Comedy in three acts. Gordey Karpych Tortsov, a wealthy merchant

Let's put aside the routine arrogance that nestles in all of us, no matter how simple we may be, let's forget that until now we have seen only dirt and immorality in the images of merchant life, let's try to look at the participants in this Christmas conversation, as a Russian person should look at good Russian people, and then, perhaps, the veil that hides from us such a simple and so close to us poetry will fall from our eyes! We have already spoken briefly about the shortcomings of the comedy under consideration, and in view of the beauties with which they are redeemed, it is impossible to complain about them, but nevertheless we consider it our duty to point out one of the said shortcomings, for it flickers in several subsequent works of Mr. Ostrovsky and thereby forces us to assume in giving our author one fold from which he can and must free himself. The fallacy in question is a cool and whimsical handling of the intrigue of the play; an appeal, perhaps still of some importance in the theatre, but unpleasantly striking in reading. Gordey Karpych Tortsov, who had been busy with bad deeds and crafts for so long, had tormented his family for so many years, neglected his brother and rudely reproached Mitya for his poverty, as a result of a small scolding and requests, Lyubim suddenly turns to the good path, repents of his past, finally gives an unexpectedly prosperous turn the whole history of lovers.

“Poverty is not a vice” is a play by Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky, a playwright in Russian literature. This play is written in the style of comedy. The story describes the situation of the love of a wealthy merchant's clerk to his daughter, who is against their connection and prevents the lovers from being together.

This story is the property of Russian literature. It teaches understanding, responsiveness, highlights life principles and views. But not many people have the opportunity to read the comedy in its entirety due to excessive employment, because the story is quite voluminous.

If a person does not have such an opportunity, but wants to read such a play, he can read Ostrovsky’s story “Poverty is not a vice”, a summary of the chapters, which briefly and briefly describes the main events and incidents of the work. Lyubov Gordeevna Tortsova	Gordey's daughter. She is described as a girl with a broad soul, able and willing to help people around her. According to the plot, she falls in love with a poor but very nice guy Mitya, who works for his father.
Mitya	Tortsov's clerk. The poor young man is forced to live in a small room and receive a penny for his work from Tortsov. He falls in love with Lyubov Gordeevna and secretly wants to marry her.
Pelageya Egorovna Tortsova	The wife of a selfish merchant. A woman sacredly honors Russian traditions and customs, condemns her husband's intentions to break into high society. Having learned about the secret love of the clerk and his daughter, Pelageya supports her daughter, but does not dare to go against her husband.

Act one

Events take place in the county town on Christmas time (Old Russian holiday).

Chronology of events:

The protagonist of the comedy, Gordey Karpych, became very angry after another drunken antics of his brother, considering it an insult.
The second act begins with the arrival of his daughter, wife and guests. Mitya, who has been in the room all this time, goes into the office and is eager to work, but he does not succeed. He is in love and his thoughts are occupied by the beautiful Lyubov Gordeevna.
Pelageya invites Mitya to the table and complains about her selfish and narcissistic husband, who, after a trip to the capital, wanted to live in a new way, to join the high society of intellectuals.
She notes that the husband is going to marry their only daughter to a Muscovite, because in their village there is no equal party of Lyubov Gordeevna.
After a conversation between Pelageya and Mitya, Yasha, the merchant's blood nephew, enters the room. He strikes up a conversation with Mitya about his love for the merchant's daughter.
During the conversation, the cheerful and spontaneous Razgulyaev enters with an accordion, who begins to invite everyone to sing and have fun.
After that, the evil Gordey Karpych bursts into the room and demands that Mitya sew a new frock coat, arguing that it is not customary to walk around like a poor man in his house.
After Gordey leaves the room, his beloved comes to Mitya with her friends:
Masha.
Lisa.
Anna Ivanovna.
With the help of Anna's cunning trick, the lovers are left alone. The guy reads poetry to Love, confesses his love.
After what he heard, the embarrassed daughter of the merchant writes a reply to the guy, where she confesses her reciprocal love feelings for him. After that, she leaves.
Brother Gordeya enters the room and hints at revenge on him for his unworthy attitude towards Mitya.

Important! Lyubim wanted to take revenge not only for the insult inflicted on Mitya, but also for the insult and humiliation on the part of his own brother in relation to himself.

Action two

Chronology of events:

Anna and Lyubov are located in the living room. Mitya enters them and asks if his lover wrote the truth about her feelings. Having clarified this, they mutually decide to go and ask for blessings from her father for their marriage.
At this time, the living room is filled with an abundance of guests who are having fun, dancing and singing with might and main. But suddenly the owner of the house suddenly appears and the fun stops.
Having learned about Mitya's intentions, he drives the guy and all the guests out of the house.
Gordey intends to marry his daughter to a wealthy manufacturer Afrikan Korshunov. He comes to the girl, gives her earrings with diamonds and hints at wealth and prosperity in marriage with him.
Upon learning of African's intention to marry her, the girl pulls out her hand, but her father declares that the decision on the wedding has already been made and this is not discussed. He says that Love will soon move to the capital and marry African.
Upon learning of her father's decision, the girl is in despair. She cries, begs her father not to do this, not to marry her to an unloved man, but Gordey is adamant.

The third act takes place the next day.

Gordey Karpych Tortsov - the hero of A. N. Ostrovsky's comedy "Poverty is not a vice", a rich merchant, father of Lyubov Gordeevna, brother of Lyubim Karpych. The character's name speaks for itself. Gordey Karpych is a proud and arrogant man. After the death of his father, he chose a profitable institution as his inheritance, and gave it to his brother Lyubim in money and promissory notes. Lyubim Karpych quickly squandered part of the inheritance in Moscow, and entrusted the rest to the manufacturer Korshunov, who later deceived him. Gordey Karpych, on the contrary, did not lose his inheritance, but increased it and was very proud of it.

Throughout the work, various emotional outbursts of Tortsov can be traced. In the first and second act, he appears as an angry and angry master. Everyone around him is annoying, including household members and guests. He often yells at his clerk Mitya. Paying him a meager salary, he demands that he buy a more expensive caftan and not go to visit them in cheap things. He even considers his brother's behavior offensive, while Lyubim is forced to earn his living by buffoonery. He considers his wife an uneducated ignoramus and does not hide it.

Having visited Moscow, Gordey Karpych decided that his place was only in the capital and in the highest circles. Now nothing Russian is to his liking, but give only foreign. That is why he makes friends with the manufacturer Afrikan Savich, who often drinks with his English director. However, he does not even suspect how cunning this manufacturer is and that it was he who ruined his brother. He is even ready to give his only daughter for this rich old man. Fortunately, in the third act Lyubim Karpych exposes Korshunov and the wedding is cancelled. In this part of the work, the reader sees Gordey Karpych from a different angle. This is a person who is able to admit his mistakes and repent. He thanks his brother for opening his eyes, and blesses his daughter to marry the man she loves.

One of the main characters of the work is Tortsov Gordey Karpych, presented in the form of a wealthy merchant, who is the brother of Lyubim Karpych and the father of Lyubov Gordeevna.

The author portrays Gordey Karpych as an arrogant proud man who increased the inheritance received after the death of a parent, which he divided between himself and his brother according to his own scheme, taking ownership of a profitable enterprise, and transferring money and securities to his brother. Lyubim Karpych quickly spent his part of the inheritance, being deceived by the manufacturer Korshunov, and began to earn his living at the moment by buffoonery.

Gordey Karpych is distinguished by a grumpy and despotic disposition, expressed in anger and anger towards others, who constantly annoy him. It is typical for him to break down on his assistant, the clerk Mitya, constantly finding fault and shouting at the young man, demanding the impossible from him. Giving the clerk a small salary, Tortsov points Mitya to his miserable caftan and demands to change it for a good expensive thing, appearing at his house. The actions of his brother, Lyubim Karpych, from the point of view of Tortsov, are insulting and unworthy of their surname, and Gordey Karpych calls his wife nothing more than an uneducated ignoramus who does not deserve a drop of respect not only from his side, but also from those around him.

Once having visited the capital, Gordey Karpych decides to stay in Moscow, because he believes that he should revolve exclusively in the secular metropolitan society. Tortsov begins to get involved in foreign things, which seem to him outlandish in comparison with Russian life. The swindler Afrikan Savich, a manufacturer, with whom Gordey Karpych often drinks, becomes his friend, not suspecting that this is the very person who contributed to the ruin of Lyubim Karpych, and now, rubbing himself into Tortsov’s trust, he longs to take possession of his fortune.

Gordey Karpych promises the cunning manufacturer, who is a rich old man, to marry his only daughter to him, but, thanks to Lyubim Karpych, Afrikan Savich is exposed and the wedding does not take place. Tortsov repents of his perfect deed and realizes his mistake, having reconciled with his brother, who helped open his eyes to the true goals of the manufacturer.

At the end of the play, Gordey Karpych gives his consent to his daughter's marriage to her beloved person.
