Educational games for children to memorize English numbers. English numbers in coloring books, videos and flashcards Introduction of numbers in English for children

For the first time, children begin to get acquainted with a foreign language in kindergarten. Learn simple words that are found in everyday life. Every first grader should know how to count in English within ten. This is a basic program, it must be mastered by the child when entering school. Numbers in English can be learned not only easily, but also exciting. Today, many interesting ways and methods have been invented for this.

Learn numbers from 1 to 19

English numbers from 1 to 100 are easy to count and learn if you approach the learning process with ingenuity. To quickly learn a new language, you need to understand the process of generating an account. At the initial stage, it is worth learning only 12 numbers that will help you master the entire grammatical series. Every student and adult knows them. Therefore, any parent can teach their child with ease.

First you need to memorize the numbers from 1 to 12. A special table will help to do this.

NumberName in RussianName in English + how the word is spelled
1 OneoneOne
2 TwotwuThat
3 ThreethreeFree
4 FourFourFo
5 FivefiveFife
6 SixsixSyks
7 SevensevenSevn
8 EighteightEith
9 Nineninenein
10 TentenTeng
11 ElevenelevenElavn
12 TwelvetwelveTuelv

The presented English number series, as a rule, is taught in poetic form, so it is easy to remember.

Counting from 13 to 19, knowing the previous numbers by heart will be easy. To do this, you need to learn how to independently compose a number series using the learned numbers.

To get 13, you need to add the suffix teen (tin) to the number 3, it turns out three (free) + teen (tin) = thirteen (fetin). The same rule applies to the number five and four:

• four (fo) + teen (tin) = fourteen (fotin) - 14;
• five (fifty) + teen (tin) = fifteen (fiftin) - 15.

This row can be continued until 19: 16 - sixteen, 17 - seventeen, 18 - eighteen, 19 - nineteen. If a child understands the process of forming numbers from 1 to 20, English will become a favorite language for the baby, which is not at all difficult to learn on your own or with the help of parents.

Compiling dozens

Tens in English is just as interesting to learn as other numbers in the account. Because they are formed in the same way as the previous figures. Round numbers are obtained by adding the suffix ty (ti). For example, to understand how to pronounce and write 20, 30, 40, 50, you need:

• twu (tu) + ty (ti) = twenty (twenti) - 20;
• three (free) + ty (ty) = thirty (hundreds) - 30;
• four (fo) + ty (ti) = forty (foti) - 40;
• five (fife) + ty (ty) = fifty (fifty) - 50.
• Thus, a table of round tens is obtained.

NumberName in RussianApproximate pronunciation in RussianName in English
20 TwentyTventiTwenty
30 ThirtySotiThirty
40 FourtyFotiForty
50 FiftyFivetyFifty
60 SixtySixtysixty
70 Seventyseventyseventy
80 EightyAityEighty
90 NinetyKnightyNinety

It is worth remembering how the numbers 50, 40, 30, 20 are written and pronounced. These are the words of the exception. When they are formed, the root is modified.

Getting the rest of the numbers from one to one hundred is also not difficult. Any student can do this if he understands the technology of their education. You can give an example on the numbers 54 and 45:

• 54 consists of fifty and four, so in English it will sound like fifty (50) + four (4) = fifty-four (fifty-fo);
• 45 consists of forty (forty) and five (five), it turns out forty-five (foty five).

As shown above, the number is made up of tens and ones, which is closely related to the Russian language - 20 (twenty) + 5 (five) = 25 (twenty-five). In the native language, numbers are readable. This facilitates the learning process.

Any kid will be able to understand the pattern of creating numbers four, five, ten, twenty-four, etc. up to 100 if parents help and guide him. Already in elementary school, he will have extensive acquaintance with English and British pronunciation, their difference. In the first grades, children are already learning how to write and pronounce numbers up to 100. Therefore, it is extremely important to help the child master a foreign language perfectly before entering school.

What can be done with them? Yes, anything - draw, invent associations, paint, cut, sculpt, decipher (my children love to play translators of secret magical languages) and so on!

The main task of teachers is to motivate children, arouse interest in English, love it and love the learning process. What do children love? Children love to play and have fun. I propose to use these words and anchor the English language with positive emotions, so that for the child it would be like a mini-holiday, so that he would run to the lesson with pleasure!

How to memorize numbers in English?

Deciphering magic signs

We always play the top position deciphering from magical languages.

I "encrypt" English letters, the children translate. For example,

JI☼ - what is it?

Below they are given a "translator"
J-o
I-n
☼-e

And children make up words (only icons in the translator, of course, for each letter).

I will give a few more examples of how to teach numbers in English.

1) Thumb up! Down!

I use this technique both for memorizing the alphabet (if you are interested, here is the article: ""), and for memorizing the numbers of the English language. Thumb up - pronounce numbers in English in order, thumb down - in reverse order.

2) Forbidden number

We stand in a circle and throw the ball to each other, but each new circle we assign a forbidden number. When the turn of the forbidden number comes, instead of saying it, you need to perform some action that you discuss together during the game (clap your hands, stomp, crouch, jump, etc.). Great for memory development and fun for kids!

3) 2 balls

This time there are two balls. For example, green - count in order, yellow - in reverse order. We don’t throw in turn, but the balls work in a circle at the same time ... Even my brain breaks 🙂

4) match

For speed in two teams, you need to match the numbers with the words denoting them.

5) Cut and put together

We write on the cards in large letters the studied numbers in English, cut them into pieces of different sizes and shapes, and the children must collect these pieces for a while.

6) Bingo!

We also already wrote about this game in the article "". The meaning is the same, but we only use numbers in English instead of letters.

7) What's missing?

We lay out the cards with numbers, first in order, then in a scatter. The children close their eyes and the teacher hides one of the cards. Opening their eyes, the children say what is missing.

And it’s not enough just to guess, you also have to find it, the children are looking for the class, and the teacher says where it’s warm and where it’s cold.

8) Songs, chants

The songs are usually very simple, but the children like them and "eat" into the memory. When the lesson ends, everyone continues to sing songs. And so am I. 🙂

9) Maths

Many children do not like mathematics at school, but for some reason they love English mathematics!))

10) Energizing numbers

Children get tired of sitting for a long time, nothing energizes them like movement!

We come up with (all together) funny moves for each number (for example, “one” - jump on one leg and shout “Hurray”!). Then the teacher randomly calls out the numbers (or, alternatively, you can make a colorful round pinwheel out of paper, pierce the center with a pencil and put a paper clip on the pencil to indicate the number), and the children imitate the movement. I am amazed every time how good their memory is (when they are not asked to "remember" but just play... well, at least they think so)!

Crossword

To consolidate the studied numbers in English, we offer you a crossword puzzle which you can solve together with your child. You need to solve a mathematical problem, and write the answer in English in the appropriate field.

You can also download an empty and completed crossword:

Good luck to you! We look forward to your advice, additions and methods.

The topic of English numbers is quite complicated, since the formation of English numerals is different from the formation of Russian ones. There are rules, but there are exceptions, while both have their own peculiarities. Let's consider English numbers with transcription and Russian pronunciation, point out vivid examples and focus on the exception. Forward for new knowledge!

Numbers in English are formed in different ways. Numerals from 1 to 10 have one formation rules, from 13 to 20 - others. Dozens, hundreds and thousands also have features of education.

Features of the formation of numerals from 1 to 12

The table below shows numbers from 1 to 12 with transcription, Russian pronunciation and examples:

1 one one
2 two [ˈtuː] that
3 three [θriː] sri
4 four for
5 five five
6 six syks
7 seven [ˈsevn̩] s'even
8 eight ate
9 nine nein
10 ten ten
11 eleven [ɪˈlevn̩] il'even
12 twelve tu'elv
• We wanted one cake, two bananas ang eight apples => We wanted one cake, two bananas and eight apples.
• We need to buy avocado fot this recipe. Or better two ones => For this recipe we need to buy an avocado. Or better two.
• Three kilos of meat, four big tomatoes, five eggplants and garlic will made this evening much more better. I will prepare a very delicious dish by my own recipe! => Three kilos of meat, four large tomatoes, five eggplants and garlic will make the evening much better. I will cook a very tasty dish according to my own recipe!
• Eleven foxes and twelve wolves were seen on this week at this place => Eleven foxes and twelve wolves were seen this week at this place.

Features of the formation of numerals from 13 to 20

13 thirteen [θɜː'tiːn] sert'in
14 fourteen [ˌfɔː'tiːn] fort'in
15 fifteen [ˌfɪf'tiːn] fift'in
16 sixteen [ˌsɪk'stiːn] sykstin
17 seventeen [ˌsev(ə)n'tiːn] sevant'in
18 eighteen [ˌeɪ'tiːn] eyth'in
19 nineteen [ˌnaɪn'tiːn] night'in

The table shows that numbers from 13 to 19 (inclusive) are written according to the same rules, a particle is added to the cardinal number (one, two, three) –teen. And do not confuse cardinal numbers with ordinal numbers! in English they are formed in a completely different way!

On a note! It must be remembered that there are exceptions to every rule. In this case, the exceptions will be the numerals 13 and 15. Their root three and five will have a modified form:

• Three => third
• Five => fifteen.

Not threeteen/fiveteen!!!

Some examples:

• Seventeen girls were seen at this party while only eight boys came. Seventeen girls were seen at the party, while only eight guys showed up.
• Seventeen pieces of cake were given to all those children. All these children were given seventeen pieces of cake.
• There is a lot of fish in this river. Nineteen kinds were known 5 years ago. — There are a lot of fish in this river. Five years ago, nineteen species were known.

Dozens of English numbers

20 twenty [ˈtwenti] tu'enty
30 thirty [ˈθɜːti] S'yorti
40 forty [ˈfɔːti] f'orti
50 fifty [ˈfɪfti] f'ifty
60 sixty [ˈsɪksti] s'yksti
70 seventy [ˈsevnti] s'eventi
80 eighty [ˈeɪti] ‘aty
90 ninety [ˈnaɪnti] n'inti

The table clearly shows that dozens of digits are formed using a particle (suffix) –ty. These numerals are derivatives of cardinal numbers, you just need to add the -ty suffix.

Important! Remember that when the numbers 20,30, 40 and 50 are formed, the root of the quantitative digits, which serve as the basis for the formation of tens, will change:

• two-20 twenty [ˈtwenti]
• three - 30 thirty [ˈθɜːti]
• four - 40 forty [ˈfɔːti]
• five - 50 fifty [ˈfɪfti]

And one more nuance: the number 80 [ˈeɪti] is characterized by the absence of a repetition of the letter t: eight (eight) = eighty(eight+ty=eightty).

Examples:

• Thirty exotic animals were needed to make the idea of the movie complete => Thirty exotic animals were needed to make the idea of the movie complete.
• Sixty soldiers will come on parade in front of the palace => Sixty soldiers will come to the parade in front of the palace.
• Fifty of them knew the road but only thirty agreed to follow us => Fifty of them knew the road, but only thirty agreed to follow us.

As for the stress of numerals, which are formed with the help of -ty, then everything is simple - stress always will be on the first syllable.

Reference: it happens that it is difficult for novice students to separate numerals with -ty and -teen in colloquial speech. And here the stress will come to the rescue - if it is on the first syllable, then 100% we are dealing with dozens of numerals.

The foundation of the basics: how numbers are formed in English

When studying the formation of English numbers, it is important to remember that the numbers from 1 to 12 are simple cardinal numbers. Their task is to indicate the number of objects. Such numerals consist of one word. It is very important to remember the spelling of the first twelve digits, since they are marching for the formation of all other numbers - from thirteen to a billion.

How to pronounce the numerals that are formed by adding the -teen particle? Here you need to be very careful => the pronunciation of numerals (English digits) will have two stresses: on the first and second syllables. At the same time, we immediately note that the stresses will not be equal in strength. One of them will be secondary, and the other - the main one.

For example, how do you pronounce the word thirteen? The transcription [ˌθɜːˈtiːn] shows that the word has two stresses. The lower line indicates the secondary stress, the upper one - the main one. The same goes for fourteen [ˌfɔːˈtiːn] and fifteen [ˌfɪfˈtiːn]. There are also two accents - the main and additional.

What to do in order not to make a mistake with pronunciation? To do this, you must always look at the transcription. Each numeral, like any other word, should be studied according to the following scheme: transcription - translation - the presence of several meanings.

Note! In some dictionaries, the stress of numerals is determined by the presence (absence) of a noun after it. For example, if the numeral is next to the noun, then the stress falls on the first syllable =>

• fifteen rivers [ˈfɪftiːn ˈrɪvər z]
• sixteen cats [ˈsɪkstiːn ˈkæts]

But! If the numeral stands separately in the sentence, without a noun, then the stress falls on the second syllable (on the suffix -teen):

• fifteen
• sixteen

Examples:

• Fifteen cats were sold this week (emphasis on the first syllable) => Fifteen cats were sold this week
• How many cats were sold this week? – Fifteen (emphasis on the suffix –teen) => How many cats were sold this week? - Fifteen.
