Maar photographed Picasso a lot (especially during his work on " Guernica”), under his influence turned to painting. Picasso often created images of the sad Maar, in his work she forever remained a “weeping woman”.

Known to the world only as the woman of Picasso and the photographer who captured the process of making Guernica on film, Dora Maar actually deserves attention as a talented surrealist photographer, experimenter and photojournalist. At the beginning creative way for some time she was engaged in painting, but, realizing that her vocation was photography, she completely immersed herself in this new direction for that era. Surrealism reflected her own character and inner world: melancholic, intellectual and emotionally complex. In her works, Dora is looking for ways from liberation from conventions through free figurative associations and hidden forms and properties of objects to the birth of a new reality.

Two geniuses: Dora Maar and Pablo Picasso

Dora's beauty inspired the artist, he painted many portraits of her, but she does not smile in any of them. Picasso, succumbing to the charm of her huge sad eyes, portrayed his beloved sad, crying or mourning. In the portraits of Dora, we can see other features of this woman beloved by the artist: rounded cheekbones, the correct oval of the face, predatory long nails.

During the period of his relationship with Dora Maar, Picasso experienced another great shock when he learned about the bombing of Guernica, a town in his native Spain. His indignation poured out onto the canvas: in 1937, the famous Guernica denouncing Nazism appeared. Dora, being an experienced and talented photographer, captured the various stages of work on this picture, thus giving us invaluable historical material. She also owns many photographic portraits of Picasso. And it was thanks to her influence that the artist began his experiments in combining painting and engraving with photography.

Today, art connoisseurs are ready to shell out millions for exclusive paintings by Picasso or Pollock. Lucian Freud's painting The Sleeping Social Worker caused a public outcry when it was exhibited to the public. The canvas depicts a woman, but not with a beautiful toned body, but weighing 127 kilograms. Thus, the artist wanted to emphasize that everyone has their own concept of beauty.

Pablo Picasso Dora Maar with a cat"

Dona Maar was Pablo Picasso's mistress, faithful companion and friend. This was a beautiful, mysterious woman. The reason that she is depicted extremely terribly in all the paintings of Picasso Don was the period in which the relationship between this woman and the great artist unfolded. World War affected all spheres of human life. This did not bypass the work of the Spanish master of the brush. The union of Dona Maar and Pablo Picasso cannot be called romantic, sentimental. It would be more correct to say that their relationship was an organization of two minds, intellectuals, artists.

It's no secret that when two people with a strong character come together, their relationship is more of a struggle between two extraordinary personalities. Perhaps, precisely because of this fact, Picasso painted the beautiful Dora very distortedly, giving her sharp corners and dark shades.

Hats and long sharp nails became characteristic objects for Maar on Picasso's canvases. The hat emphasized the woman's involvement in the surrealist movement. In life, these details of appearance were quite important for a woman, which is probably why Picasso emphasized them in his works.

In the portrait “Dora Maar with a cat”, the sharpness of the nails is emphasized by the presence of a small black cat. The nails depicted in the picture are a symbol of the nails of unbridled felines. The blue nails drawn by Maar are a symbol of the possession of power, violence. Pablo Picasso has repeatedly stated that he compared the character of Dora Maar with the temperament of an Afghan cat. The artist resorted to cubic methods of drawing. Thus, he reworked the beautiful, delicate, oval face of his beloved Dora into an unrecognizable and deformed caricature. The woman's ear in the image is located under the eye, the mouth twisted into a smile. And the face itself is presented simultaneously from two sides: frontal and profile.

Behind the woman is a cat. Her position is also rather vague. On the one hand, the animal is quite cute and funny, but the color of the cat emphasizes the frightening notes of the work. Pablo Picasso imagined the combination of a woman and a cat as a combination of endless sexual aggression and cunning, characteristic of the fair sex. It is certain that the black cat is a symbol of the hot, fiery personality of Dora Maar and the very relationship between the two artists. Thus, the interweaving of the most diverse emotions of Picasso resulted in the canvas “Dora Maar with a cat”, which is the proud property of the casket of world art today.
