However, receiving and passing the ball are closely related and do not differ fundamentally from each other, such as, for example, an attacking strike and blocking. In fact, receiving and passing is a single action, the essence of which is to change the direction of the ball's flight to one that will provide the maximum probability of winning a point.


The main task when receiving the ball is not to let the ball touch the court. In turn, the main task during the transfer is to accurately direct it to the attacking player to complete the attack. Based on this, receiving the ball is a defensive action, and passing is an attacking action.

There are situations in the game when the ball, after being received, is immediately sent for an attacking hit. However, in real games this is quite rare.

Mastering the skills of playing volleyball in general largely depends on the successful mastering of receiving and passing the ball. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on these techniques at the beginning of training and improve the skills of defensive actions and second transfer.

Top pass of the ball. The teaching of volleyball in general largely depends on the successful mastering of the top gear. The study of top gear begins with the first lessons and improves in all subsequent ones, with the exception of classes in general physical training.
The top pass of the ball with two hands is the main technique of volleyball. Only this transfer provides the most accurate transfer of the ball. Without mastering the technique of the top transfer, it is impossible to achieve any significant success in the game. The basis of the correct execution of the transfer is the timely access to the ball and the choice of the starting position:

    Legs bent at the knees and apart, one leg in front.

Reception of the ball from below with two hands. In terms of learning time, receiving the ball from below is inferior to learning the top gear, however, this is an equally important element in the preparation of volleyball players. Reception from below is used in cases when it is no longer possible to receive the ball from above, for example, at the net itself or when there is one touch left, and the player moves towards the ball with his back to the net.



The figure shows how to properly receive the ball from below. The player runs to the ball priming place. One leg (position a) is put forward in order to stop the movement of the body by inertia, the hands are already ready to receive the ball. The weight of the body passes to the front standing leg, the arms are straightened, the hands are closed (positions b, c).


Such a technique is characterized by “squatting under the ball” (positions d, e). Reception is made by moving the hands forward and upward, towards the ball.

At the moment of reception, the arms are straightened at the elbow joints, the hands are slightly lowered down, the point of contact of the ball falls on the forearms at the wrist joints. When receiving the ball on the hands (fists), it is difficult to achieve the accuracy of the ball's flight. At the moment of contact, the arms should not bend at the elbows.

Reception of the ball from above with two hands, followed by a fall and roll to the side on the thigh and back.


When a player is unable to perform a low stance overhead reception, he performs it followed by a fall. The figure above shows the basic technique of receiving the ball from above with a fall. After moving to the receiving point, a lunge is made towards the ball. The weight of the body is transferred to the leg that was lunged. The fall occurs in the direction of the lunge, with a sharp summing up of the shoulders under the ball, the fall can occur on the buttocks with a roll over the back.

This method is used to get a distant ball when it is impossible to perform the reception with the previous methods. This technique is similar in structure to the previous one, so mastering it is quite simple.

Since the ball is passed from below less often, if it was not possible to receive it from above, then act with lightning speed. Put the supporting leg forward to fix the movement, and lower the other knee down. The game of volleyball begins to be studied at school, in the fifth grade. The technique of playing volleyball is different in that touching the ball with your hands should be short and jerky, you can’t hold the ball. The principle of the top transfer of the ball consists in the actions:

  • Starting position - standing straight, on bent legs, with arms extended forward and up, bent at the elbows.
  • While receiving the ball, the hands turn palms up, fingers towards each other.
  • The serve is taken with slightly tense fingers of the hands, tightly covering the ball. The ball is received at face level.
  • To push the ball in the right direction, the knee, elbow and wrist joints are straightened.

Reception of the ball from below with two hands

Reception of the ball from below is carried out when it flies so low that it cannot be received by the top gear.

The technique of lowering the ball with two hands is performed as follows:

  • The volleyball player moves to the place where the ball is received, crouching on one knee and putting the other leg forward for braking. The weight of the body is transferred forward to the standing leg. Hands are directed parallel to the floor and closed with brushes, thumbs are tightly pressed to each other.
  • The ball is received by the movement of closed brushes forward and upward, crouching under the ball. The ball is received by the base of the thumbs, closer to the carpal joint. The elbows should be straightened.

It is difficult to achieve such accuracy of transfer as with the top transfer of the ball, but the range of its flight is higher.

Reception of the ball with one hand from below, followed by a fall

The method is used in order to take a distant ball, if it is no longer possible to get it in any other way.

Reception technique:

  • The player lunges in the direction from which the ball flies. In this case, the leg, which is located from the side of the ball, is put forward.
  • The hand is pulled back and prepares to receive the ball with a brush with bent fingers.
  • After the blow, a fall into a lunge is made. The shoulders are tucked in, and a roll over the shoulder is carried out.

It is used most often when the player does not have time to receive the ball with both hands from above. Reception technique:

  • The starting position is similar to the previous method: the player moves closer to the ball and lunges with one foot in the direction of the ball.
  • Hands are preparing to receive the ball, according to the technique of receiving with two hands.
  • After receiving the ball, the balance inevitably shifts back, so a fall is made back on the buttocks with a roll onto the back.
