influenced by different genres and performers each time. But let's start in order.

ONE OK ROCK appeared in 2005, and quite interestingly: it happened after the concert of the group RIZE, which prompted Toru to create the group. RIZE's creativity was reflected in the group's initial compositions. In one of the interviews, when asked: “How the group was created,” Toru answered: “Influenced by the group RIZE,” and the others said that Toru invited them, and only Tomoya thought it would be cool and interesting.

Another interesting fact associated with the name of the group. It came from the words “one o’clock”, which was due to the fact that the team rehearsed on weekends and in the evening. But since there is no "L" sound in Japanese, the phrase was split into OK ROCK. And after all this, the group received the name ONE OK ROCK.

In 2006, the guys signed a contract with the Amuse, Inc. label. In July of the same year, the debut mini-album “ONE OK ROCK” was released, which in style and sound is very similar to RIZE, while in almost all interviews the participants do not deny the fact that their work at one stage or another was influenced by some or group. In one interview they said: “We have already released three albums, each of which has its own “color”. Our tastes in music change every time, and our albums clearly show what style of music inspired us at that time. The core of ONE OK ROCK doesn't change, we just add the sound that impressed us at the time. But that sound interacts with ours, and so each album looks different.” But with this mini-album, ONE OK ROCK has only just begun its ascent.

Discography in section

The first full-length album was released in November 2007 under the title "Zeitakubyō". This album already has a clean sound compared to the previous mini-albums (they were indie). And it’s worth noting that this album included the group’s first single, which brought considerable fame to the radio. IN this period The band was influenced by Good Charlotte, which is strongly evident especially in the composition “Borderline”.

In 2008, the group released two albums, the first “Beam of Light” and the second “Kanjō Effect”. From the second album we highlight the song “20 years old”. In 2008, three members of ONE OK ROCK crossed the 20-year mark. Listening to these albums, you can clearly hear the emo rock sound, and here the biggest influence was My Chemical Romance and Enter Shikari.

The next album was released in 2010, after a year-long break, which was caused by the departure of the guitarist from the group. The record was called “Niche Syndrome”, and its overall sound was influenced by different groups, but SaoSin are heard more clearly here. ONE OK ROCK's fifth album, "Zankyo Reference", was released in October 2011, this album moved away from the "emo" sound to alternative rock, and they became closer to Green Day.

The next two albums "Jinsei×Boku=" and "35XXXV" are similar to Coldrain and Linkin Park respectively. Especially the last album, because it was completely recorded in America, has two versions (one in Japanese, the other in English). In support of both works, ONE OK ROCK went on tour.

After their last albums, the group began to be compared to Linkin Park.

One of the latest works by ONE OK ROCK – Cry Out:

This Thursday, the Eatmusic portal will meet the younger brother of ONE OK ROCK - in the literal sense, a young group that has become a breakthrough on the Japanese scene.

But he didn't like playing with them, so Toru insisted that Taka joined ONE OK ROCK. However, soon after the guys signed a contract with the Amuse label, YU left the team: his parents objected musical career son, and he himself wanted to become an actor.
Kanki Tomoya was teaching at ESP (Music Academy) at the time and was not very successful group, so in 2006 he became a session drummer ONE OK ROCK and officially joined the team only in 2007.
Name ONE OK ROCK comes from the English phrase " one o'clock" - the time at which they began rehearsing, since at one in the morning the studio rent was much cheaper. However, the Japanese language does not have the sound "l", so the guys changed " o"clock" on " o"crock" (or " o"krock"), later changing the spelling to " ok rock".

2007–2009: Debut and line-up changes

The debut single "Naihi shinso" peaked at number 48 on the Oricon chart and sold 15,000 units. The second single "Yume Yume" became even more successful, taking 43rd position on the same chart.
Following the singles, the group released their debut studio album "Zeitakubyō" in 2007 and embarked on the "Tokyo-Osaka-Nagoya Quattro Tour".
The rockers presented their next long play, “Beam of Light,” to listeners in May 2008. And in 2012, four years after the release, in an interview with Rockin'On Japan magazine, the guys from ONE OK ROCK shared that they did not consider this album a full-fledged studio disc, regarding its recording as a stage in the formation of the group. They didn’t have the right mindset to work on this long-play, but they understood that they had to record it so that the development of the team would not stall. As a result, the group produced an album in the punk rock genre. Still ONE OK ROCK during concerts they never perform songs included in " Beam of Light", since they do not quite correspond to the spirit of the group. Shortly after the release of their second studio disc, the group performed on the Shibuya AX stage.
In November 2008 ONE OK ROCK released their third longplay "Kanjou Effects". By this time, the musicians had gained enough experience to make the new songs more serious and of higher quality. The guys were fascinated by Western music. They tried to achieve a similar sound in their songs in order to attract the attention of new producers. Unfortunately, not everyone in the group liked these changes: between Such And Alex There were disagreements about the sound of the third album.
In April 2009 Alex was arrested for sexual harassment: a 21-year-old student accused him of molesting her on the train. The musician was charged and the case went to trial.
This situation greatly affected the group's activities. Ryota even intended to change positions from bassist to guitarist, as the guys felt that it was unacceptable for them to look for a new member.
The next single was supposed to be "Around the World Shounen". Its release was scheduled for May 6, and the title song of the same name was chosen as the soundtrack for the drama "God Hand Teru". However, the group had to cancel its release, as the channel refused their song, choosing another one due to the scandal. The tour was canceled for the same reason. Japan.
In May 2009 it was announced that ONE OK ROCK will continue their activities without Alexa who returned to the USA. Toru took over as lead guitarist, and the band had to re-arrange all the songs to accommodate one guitar rather than two.

2010–2012: new line-up, "Niche Syndrome" and "Zankyo Reference"

The last concert of the tour in the nation's capital took place on November 28 at the Nippon Budokan stage. On February 16, the group released a DVD of this performance, "This is My Budokan?!".

For the first time, musicians had the opportunity to perform their songs on the stage of the largest concert hall Kanto region. A total of 24,000 tickets were sold for the Yokohama concerts. On May 30 of the same year, a disc with a recording of this tour was released.

And at the end of the year they performed again at Radio Crazy And Countdown Japan.
In June 2012, the group went on their first overseas tour "Start Walking The World": they performed in South Korea , Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. Japanese musicians' concerts featured musicians and bands such as 9mm Parabellum Bullet, Mao Abe, Hello Sleepwalkers and Crossfaith.

In 2007, permanent drummer Tomoya joined the band. His parts were first recorded on “Naihi Shinsho” (2007), songs from this release were played on the radio, and opened the way to a wider public.
