VAZ 2114 timing belt service life. Periodicity and requirements for replacement. In what cases it is necessary to change the belt.

The timing belt in any car acts as a link, synchronizing the operation of the camshaft and crankshaft, which is no exception for the VAZ 2114. engines. However, not many motorists know what this part is and where to look for it.

The location of the timing belt on the VAZ 2114

Finding this important detail is quite easy, because when you open the hood of the car, it immediately catches your eye. This belt differs from others with a toothed inner surface, and also passes not only through the camshaft and crankshaft, but also connects several auxiliary parts, due to which it is subject to increased wear, so it must be replaced in a timely manner.

Sooner or later, the timing belt may start to “eat up”, slip or start to break. It often happens that this link connecting the two shafts breaks directly during movement. In such cases, the car stalls and does not start, and in the injection versions of 2114, the “phase sensor errors” light on the dashboard lights up.

Consequences of a broken timing belt

For vehicles equipped with a 1.5 liter engine with 8 valves, a broken timing belt will not lead to any catastrophic consequences. However, models with a 1.3 liter installed. engine, a rupture can cause damage to the valves, which will lead to failure of the entire engine.

Experienced motorists and employees of various car services strongly note that the timing belt should be replaced no later than after 30-45 thousand kilometers.

However, as practice shows, the condition of this part in the VAZ must be monitored especially carefully, and also replaced before it has time to become unusable.

Instructions for replacing the timing belt on a VAZ 2114 8 valves

So, you personally encountered this problem, and the part came into an obscene state or was completely torn. In order for the replacement to be successful, it is not at all necessary to contact a car service, because, although this is a time-consuming task, it is quite feasible on your own. Replacing the timing belt in a VAZ model 2114 should be done following the instructions below.

How to remove the timing belt

How to put on a new timing belt

  1. The new belt must be put on the camshaft pulley, and then both of its branches must be pulled;
  2. Put the untensioned part (left) of the RGRM behind the roller and put it on the pump and crankshaft pulleys, after which you need to turn the roller counterclockwise until the belt is fully tensioned;
  3. Turn the crankshaft 1.5-2 turns, then check that the marks are in the middle. If the marks do not match, the belt must be removed, and the whole procedure repeated until they are parallel to each other at an average value;
  4. Unscrew the crankshaft bolt and put the alternator pulley in place, then tighten it with a bolt. By turning the roller counterclockwise, tighten the belt and put on the belt of the generator drive;
  5. Next, you should start the engine and make sure that the work done is correct. In addition, the sound will tell you if the belt needs to be loosened or tightened.

The most interesting

The timing belt on the VAZ 2114 can eat up sooner or later. It will begin to slide or even tear. If it breaks while driving, the car will stall and will not start again. If the VAZ 2114 is with an injection motor, then if the timing belt breaks, a “phase sensor error” will appear on the panel.

In general, it is better to carefully monitor its condition and have time to change it before it breaks.

What will be the consequences for the VAZ 2114 if the timing belt breaks?

If a 1.5 liter engine with 8 valves is installed on the car, then a break, in principle, will not lead to anything terrible.

But if the engine is 1.3 liter, then the valves can bend. And this will lead to a major overhaul of the motor.

1. If it's time to change it, then it's better to change the tension roller along with it.

2. Before putting on a new one, you need to check if there is grease in the roller, play or free rotation in the pump.

If there is no lubrication, then lubricate the roller on both sides.

If you find play or free rotation on the pump, then it must be changed. Because when you put in a new belt, a different load will be applied to its gear. Because of this, it can jam.

3. If, after the VAZ 2114 timing belt has been replaced, there is a whistle during engine operation (you are sure that everything is in order with the pump and roller), then loosen its tension.

Detailed replacement instructions

1. Put the machine on the parking brake.

2. Engage 4th or 5th gear.

3. Remove the front toothed belt cover.

4. Loosen the alternator drive belt, then remove it.

5. The alternator drive pulley on the crankshaft must also be removed. Just put the bolt that holds it in place.

6. Place the box lever in the neutral position.

7. Turn the crankshaft clockwise, looking into the hatch of the clutch housing. There you will see a flywheel and a mark on it. When this mark reaches the middle division of the scale, stop turning the crankshaft.

8. Make sure that the mark on the camshaft pulley is opposite the alignment mark located on the rear protective cover.

9. Slightly unscrew the nut securing the tension roller.

10. Using a roller, loosen the timing belt so that it can be easily removed. Then remove it.

11. Put a new one on the camshaft pulley and pull both of its branches.

12. Get the left side behind the tension roller and put it on the pump pulley. After on the crankshaft pulley. Now give tension with the roller by turning it counterclockwise. Make sure that there are no sharp bends on the belt.

13. Turn the crankshaft two turns and check that the marks are in the same position as described in paragraphs 7 and 8.

If the labels do not match, then do it all over again, starting from the first paragraph.

14. Turn off a bolt from a cranked shaft and put a generator pulley into place. Then secure it with a bolt. Bolt tightening should be 102.9 Nm or 10.5 kgcm

15. Using a roller, tension the timing belt on the VAZ 2114 as it seems to you to be normal, and put on the generator drive belt. Its tension also needs to be adjusted.

Then you can start the engine and check your work. So you can understand what you need: loosen or tighten the RGRM. After a few checks, you will achieve the ideal tension.

My timing belt broke on a VAZ 2114 1.5 liter. 8 valves, I replaced it, put everything on the labels. The car started up with a half kick, but for some reason liquid flows from the muffler, before that it was not like that. What could it be?

If the coolant does not leave, then this is the normal operation of the injector. Fuel combustion is oxidation. There will always be moisture on a cold engine.

Why doesn’t the valve bend on 1.5 8 valve engines after a broken belt, but on 1.3 or 16 valve engines it bends?

I think to change the belt, roller, pump and antifreeze at the same time! Mileage 28 thousand I am the second owner. I think the first one wound up, an infection, so I don’t believe him!

To check whether the mileage is rolled up or not, you must press the button on the instrument panel under the number 200 on the speedometer and turn on the ignition. The arrows must swing three times from beginning to end and all eights will be on the run, if the run is not wound up. And if it is wound, then different numbers.

Ivan, you just set the ignition incorrectly. There are marks on which you need to set or look at the dead center of the piston 1

Signs that the timing belt needs to be replaced. Consequences untimely replacement. Tips for replacing the belt and detailed, step-by-step instructions - you can find out by reading this article. And about changing the timing belt yourself or contacting the workshop, it's up to you.

On a VAZ 2114 car, like on any other, sooner and later the timing belt can start to eat up.

As a result, it will slowly begin to slide and, as a result, will finally burst.

If it breaks while driving, the car will most likely pull hard enough, as if you switched from 4-5 gears to 1 and performed engine braking, and it will not start again.

If the car is equipped with an on-board computer, the “phase sensor error” icon will appear on it.

So that this situation does not arise suddenly, the condition of the belt must be constantly monitored.

The timing belt is changed according to the operating manual every 50 thousand km, and on the advice of professionals, after 40.

On a 1.5-liter, 8-valve engine, nothing is critical when it breaks, but when the car is equipped with a 1.3-liter power unit, it can bend the valves.

This would be very sad, because what happened will entail the implementation of very expensive work, if not a major overhaul of the engine.

If it is necessary or the time has come to replace the timing belt, it will also be useful to replace the belt tensioner.

Before installing a new belt, check the condition of the tension roller or it is better to replace it, also check for free rotation or play in the water pump (pump).

If there is a whistle after installing a new belt, check its tension again, if everything is in order with it, the pump needs to be replaced. Indeed, after installing a new belt, the load on the gear changes, which means that the pump can jam.

Important, follow good advice, when changing the timing belt, change the tension roller and the water pump (pump).

Step-by-step instructions for replacing the timing belt

  1. We put the car in a position convenient for you, fixing it with a parking brake.
  1. We turn on the fourth gear.
  1. Using a 10 key, unscrew the three bolts securing the timing belt cover. One is located at the end, 2 others are on the left side of the cover, at the top and bottom.
  1. We loosen the tension of the alternator belt and then dismantle it along with its pulley.
  1. We put the car in "neutral" and begin to scroll the crankshaft clockwise while looking into the hatch of the clutch housing, watching the flywheel located there. When the mark on it reaches the division of the scale located in the middle, we stop the action.
  1. We check the correctness of the marking on the camshaft and the rear cover.
  1. Using the tension roller, you need to loosen the timing belt and then remove it. We immediately put on a new one.
  1. We start part of the new belt by the tension roller and put it on the pump pulley. Next to the crankshaft pulley. Now we stretch with the same roller.
  1. We turn the crankshaft again for two full turns and again compare the correctness of setting all the risks. If they do not match, we start all over again.
  1. We “introduce” the generator pulley to the homeland and fix it.
  1. Tighten the tension roller again and check the timing belt tension level. Next, we put the alternator belt in place and pull it with the necessary force.
  1. We start the car and make the necessary adjustments (if any).

The timing belt must have a strictly defined tension.

With insufficient tension, it can hit the casing or jump over the teeth, which can lead to a violation of the valve timing.

What threatens the incorrect tension of the timing belt to the engine on the VAZ-2114?

Pay attention to the gap from the belt to the engine, it is uneven

With a significant displacement of the belt, a picture similar to its complete breakage can be observed. Therefore, it is necessary to pay serious attention to the correct tension of the timing belt, both during the operation of the car. You can do it yourself, but be careful and be sure to follow the instructions below.

Correct tension (order and process)

Before you begin to tension the timing belt, you must turn off the engine after idling in neutral gear. In this case, the engine crankshaft will stop in the position where all the forces acting on it will be balanced. Now let's start stretching.

conclusions

Incorrect tension of the timing belt will lead to its accelerated wear.

Accelerated timing belt wear due to incorrect tightening.

The engine on the VAZ-2114 does not bend the valve when the timing belt breaks, but still, there is a risk of getting up at night in a dark field in our large country. You will be lucky if the belt breaks at home or at work, and not on a long trip. To prevent this from happening, you need a timing belt, as we wrote above!

To perform these works, you will need a wrench to tension the timing belt.

a) It is necessary to remove the plug at the top of the clutch housing.

b) In this window, with a screwdriver, turn the crankshaft by the teeth of the flywheel ring

until the mark on the camshaft pulley and the protrusion of the rear cover of the timing belt are aligned.

In this case, the mark on the flywheel should be aligned with the center of the scale.

If the mutual position of the crankshaft and camshaft is violated, then turn the crankshaft until the mark is aligned with the center of the scale. Loosen the belt tension and remove it from the camshaft pulley. Turn the camshaft until the mark on its pulley matches the protrusion on the rear cover. Without changing the relative position of the shafts, put the belt on the camshaft pulley and adjust the belt tension.

7. Using a 17 mm wrench, release the tightening of the tension roller mounting nut.

8. Turning the roller with a special key, we adjust the belt tension and, holding the roller in this position, tighten the nut of its fastening.

9. Check the belt tension (see above) and, if necessary, repeat the adjustment.

10. Finally tighten the roller fastening nut to a torque of 33.2–41.2

11. Reinstall the front cover of the belt and tighten the bolts of its fastening.
